Very nice use of rubato and phrasing that comes from himself. I think Beethoven probably did play it expressive but didn't micromanage the score to keep it clean. I am all about this interpretation. A tiny side note is his incredibly dramatic body language. I love Martha Argerich's relaxed way of playing but if Jan needs it to phrase so well I am happy to keep it as it is. Technically very impressive on top of it all.
I really don't know the reason why this pianist has still the opportunity to record for DG. Also in this Concerto, he completely ignores the real spirit of the composer., from the first note (that is upbeat, not in beating as he plays giving an absurd accent!!!) to the last one. Apart from his mediocre technique, he plays Beethoven like he was Chopin, exaggerating with Rubato and Diminuendo, and then losing all the more typically Beethovenian rhythmic balancing. Disastrous interpretation, like when he played Chopin's Etudes at Verber Festival.
Alessandro Sandiano but look at Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt testament. He continued living for the sake of his art. He composed what he felt, which is why he is so prolific. If anything, Jan plays truer to the composer since he clearly plays with emotion leading the phrasing, as opposed to mindlessly playing just what’s on the page.
Don't get me wrong. This young man seems to be a very nice person. But, his playing is boring. In order to present music that was a product of many inner conflicts, you have to be at some kind of a struggle or purely gifted from God. I don't think he (his interpretation) possesses any of those.
Isn’t he such a handsome young man!!! My gosh. And I really enjoyed his playing. Some phrasing I was like - oh I haven’t heard it played like that before.
Marios, how can they do it without an insulator? Sorry, physics joke. It was a remarkable performance. I suspect this was rehearsed an enormous amount and the conductor was not far away.
It is good to see many people over sixty employed in this orchestra and not being put out to pasture. As much as I revel in the energy and talent of the young I revere the knowhow, talent and wisdom of older people - like me. And bravo, Jan. Your playing is wonderful to behold.
Lisiecki‘s an outstanding artist. To me his interpretations are ranking among, if not on top of best one could find. Just wonderful and in spite of his world wide fame he has remained devoted to his art not his mediatic acclaim.
Refreshing, refined, focused and mature ... This is Jan's performance. Besides the harmony with the orchestra is just so tuned in. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Some pianists don’t realize how coming in at the top of a scale is difficult with a conductor let alone without .Theydid an outstanding job to this goal terrific ensemble many thanks to all & merry holidays to all involved
I can't believe I find him. I heard Jan play piano on radio nearly 10 years ago. I love his sound. But didn't remember his full name. Just found this video. I knew he was canadian and very young. So exited to hear him play.
World is now a better place since we have Jan. His interpretation is very modern and yet masculin, although he is toung. Perfect and brilliant technically.
Unbelievable, so it can be done without a conductor! Although it feels little uneasy knowing that someone is missing. But the concertmaster does a good job with body language.
What it is with these fascinating, emotional Canadians? Thinking of Glenn Gould humming. :) But seriously, his playing is very clean, powerful, you can hear all the lines. Beautiful.
I remember watching him play Mendelssohn's Rondo Capriccioso years ago. He has come a long way and it's amazing to see him now ! So matured also Wishing you the best and more success!!
I love the sincere expression that this orchestra plays with. They truly love the music and it’s captivating to listen to. Just listen to the woodwinds after 2:35
Fantastic and wonderful performance 🙏❤🎶🎹🎶❤👌🤗💘 Brilliant Orchestra too. 💘 Everything is magical. Congratulations and thank you so much everyone and Deutsche Grammophon. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐😊🌹❤🙋♀️😍
He slows down every solo opportunity that there is for unaccompanied piano to create a more profound emotional experience. I'm not sure it works for me. It's so romantic.
Doesn’t really work for me at all as well since these “gestures” interrupted the flow of the musical line. Sturm und drang is not really a license to play “romantically, i.e. too many minute tempo changes.
This boy is phenomenal - I don't get the thumbs down part (they are obviously insane). His interpretation far exceeds other pianists of 'chronological maturity'.
If long ago it was enough to play the notes once played perfectly, such performances would be unnecessary. Just turn on a super-quality recording and play it to anyone interested. Unfortunately, the music is alive !!! He lives through the individual performance of each subsequent artist unique in his kind by passing on the emotions that every note provides to him. Just as some basic emotions are universal for the general humanity, the more subtle ones are shaped by the sensitivity of each person and his experience. For me, this kind of music makes my heart beat faster and my eyes become shiny :)
For all of you who complain about this performance: I would like to hear you people in a crowded recital hall playing like him. Actually, I don`t want to hear you, I just better listen to Jan Lisiecki´s playing and the beauty he makes out of Beethoven`s music.
+JMJ There should be WAY more views than 154,000. This was an excellent performance. All of the Allegro con brio's technicalities were well-executed without losing its passion.
The closing measures of the first movement are haunting! It's Beethoven at his most Beethoven. Notice the hint of the Fifth Symphony that was yet to come.
Stupende Technik, aber vor allem große Musikalität, eine angeborene Musikalität, er macht musikalisch einfach alles richtig, sehr differenzierte und durchdachte Spielweise - sicher einer der ganz großen jungen Pianisten!
This is very good, I was lucky enough to hear Andres Schiff in this very same concerto. I think there is something to be had in the idea of having played it for a longer period of time. I felt the same of Yuja Wangs performance of Brahms 1st as compared to Rudolph Serkins. Pianists can grow into a piece after a long gestation.
Agreed. At those points where piano and orchestra pass the torch throughout a piano concerto are best when the transition is seamless. That comes from numerous performances and a certain consciousness beyond the piano.
Such a great piece. I learned it in college. It was a big step forward for LVB, but still maintained the basic classical form. 4 and 5 started down the path to romanticism.
I have subscribed already your channel, mostly because of this incredible New Phenomenon called JAN LISIECKI. Never thoughtcti live to find the Newest Modern Chopin of this Century. Thank you.
Outstanding! I heard him in Vienna a few years ago with chopin. I didn‘t like it at all! But this performance is incredible!!! Very unique, personal. Simply fantastic! I should discover him in classic Repertoire!!

Mmm hmmm. Yep.
Same here … I‘ve enjoyed both ;-)
His hair deserves its own separate encore. And an entourage. 😁

The best Beethoven piano concerto performed by the best young pianist of the moment.
Excelent!!!

How the hell can they do this without a conductor?! Absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!

They're trying to prove that conductors are really unnecessary.

I would pay good money to see this young man play. He's amazing. Extremely handsome too.
Almost two years ago I saw him play, becouse my mother somehow got some tickets and it was totally amazing.
I've seen perform him four times and briefly met him after all shows. A very engaging young man and a magnificent performer!
Never a shortcoming, never an exaggeration, always just perfect. Bravo!

Incredible, he is feeling the notes in his mind, 17 minutes well trained
Jan’s biography is fascinating. Already bi-lingual & loving airplanes, Jan’s 4th grade teacher felt he wasn’t being challenged enough & suggested music. Worth googling!
Are we just not going to talk about the flutist's majestically epic moustache?
Or what food he has stuck in it... Ugh
How about that flautist!?
Yeah, that was so epic
the answer my friend is blowin in the wind
Wish he wouldn’t bury his face in his keyboard so much. He’ll get neck problems if he does that for years!
The ending always puts the hairs up on my neck, 17 minutes of pure genius. I could listen to this all day everyday

This IS Romantic and is played as such ! “Sturm und drang” Beethoven’s spirit is there!
A phrase explained to me in 9th grade in a very fine school & perfect to describe much of Beethoven.
Gelukkige ontdekking van deze brillante jonge pianist! Tracht naar meer kennismaking met deze pianist! Danjk, Jan, voor dit verkwikkelijk spel!
I wish I could live my life with such passion.
That’s what Beethoven asks of us. :)
Beautiful performance by Jan Lisiecki and the whole orchestra of this Beethoven piano concert.
