The life of Bach is itself a miracle.

Bach often had to set texts of poor quality. I would agree that Bach's faith, combined with his pride as a craftsman and his sheer genius, enabled him to do remarkable things with unpromising material. He wanted to share his faith in Christ, whether burdened by clumsy words or blessed with eloquent ones.
It's not that common for superb words to be set to superb music. Handel got lucky with "Ode for St. Cecilia's Day." Bach best words were perhaps from Luther's translation of the Bible.

wasn´ t God enough important in Bach´s life and works ? i watched the entire video and it seems to be not important for Koopman: `` those texts are not the best poetry at the time´´, it´s easy to get confused about the importance of the ``lyrics´´ if you think of them as poetry, for Bach was more than ``poetry´´, it was a commitment with Jesus Christ testimony, wich is a way of save, heal, and encourage people against the injustice,in the name of love, that´s no poetry: that´s news

@IpsaPaphum Yes, a lot of people complaint about that information Koopman gives there. I think there was a kind of research to get the information there was a man with gout behind the history, who stimulated Bach to chose that text in the Cantata. It is not necessary the text being explicit about a man with gout suffering.
Or... Koopman is saying something inaccurate. He is not infallible.

@strudlvon Maybe because he believes that even without his faith, Bach would be equally as great a composer. I, too, think that that may indeed be the case.

everytime i heaar Bach i go "oh is beatifull" just like Koopman said it. It is exactly why I study, music, I want to know why i makes me feel that way. The only answer I have until now, is "this is holy!"

3:07 Is this part of the piece actually in the cantata? I can't find it in other performances.

It's actually the opening chorus from Bach's cantata no. 147 "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben". No idea why they included that piece rather than something from BWV 56, but hey, BWV 147 is also very pleasant to hear.

"An audience that could hardly read"? Excuse me Mr. Koopman, but at the time the German peoples had the greatest educational system in Europe, an educational system people today should envy.
