This week a new report was released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), specifically looking at the impacts of climate change. It makes for grim reading. The report tells us that climate change is already impacting billions of people, and pushing wildlife to extinction. Further, these impacts are going to get worse the more carbon we put into the atmosphere. In this video I look at why the loss of species is particularly dangerous, risking sending us at breakneck speed into the sixth mass extinction in the history of our planet.

This video is about the new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change looking at the impacts of climate change. It says this isn’t a future problem. Climate change is already un-aliving people. Destroying nature. Making the world poorer. This video focuses on the most existential threat posed by climate change - the damage it is doing to the biosphere, causing a new mass extinction. Humans are causing the sixth mass extinction in the history of Earth, something made much worse by global warming.

My husband studied climate change's effect on mosquito habitats for his PhD and found that equatorial mosquitoes (the fun, disease carrying ones) are moving north at a rate of 5 miles per year. We are not far off from Europe and North America having uncontrolled outbreaks of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. It's only a matter of time.

I'm a 2nd PhD student in Palaeontology, and my research is focused on exploring the effect of the Toarcian (Early Jurassic) extreme environmental change on insects. I study fossil insects (183 million years old) from deposits mainly in Europe, in order to determine how the global warming of the Early Jurassic period affected these terrestrial invertebrates. Through exploring past periods of extreme environmental change, we can definitely enhance our understanding of how climate change is currently affecting modern-day insect communities.
Out of curiosity, how did insects react to the extreme environmental changes during the Early Jurassic period?

What makes this even more harrowing and disturbing is that, while I understand that it is important to do OUR part in stopping the disaster, my fear is that there's a limit to this. Not to say that we SHOULDN'T do our part in preventing this, but that if key players don't start doing the same, the rate of climate change prevention simply won't be able to keep up with the increase on severity.
It's easy to think that if you do your part, the problem will go away for you. But it won't. Like the keystone species of these ecosystems, the action of the keystone players of the economy (oil, gas, etc) is what will really make the difference. This being said, everyone must still do their part to truly make a global impact.
It's a systemic issue, so something needs to be done with the system
Well considering that for the 'keystone species of the economy', "doing their part" entails that they STOP. Taking this into consideration doing our part actually becomes pretty straightforward, it means we stop spending, stop consuming commodities, stop working so much and save our money. Without the (esp. american)consumer base all these evil industries will go into recession and we will have means to do much more than we can now. They want us to buy electric cars and other green washed value added consumer goods, we need to stop mass production, especially of automotives and electronics, and use less material and energy. Stopping working and going into debt to buy value-added trash, will actually be good for our society as we'll have a lot more time on our hands to fill our lives with meaningful, living things and care for each other including other species. we can start making our own things and develop tools for conviviality, suddenly climate policy will not be about bipartisan support for sustainable auto-dependent infrastructure and spending our tax dollars on greenwashed subsidies for mining and manufacturing, it will be about how we live our day-to-day lives, once life is free. #greenNOdeal

I agree with you however I do think that the collective effort of citizens should not be underestimated to such a degree. Realise that no company would bother selling plastic and mica and petrol and other harmful things if people stopped purchasing their items.

Dr. Clark, if you have the time, I'd love some advice as a soon-to-be college graduate. I'm an applied mathematics major-interested in data science and related fields of applied math. Data and computer science are things that I am genuinely passionate for. Yes, these fields are attractive financially, but it goes beyond that. Climate change terrifies me and I feel an active guilt from not gearing my career towards such a serious issue. Have you ever felt a kind of "career guilt" for not dedicating yourself to other existing issues? Thanks and keep up the phenomenal work!
Yes absolutely! I think my good would be maximised by retraining as an engineer and working on grid interconnectors (or maybe Engineers Without Borders) but I think if you spend your entire life in sole pursuit of this one goal of enacting change you will always be chasing more. No matter what you do, you'll always feel like you're not doing enough. At least for the time being, I'm trying to use my position and training to direct my energy into the most good I can do right now. In my case that means making videos about this topic and trying to signal boost other people's work. But in any role, anything you can do to direct energy and attention towards reducing emissions (ideally systematically) is still making a difference. Both directly, but also by being an example to others. So basically, no matter what you end up doing - make it about climate change, as much as you can!

And while it might be sad, frightening and horrifying what we are doing to ourselves. We are far from the entirety of what is going on. Life goes on man

It's time to eat the rich. The US only need each worker to work 15h per week in order to feed, clothe, house and heal everyone. Yes, that's how exploited americans are, many of them work more than 45h per week and don't even get all of the above.
So eat the rich and use the additional 30h of work that you spent enriching them on saving the planet.

The problem is that the US is a significant contributor, and since their government is bought by fossil fuel corporations (because, you know, bribing is legal over there), they won't be able to do anything significant unless there is a radical change in their politics.
Btw, i know china is also a big problem, but i don't speak chinese so there isn't much i can do on that front.

Hey, Simon. I've been a follower of your videos for some time now and I love learning from you. It's not something I get from my high school education. I've increasingly become more knowledgable and increasingly more frustrated. At this stage, I don't have much hope. Often times someone laughs and I immediately think to how terrible the world will be in a 2 degree warming situation. How do you keep faith in humanity during these times? I certainly cannot. Well what makes me happy is that after most of us humans die, the greenhouse effect will lower (hopefully quick, 1000 years maybe? Honestly don’t know) in which new species can come and we humans will hopefully learn not to reproduce so much and live better with nature.

The war in Ukraine could speed up the transition from fossil fuels to green energy - at least in EU. However, it seems that at least in my country we are taking a step back by considering repealing the peat burning phase down plan. There's also the interesting detail that Russia and Ukraine together are responsible for almost quarter of the world's wheat exports. This probably pushes others to increase their production, unless the conflict is resolved quickly, and will certainly have effects beyond Europe as many African countries rely on both countries from food security and economical perspective. This of course can have impact on environment.
I'm from Italy. The current energy crisis has pushed our government to vote in favour of the reopening of SIX coal power plants, and I can't even blame them for that given the future we face if tensions with Russia continue to rise. I'm afraid Europe has not enough political will to trigger the sweeping change we need. The war in Ukraine was the nail that sealed our coffin.

@@oskarhenriksen it's an emergency measure due to the current tensions with Russia (our biggest gas exporter). There have been talks of a "focus on renewable energies" but currently it's just political gibberish.

I'm a third year undergrad student of political science and sociology. The fact that governments (or at least certain parties and actors) are so deep in denial when it comes to the effects climate change has on the world ecosystem and therefore us is incredibly frustrating. Especially since we already have a lot of technology, tools and systems to fight climate change figuered out.
It's the governments failure to act that put us in this situation.
I understand that many STEM students and scientists feel a hopelessness from time to time- the social sciences are right there with you.
Drastic change could cost them votes, you know. Or money. Or both.

Great video, Simon. You’re the best climate change communicator on TH-cam, and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I understand that scientifically, it’s still possible to avoid the very worst effects of climate change. Politically though, we are miles away from where we need to be. Capitalism is what got us into this mess, and our lawmakers in the US and elsewhere exist to protect it. Not only are we still powering our civilization on fossil fuels, we’re burning more every year than the year before. How in the world can we possibly make meaningful changes now?

It's not capitalism though, is it? If society overthrew capitalism tomorrow, but carried on burning the same quantity of fossil fuels, Planet Earth wouldn't give a toss. Petroleum doesn't suddenly combust into bread and honey rather than carbon dioxide just because it's been brought into public ownership.
And in addition to not actually solving climate change, overthrowing capitalism is also a harder problem to solve than climate change. People have been trying to overthrow capitalism unsuccessfully for 150 years, and humanity has made less progress on that problem than has been made on climate change in barely 40 years. Agitating for capitalism to crumble is as much a waste of the limited time we have left as waiting for Jesus to return to save us all.
I believe in capitalism (albeit more in the European model than the American one). But even if you *don't* believe in capitalism, for the reasons above you ought not to conflate capitalism with climate change.

Even once we introduced things like arrow heads, mussel shells and round stones to represent the I owe you...Whatever name you give to the system we need, it has to be a system that is based on the reality of things. The concept of overtaking capitalism is flawed like you say, however it is a primary road block. The solution is I don't know we cannot seem to care. I do think the European capitalism is objectively better tho.

Whether or not you like that, we may as well leverage it by tying the fortunes of individuals, businesses and politicians to progress towards net zero. Tax fossil fuels and subsidise green energy. Put bounties on important technological breakthroughs. Raise awareness so that businesses and politicians who are slowing down the progress towards net zero find it harder to sell their products or get elected.

I did not realise until this video just how bad climate change is. I always thought the whole "mass extinction" thing was just over-egged media.
Why is it that when I've done Google searches of the of the impact of climate change, this stuff does not show up as the main threat or with the level of certainty we actually have. It always sounded speculative.
It always seemed to me that the main threats were droughts and floods, which are bad but bearable. This is catastrophic.

Finally they're mentioning the Permian Extinction, AKA "The Great Dying" which had a 0.01 CO2 PPM increase, we're putting more than 2.5 CO2PPM into the air. I just wish you'd touched on the methane hydrate, permafrost and fossil carbon beneath it. We're set up to see a 20c spike once positive feedback loops overtake human emissions as the dominant greenhouse mechanism, a point we're less than 10 years away from.

We won't solve this in a generation. It's going to be a multigenerational endeavour and nothing of a global endeavour on this scale has ever been attempted before. Hell building a space colony of 200 interconnected space stations looks easy in comparison.

Because change is still too gradual for human eyes to see. When it stops being so "gradual", it'll be already too late.
And current events are not helping the cause to limit the global climate change, alongside other efforts on saving the environment.

I recently discovered your channel and after watching the "which Star Wars planets could exist" video made me want to create a planet for a fanfic i am writing.
Well the Earth like planet has somewhat the size of Krypton/Jupiter and has 3 suns and four moons. The planet is a p type triple star system.
But i kinda wondered if our sunsystem was on a p type tryple star system place where should the Goldilocks zone be and how does a p type triple star system affect day/night and wether? And how long is a year and day?
For the contunents i was planning that they are Australia like.
I personally think Jupiter and Saturn would be in the Goldilocks zone if our sun was a p type triple star system.

I wish I could believe we can turn things around, but I just don't believe it anymore. We need major, infrastructural changes to our society and even how we live that governments and the average person are just not willing to make. Especially when you have fossil fuel producers and lobbyists fighting AGAINST all this change at every turn. They view everything with profit margins and nothing on the impact of their actions.
Individual action can only accomplish so much. We need to go after the fossil fuel industry and other large corporations who continue to pollute. At the VERY least, we need to stop coal production worldwide, but that has significant ramifications for several countries still vastly dependent on it.
And I've honestly given up hope that we can change things before it's too late.

This is really great! But I fear it's also too "climate-centric". Which is to say, the major driving forces of biodiversity loss relate to land use. And this isn't necessarily addressed by "solutions" that are "climate friendly". Some of the climate solutions are really horrific for biodiversity - EVs because of the mining for Lithium Ion batteries, GMO agriculture because of drought resistance (which ensures we rely on a very few strains of crops). As a couple of examples. The IPCC and the IPBES put out a joint report from a workshop in 2020, and it is really emphasizing that we have to address both crises as interdependent and equal. Here, this suggests that addressing climate change will address the sixth mass extinction. But I am not sure that's really fair to the problem of biodiversity that is beyond just GHG emissions. There are all kinds of "climate solutions" that are a very real threat to biodiversity. And that doesn't quite get addressed here. Just constructive feedback. Not meant to be a harsh criticism.
Go look at the Keeling Curve and let it sink in what you are looking at. Then go look at some satellite views of the earth at night and let that sink in. People seem to lack the ability to see just how huge our impact on the planet is and just how hopeless our situation has become. It's all a question of scale and we are blind to just how massive an effort is now required to have the slightest effect on our self-inflicted predicament.
One thing we can do now, that doesn’t depend on any government or any intergovernmental panels meeting every 10 years, is to go vegan 🌱. Just the reforestation that could be done with the lands dedicated to cattle ranching and grains produced for them would already help a lot, let alone all the methane we could prevent from being emitted. It’s better than ditching your car, and it takes less sacrifice.
it really very sad and disappointed that all the effort and action taken to reduce emissions and to stop climate change all of that could be wiped out by uncontrolled sadden volcanic eruptions
As a scientist and educator I have been following and observing the effects of climate change in real time over the past 50 years. That said I have been naïve in thinking that the powers that be would address climate change by now. Clearly the only thing that works is financial pressure. For this reason I am convinced that with 70% of US. GDP supported by consumers and 90% of all businesses be small businesses we need to empower these two groups to select and produce goods and services that are sustainable. To accomplish this a data supported insignia needs to be created such that consumers can readily see which products are moving toward net zero. Similar to the designation of organic foods. Perhaps the IPCC could take this on and charge companies for their independent verification of their level of net zero efforts. Clearly consumers are interested in purchasing sustainable goods and services. Why else would green washing become so prevalent? Thank you and be well.
