And I will be signing up! This is the ONE class I have been dying to take locally and that literally nobody offers in the way that you do (starting from basics).
You articulated everything I was feeling. I don't know much about patternmaking but I KNOW making a fitted bodice is hard. I appreciate that you'll start with skirts and work your way up. This is the format of my dreams. See you in class!
The minute you said "you've got to learn pattern drafting to become a designer" I sought out a book and worked through it. It's tough sometimes to go through this on your own, so an online class would have helped me a lot. Skirts were first. Worst parts were, indeed, trousers (I think I made more mockups than I can remember for the crotch seam, found out traditional tailors left a 3 inch (!!) seam allowance for fittings and never sewed the darts for the first fitting), bodice and sleeve variations. Then off to different dart stuff, ruffles, buttons, pockets, etc. Then jackets. Coats were not included (which left me at a loss the first moment), but I could manage to construct and sew that one on my own. My book lacked the so easy kimono sleeves, underwear, hoods or caps and some in-depth knowledge about stretchy fabrics and corsetry. No word about draping. It was also crazily full of abbreviations that you had no reference table for. But I can construct most of the basic shapes I need now. So I think I'm skipping this class, I think. For any beginner: This order - skirts first - is the best, and it's really helpful to have someone you can ask if problems occur. Recommend!
I've been wanting to hone my pattern making skills. I tanked pattern making class in school because I was so confused with the bodice. This class is exactly what I need and I'm looking forward to your approach!
You are so brilliant. Exactly.!! starting with the skirt would help people who are now learning and are new. The bodice is so complex and could turn off newbies.
Intrigued by your class. I learned pattern making in the 1990's, then went to do something else... In Lasalle College, we were taught to work on the skirt first, from which we learned all the basic pattern manipulations, like darts, pleats, pockets, flares, gathers, etc. Only after we have ould learn to work the bodice. You are right, the skirt is the easiest place to start. I am getting ready to pick up sewing and pattern making again, and may possibly sign up for your class, if it's still available.
Hi Zoe, I've been watching your videos for years and I love them! It has improved my fashion sketching. However, I've always been intimidated by actually learning how to sew and make patterns. Over the years I've attempted, and the bodice is just so intimidating, and I'm an awkward shape/size so it's been really frustrating. So after not touching my machine for about 6 years, I'm just now seeing this video, and I can't wait to take this course! I appreciate you providing a simpler approach where we can increase the difficulty as we go, as well as giving us building blocks for full customization instead of one specific piece. I just want to say thank you! I fell off of sewing, but I'm ready to try again and I believe this will be the class to get me over that hump! I appreciate you! 😄💜
@zoehang I was just about to sign up for GFH pattern making master class but just found yours. I think I will start with you first. It’s been a while and I use to use commercial patterns (that were a headache). My mom told me at a young age stop using them and make your own pattern. You are about to make my and my mom’s dream come true.
My issue is with people not actually showing the darts process from start to finish. Where exactly are they getting their measures from? They just say from my chest to blah blah... like I'm a multi module learner I can't just learn like that. Also, with them not saying what settings their machines are for what type of fabric. I know each machine is different but I think it can give us an idea 💡 of where the settings should be or even start from somewhere. I'm a complete new sewer but these are the things that I at least have issues with. I need to hear, watch and do to learn 😭 I don't want to pay $20 for a patreon that assumes I know what I'm doing. I will join yours and hopefully I find the instructor that I've been longing for in this journey
I've signed up! I've been learning to sew for about a year now just for fun but I realize this is something I want to take more seriously and learn more outside of solely youtube videos. Looking forward to the education.
How do I sign up for Patreon I want to make my own patterns. I want to put my designs into patterns. And change patterns I have. Many thanks, Your classes are outstanding. You have inspired me to go back to my younger self.. when my mother 57 years ago sneaked a Vogue magazine from our little drug store into our house on Sunday .. in my island home I leaned her thoughts on fabric. She put newspaper on the floor and made her own patterns as she is the best dressed… in a poor community. Many thanks, Moya Greene
Zoe! keep up the good work! It would be really nice to see you make videos about making tech packs or more so the technical designs, maybe as a class on patreon or make videos here where you pull garments from runways and show us how you make them in illustrator would really be so niceee
Very thankful for this tbh, it's the one class I can't find properly explained, unfortunately I will miss out on having a community and doing things at the same time, but I will sign up as soon as I get more free time
Zoe I want to make crochet garments, but not the usual ones you know the sweaters and the bralettes, I want to learn how can I make different necklines and sleeves and silhouettes, basically take my skills to the next level in crocheting, do you think the course would help as it covers pattern making extensively
I don't know anything about crochet so I don't know if my class will help with crocheted garments. Also, we won't be on bodices for many months yet. Skirts and trousers first.
You may have addressed this already but just to clarify, if we join later, will we still get access to previous lessons? And what kinds of supplies will we need? Do you think your class would be good for hobbyists, who are usually trying to fit for specific bodies rather than a standard block?
1. Yes, you can access older lessons. 2. Supplies will be discussed in the first week of class. 3. You can use the measurements I use or your own set of measurements.
They will be posted videos, not livestreams. We have monthly zoom meetups for fun, one Sunday in the middle of the month, but if you can’t make it, I post the recording of that too. You can also post questions in advance that I will answer during the zoom.
It sounds super beginner friendly. I just bought a sewing machine and literally have no clue on what to do with it or put it together. If it’s still available I’ll definitely be signing up
Zoe Hong. I do happen to believe and agree with what you've said here about how patternmaking for fashion courses tend to start. I like your idea of the skirt pattern making and designing process becoming more of a modular concept. This is much more like it. If you go in 2 most fast fashion retail stores. You have a bewildering amount of choice of Styles and concepts. I would like a pattern making course tailored around what you find in modern fashion. Your pattern making course I think comes pretty close to that. We have to make pattern making relevant to 2023. Have you thought about using modern technology to make it easier as well? Like taking a picture of a garment you already own and then copying in Adobe Illustrator for example? I think you should also do a module on your pattern making course on how to copy clone your existing clothing accurately and properly. Not this quick fix over edited stuff you get here on TH-cam. I think that a course that shows every part of the process in intricate detail would be a very good step forward. Zoe. I really do think you've hit on something here and I wish you very good luck on running this course. Pure.
Hello Zoe. I want to learn pattern-making and would love to join your classes. But before that, I have a few queries: 1. Are all the videos available in the class, or would I have to wait a week or so for the next video? 2. Can I finish the pattern-making course at my own pace? Like if I am done with a class, can I start with the next video immediately?
This is a question that applies far into the future of the class, but will you go over drafting lining patterns? I’ve always been confused about how to line certain garments (for example, bottoms with a front fly, vents on jackets, etc).
Do you think it’s still beneficial for us to start these classes even though we would want to do menswear instead? I find it hard to get into womenswear because I don’t feel inspire to create women’s clothing.
@zoehongteaches, thank you for all your lovely content! I’m interested in taking the pattern making courses for the same reasons as many of the people here. How do you recommend I choose the size of a dress form? Also, about how many hours of content are the pattern making courses?
Your dress form should be the size of whoever's going to wear your clothes most. That could be you, of the size of your fit model for your brand, which should be the middle of your size range. I don't count by hours. You get a new pattern lesson every week. There are already 57 lessons posted, with many bonus lessons.
@@zoehongteaches thanks for the response! That sounds good :) Do you (plan to) cover grading? I didn’t see that on the list of videos on your patreon, but maybe I missed it

Hi Zoe! Ok, taking the fashion design and Illustration class includes the pattern making. Will this class also show how to draft the pattern in illustrator? I love Illustrator, however, it took a minute to grasp basic concepts, but I wasn't taught how to insert pattern measurements to be able to go back and print my pattern.
Hi Zoe! Are blocks the same thing as a sloper? My daughter is a design student and oftentimes a sloper she needs is missing from the school’s inventory or already being used by someone. I would love to offer her a class from you if it means she can make her own sloper.

In that case, would I be missing the video session components? I know you mentioned you do answer questions but sometimes it's easier to just verbally explain an issue and get feedback that way

The instructions don't even match up. The front top is the same depth across the chest as the back. Arm holes are the same. I've completed a cert 3 in fashion design and development. So I know pattern making, but I can't pattern make without my blocks. And mens block instructions books 🤦🏼♂️ there's like 2 and they aren't great.🤞
This class starts each section with blocks, so I have taught the skirt block, but that's not the focus, we are working on many skirt blocks now.
Does the class require knowing how to use a sewing machine?
I am literally have 0 actual knowledge about making clothes. I only hand sew and make fixes
No sewing machine required.
I joined your double cappuccino!
Uh, yeah. Why DO we start with bodices?? Starting with skirts is a great idea!
Right? I hate armholes. hahahaha
@@zoehongteaches hahaha, I hate boobs. I have tiny ribs so when I made my own bodice block in class, it looked SO WEIRD.
Hahahaha bodies are all so weird haha
