This is without a doubt the absolute best cover made of this song. I grew up on S & G and when I saw that Disturbed had redone it I asked myself why? Why would anyone try to remake an absolute classic that we all know and love. Then I heard it and I understood why. This version is better than the original and I never thought I would say that but here I am saying it.
I would say that the two versions works together in total harmony. Even Paul Simon said that their version served as a warning. Disturbed took it further since we ignored the warning. The biggest fear though that we get another even darker version in 30 years from now that tells us what happened since we kept ignoring it.
@@mort58 Never thought of that. Cool but scary thought, when you consider what the "writing on the wall" actually is. A reference not only to the actual words written on the subway walls, which is absolutely accurate and true (I grew up in the 60s near NYC). THat is SOOO NYC! First thing you would see when getting off the subway was just that. The warnings of scripture that often compelled us to Repent! and about Judgement, in stark contrast to all the other crazy, often lewd graffiti and gang tags. But the song originally came out on a Gospel/Folk album (Wednesday Morning 3AM) and has brilliant NYC urban imagery connected to the Biblical imagery. Lyrical genius. The words that form supernaturally on the wall in the Biblical book of Daniel are telling the king: YOU HAVE BEEN JUDGED AND FOUND WANTING. YOUR KINGDOM IS TAKEN FROM YOU. And of course by the next morning, the king is dead and Babylon has fallen. How often is New York City likened to a modern day Babylon! Imagine a song following that! Great idea.
Simon and Garfunkel was my favorite duo and loved their songs. I graduated high school in 1964 when this was highly popular. It was my favorite then, and my favorite now, but for some reason, I heard this version today and I cannot get enough of it. I sent it to all my friends. David Draiman is Jewish and I heard an interview with him on a Jewish podcast being interviewed about the Oct. 7th tragedy. He sings the same emotions he spoke of the death of all these innocent Jewish people. It is as if the way he sings is so powerful, he is both very gentle, yet very angry with the events in Israel. What a voice, so powerful, so emotional, and yet so beautiful. I will never get tired of listening to him sing Sounds of Silence.
The singer of Disturbed is David Draiman. He was raised in Chicago as an Orthodox Jew and was trained as a Cantor as was his grandfather and father. I think he left the Orthodox Jewish faith in his twenties. He joined the heavy metal band Disturbed in 1994 or 1995. At all of their concerts they acknowledge suicide victims by drug overdosed victims and bring someone on stage in recognition of their loved one who lost their lives due a to drug overdose or suicide. They recorded the cover of "The Sound of Silence" in 2016. It currently has 1,051,853,839 views and I believe is the 3rd most watched cover video.
The way he sings the song building each verse louder and stronger than the last draws your attention to the real meaning of the story. I was horrified and amazed. I absolutely love it.. opened my eyes and soul.
This song was written in the '60 when the world was reeling from wars. I really believe Paul Simon wrote it a warning to the world the countries need to actually listen to each other instead of talk without listening. Also, music was highly censored then. I liked the original version very much, but I love Disturbed rendition. It's so haunting and breathtaking.
Disturbed -The Sound of Silence video has over 1 BILLION views in 8 YEARS. 1 Billion seconds is equal to 32 years. This means, that more than three almost four people, had to click play, every second of every day for 8 years. WOW!!!
This is my favorite version of this song. David Draiman is one of the finest vocalists of this generation! I'd heard this song all my life, but never liked it, because I'm not a folk music fan. But when I heard this version, I actually listened! Fabulous. Just a fabulous masterpiece!
The best version of this song. I heard this 6 months ago, first, I fell in love with David's voice, second, David successfully sent the dagger into my soul with an urgency I never noticed in the original. I have to listen to this version every night before I can go to bed now!
My Favorite version of The Sound of Silence. Disturbed Nailed the true meaning of the song. I wish that Disturbed would do More powerful songs like this. We need it.
I love this version of the song so much. Another great melodic Disturbed song is Hold On to Memories. Very beautiful, emotional song about remembering those who have passed on. Darkness is a beautiful older song of theirs. Their cover of If I Ever Lose My Faith In You is also great. David has an amazing voice.
Someone commented on another reaction that Simon and Garfunkel sang a warning of what could happen and Disturbed sang about what happened. Made emotional sense to me.
David Draimen's cover is so powerful and moving it really touches the soul. It's on my playlist sometimes on repeat I love it so much. I am 69 and listen to them all the time with my 7 year old grandson he is addicted to Rock and Metal. You have to listen to his other songs his lyrics are absolutely Genius!
I really enjoy watching people’s reactions hearing Disturbed’s cover! It truly is magical! I’ve heard it many times, and yet my body’s goosebumps and the hair on my head standing up STILL HAPPENS!! Ever has a song affected me like this.
I grew up with the original. But this is a continuum into another generation. And by far my favorite. I have listening to it many many times and still have chills and emotion.
Even Paul Simon thinks Disturbed nailed this cover. This version somehow makes the lyrics more poignant to the songs meaning. It makes S&G's original seem prophetic.
u could also say S&G OG version was a warning and Disturbed cover was the answer like "Well, now u F up (I warned u)" something along these line o.o thats just what i feel now in 2024
🔥🔥David Draiman is Awesome!!!! What a voice!! I prefer this version with this video, because watching David's face while he sings this is Perfection for me! The video is so Beautiful!! ❤
This isn't a cover. This is an experience in your soul. A journey! Calm to rage about our world. 70 years old and this my absolute favorite version with goose bumps, tingles and tears.
I have this song set as my phone alarm so I hear it at least once a day. I always have to listen to the whole thing and it gives me goosebumps every damned time.
This is one of my personal Top 3 covers of all time… the other two are Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt and Pentatonix doing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah
I agree, Johnny Cash's "Hurt" was so moving, Disturbed doing "Sound of Silence".....Wow, my favourite version. I will have to listen to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". Thank you for that!
I can listen to this version over and over, again and again. Each time moving me to tears. This is by far my favorite version of this song. You truly feel every word and every note in your bones. It's chillingly beautiful and so soothing at the same time.
Hey guys, it’s great to see you again. I’ve been gone for a little while. As a full-blown Pentaholic I never thought I would say this. But I love this version. It is absolutely my favorite. Of course Pentatonix comes second. This song introduced me to DISTURBED, I am not even remotely a metal fan. But I have now explored much of their catalog and really enjoy it. Never thought I’d say that. But I like to say that if David is singing, I’m listening. I haven’t read all the comments, but if you wanna hear something similar to this particular video, you should check out DON’T TELL ME it’s an original power ballad that he did with Ann Wilson from HEART. this is the first and only time that they have collaborated on one of their albums with anyone else. I’ve seen this video hundreds of times. In fact, I used to check the view count on this video every day from when it was at 823 million. It is now over 1 billion. Stan, even though you’ve already heard them you should introduce Lee Jay to more of their catalog. I personally would recommend, of course, DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS but also, ones you may not of heard. THE LIGHT…A REASON TO FIGHT & HOLD ON TO MEMORIES. Greetings from Southern California. 🤗💋🥰
I'm 72, and you experience this song! David has a gloriously haunting voice!!! I tried to not like this version, but I'm glad to say that I'm not in that billion that has watched them and more than once, you need to listen with your eyes closed and just listen to his voice, it's epic to say the least!
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. If you really HEAR what they are saying about people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, you will realize that they were decades ahead of TEXTING!
As a creative poet, Paul Simon already sensed the future, as the arrival of television in homes in the 1960s made thinking people realize that technological development did not stop at televisions. After all, even then, there was already advanced technology in the world.
New here! This is my favorite cover of this song. I like the version he sings live on the Conan Show best. It is AMAZING! Disturbed also does a great cover of Genesis’ Land of Confusion. Y’all should check that one out.
To me, there are 3 versions that master this song through time. The original, which carried the warning: Disturb's version, which carries the anger: and Geoff Castellucci's version, which carries the sadness and loss. I love all three equally. Each is an absolute tour de force.
I was not a fan of this song because it's a bit sad. BUT this version , there's just something about his voice! I can't stop listening to it. AMazing!!!
I like so many people when they find this cover we listen to it ALL THE TIME… I’ve heard it soooooo much now, I’ve got a high end hifi system & it’s so good at loud volume. The live version he done on Conan is also great! BUT I think you guys need to review the - Disturbed - Sound Of Silence - Cyril REMIX - it’s on another level & will get you bouncing out your seat 😅
It took me a long time to listen to this because I love the #Pentatonix version so much. After hearing the #Disturbed version I had to admit I had room in my heart for both versions. I won't choose one over the other, because they both evoke different emotions.
This is absolutely my favorite version & video of this song❤ I've always loved the original & felt that it could not be matched... UNTIL... well, you know! ❤😊
People hearing without listening. For 50 years I heard this song, yet never listened to the words.. until now. I somehow feel guilty about that. I never dared disturb the sound.. of silence.
I am fortunate to have lived through that part of the years going past when Simon and Garfunkel brought this original out. So much great music in those days. But, it is so nice to see a current group put this cover back together for another great run. I liked Simon and Garfunkel's version, but I love this version. Thanks for the great review.
Am I the only one who remembers the original meaning of the song? As a child of the 60s, growing up near New York City, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the "words of the prophets" *really WERE written on the subway walls! LITERALLY!* Usually scriptural warnings along the lines of "Repent!” and “Judgement is coming!" Not always readily noticeable amidst all the other crazy graffiti and gang tags, but definitely THERE in stark contrast. That is SSOOO New York City! The NYC urban imagery is brilliant and so historically true. But the parallel Biblical imagery combined with the NYC urban imagery is beyond brilliant. (I still have "Wednesday Morning 3AM from 1964! A flat out Gospel/Folk album) The irony of being utterly alone even in a sea of "ten thousand people, maybe more" - In my memories I envision the neon lights of Broadway & Times Square back in the day when it was booming! Throngs of people, but no one making eye contact. That was an unwritten rule. People not communicating anymore on a deep emotional level. *Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you* … “Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! How I have longed to gather your children into my arms as a mother hen gathers her chicks! But you would not." And Jesus wept. *And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made!* And they/WE worshipped the golden calf. False idols and gods of our own making. *"The sign flashed out its warning,* in “the words that it *was forming”* … the *“words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls”* … And just what were the words that supernaturally *were forming* supernaturally on the wall in the book of Daniel? They told the king: YOU HAVE BEEN JUDGED AND FOUND WANTING. YOUR KINGDOM IS TAKEN FROM YOU. And by the next morning, the king is dead and Babylon has fallen. Just like that. How often is New York City likened to a modern-day Babylon? How long will we be silent? How long will we ignore the warnings? The consequences of silence are devastating. David does a phenomenal job of capturing that angst of wanting so badly to reach out to someone and not being able to. AND of knowing the consequences. David has the ability to EMOTIONALLY connect. Not just with the song, but with HIS AUDIENCE. That is something that can't be taught. It's just who he is. Someone who truly cares. God Bless! Shalom Shalom!
Another amazing cover is Tom Ball! I found his cover recently and it blew me away. I still love Disturbed's version and it's my top favorite but Tom definitely is a close 2nd.
I was in 10th or 11th grade in high school and I remember the first time I heard this song, when Sinon and Garfunkel sang it. They were not alone in what they saw happening arround them - but they were quite alone in the way they sang about it. The warning is there, plain and simple. And understated. The lyrics were radical for the period. Simple as that. Paul Simon has said that Disturbed has done the finest cover of Sound of Silence, and he has it on his personal song list. The original opened the conversation quietly about what we now understand better looking back. And the original has continued in its quiet way, warning. I've heard covers of songs for decades. All sorts of songs, from individuals to groups. Some have been very good, many have been unsuccessful. Usually that happens when a person or a group tries to put 'their twist' on the original. But for the Sound of Silence, the song, ,the lyrics, demanded to be heard clearly, be videoed in black and white so people would not miss what the message is. The meshing of sound and image, voice and orchestration and image is unique and complete. I have a feeling that the song took hold of Disturbed and sank into their hearts and souls. That doesn't happen often. I am just gobsmacked that I have had the privilege of hearing the song when it was first sung and now when its message has been spoken clearly and with incredible passion and utter volcal control by David D. As far as the presentation by the two gentlemen in the video, please remember that picking yor nose is pretty much reserved for the eternal pause at a stop light while drivning, or for any time when you're on a motorcycle or just walking. It's distracting to see during a song with a definite pulse and building rhythm of its own. Not to mention a message that is still pertinent today. Also, there are songs which should not be interrupted by monologue of any type. And this one is one of those songs. Let the song speak. Then comment. Please.
Hold on to memories is another softer song. This is my favourite cover of this song. Recommend watching him do this live on the Conan show. Even though he was really poorly and had to sit down to perform. ❤❤
❤🎶❤I totally agree with your comments, Hold on to the Memories popped into my mind too!! And the Conan version is excellent, I hear he wept too after! Not sure but emotions are definitely raw for him!! 👏David!
You don’t just listen to this, you absorb it, it’s a work of art, a masterpiece……..
This is without a doubt the absolute best cover made of this song. I grew up on S & G and when I saw that Disturbed had redone it I asked myself why? Imagine a song following that! Great idea.
Until this song I'VE NEVER GOTTEN COLD CHILLS THROUGH AN ENTIRE SONG BEFORE
I only truly understood the meaning of this song after hearing Disturbed cover. With him, you feel the music into your soul.
Totally agree it brings goosebumps out on me and a sadness
Am I the only one who finds it very satisfying watching a calligraphy pen writing musical notes?❤💚
I enjoyed that. It was as though the notes were ELEVATED in meaning. It was great!

He's a good soul!
Watch him perform this live on the Conan Show it is mind blowing and he was sick during the performance and still crushes it!!
Quite sick, too! Didn't he have like a 103 fever?❤💚
They added some autotune to it, without him knowing it. You can clearly hear the small second its there. He got pissed when he found out.
I thought that the Conan performance was SUPERLATIVE.

I'd argue this is not only the best cover of this song, but it's a strong contender for best cover of anything ever.
I find myself having a hard time considering this a cover anymore. They totally made this their own. Even Simon said this is their song now lol.
Best cover I've ever heard (I'm 78...heard a few).
One of the best ever. His performance on Conan was even more impressive because he was profoundly ill that night.
To me this is how it was meant to be sung.
Goosebumps every time!!! I am addicted.
Ich auch
This version gives me goosebumps every time I hear it too!! I'm addicted.❤

The conan show performance of this is even a touch better believe it or not!
The best version of this song. I heard this 6 months ago, first, I fell in love with David's voice, second, David successfully sent the dagger into my soul with an urgency I never noticed in the original. I have to listen to this version every night before I can go to bed now!
from what i've seen, this is Paul Simon's favorite cover. the original was a warning. Disturbed is anger over the warning being ignored.
My Favorite version of The Sound of Silence. Disturbed Nailed the true meaning of the song. I wish that Disturbed would do More powerful songs like this. We need it.

Hold On to Memories made me sob like a newborn baby. Absolutely beautiful song with so much sadness and loss but also heart and joy
Someone commented on another reaction that Simon and Garfunkel sang a warning of what could happen and Disturbed sang about what happened. Made emotional sense to me.
Exactly🙌🏼
Totally blown away with the way this was done, his voice is strong even when soft this is a vocal masterpiece
The live version they do live on Conan is even better.

It's beautiful and David is absolutely beyond underrated in my opinion. He's even better live.
I grew up with the original. But this is a continuum into another generation. And by far my favorite.
I have listening to it many many times and still have chills and emotion.
Even Paul Simon thinks Disturbed nailed this cover. This version somehow makes the lyrics more poignant to the songs meaning. It makes S&G's original seem prophetic.
u could also say S&G OG version was a warning and Disturbed cover was the answer like "Well, now u F up (I warned u)" something along these line o.o thats just what i feel now in 2024
Simon and Garfunkel even told Disturbed what a great job they did on their cover of this song. Disturbed nailed it!
🔥🔥David Draiman is Awesome!!!! What a voice!! I prefer this version with this video, because watching David's face while he sings this is Perfection for me! The video is so Beautiful!! ❤

I have this song set as my phone alarm so I hear it at least once a day. I always have to listen to the whole thing and it gives me goosebumps every damned time.
Simply Epic. The best recorded song I’ve ever heard and video is amazing. Disturbed absolutely own The Sounds of Silence now.
Great picks. Also great is Gary Jules version of Mad World by Tears For Fears and Ugly Kid Joe's version of Cat's In The Cradle
@ nice. I’m also quite fond of Postmodern Jukebox with Morgan James covering Aerosmith’s Dream On… and the Talking Heads covering Take Me to the River
I never get tired of listening to this version of a great song!!❤
Absolutely amazing cover his voice is fantastic!! This version just hits you in a way you wouldn't espect!
Absolutely beautiful and emotional rendition.
My absolute favorite as well!!
I'm 72, and you experience this song! David has a gloriously haunting voice!!! I tried to not like this version, but I'm glad to say that I'm not in that billion that has watched them and more than once, you need to listen with your eyes closed and just listen to his voice, it's epic to say the least!
That's now in that group, slip of the fingers there, sorry!
this is my favorite version and everytime i get teary eyed. the message of it still apllies to todays problems.
Definitely this version is the best!😊❤
watch him doing this live on COHEN OBRIAN SHOW
That is very good, but this video puts the song in an absolute stongest story of a song ever. Love the video, such excellent work.
He wasn’t in the best of health during the OBrian show; so the singing isn’t as stellar as in the video
The way the song shoukd be sung. With raw emotion and anger at the inability for people to listen.
This is definitely my favorite cover! It’s such a powerful delivery of the song. I, too, get goosebumps mostly during the second half of the song!
You must watch their performance of this song on the Conan O'Brien Show❤❤❤
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. If you really HEAR what they are saying about people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, you will realize that they were decades ahead of TEXTING!

Absolutely perfect lyrics!
@@candicewitzkoske3155 The most magnificent👏
David's version is definitely the best. I'm so loving it!
David Draiman is the fucking GOAT 🙌🙌
This is a datk piece of art. Absolutely beautiful! I still get the chills. ❤❤❤
this cover is just out of this world I dont think anything can beat it ever!
My favorite version, hands down.
Having said that, you should watch the live version on Conan
Definitely, it’s Even Better
This is absolutely the best version! It hits so hard!😢
Definitely the best cover of this song, Dan Vasc s is amazing too! great reaction!! 👏❤
This is the only version that comes close to being comparable to the original. This cover hits the heart just like the original.
I remember when they were so young. This song was a masterpiece. Now it's INCOMPARABLE. Better than the original
New here! This is my favorite cover of this song. I like the version he sings live on the Conan Show best. It is AMAZING! Disturbed also does a great cover of Genesis’ Land of Confusion. Y’all should check that one out.

Since Simon and Garfunkel this is very, very excellent. I really like this song, the voice and the song is very strong.
Me too, love it and it's my fav! So well done and put together. ❤
I was not a fan of this song because it's a bit sad. BUT this version , there's just something about his voice! I can't stop listening to it. AMazing!!!
This is a great cover! I also like the live one with him and Myles Kennedy. It has great harmonies.
I like so many people when they find this cover we listen to it ALL THE TIME… I’ve heard it soooooo much now, I’ve got a high end hifi system & it’s so good at loud volume. I saw Disturbed at a festival this year, and they were great!! David Draiman was a trained cantor. He can really sing.
It took me a long time to listen to this because I love the #Pentatonix version so much. After hearing the #Disturbed version I had to admit I had room in my heart for both versions. I won't choose one over the other, because they both evoke different emotions.
This is 💯 my best version of the song. I get goosebumps everytime. Listen to it over 100 times easy. ❤😮
Absolutely The Best Cover song I have ever heard. Definitely check out his performance on Conan. Somehow, it's even better. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
The military should play The Sound of Silence by David of Disturbed , this is what a man sounds like ! What a great performance!
I never dared disturb the sound.. of silence.
10000% my absolute favorite version hands down!!!! One of my favorite songs!!! ❤
Disturbed has other songs that show a little softer side. Hold on To Memories and A Reason to Fight. Both might make you cry.
Have you done a reaction to Disturbed by Dan Vasc ?
Dan's is Amazing!
David Draiman is the lead singer of Disturbed, the guy you are seeing with the Chin piercings.
David's music idol or hero was Freddie Mercury.
He has a song about memories. I cannot remember the whole title but memories is in it.
I am fortunate to have lived through that part of the years going past when Simon and Garfunkel brought this original out. So much great music in those days. But, it is so nice to see a current group put this cover back together for another great run. I liked Simon and Garfunkel's version, but I love this version. Thanks for the great review.
Notice how instruments are heard when revealed. Piano, the guitar, then drums. The songs starts with what he is seeing and then turns into a warning
A flat out Gospel/Folk album)
The irony of being utterly alone even in a sea of "ten thousand people, maybe more" - In my memories I envision the neon lights of Broadway & Times Square back in the day when it was booming! Throngs of people, but no one making eye contact. That was an unwritten rule. People not communicating anymore on a deep emotional level.
*Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you* …
“Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! How I have longed to gather your children into my arms as a mother hen gathers her chicks! But you would not." And Jesus wept.
*And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made!*
And they/WE worshipped the golden calf. False idols and gods of our own making.
*"The sign flashed out its warning,* in “the words that it *was forming”* … the *“words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls”* …
And just what were the words that supernaturally *were forming* supernaturally on the wall in the book of Daniel?
Stan, you remind me so much of my uncle Dave (sadly no longer with us❤️)! Oh and this version of S.O.S. is EPIC🤘🏼!!
Thanks guys, awesome response. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
Simon and Garf version of the song was meant to be listened to, Disturbed version was meant to be felt
I've seen Disturbed in a festival, and him with the band he had for a bit. His voice is as powerful live as on TV!
S&M enjoyed it so much that actually had to call Disturbed and tell how much much they liked it.
The music video is good but the live version from Conan is my favorite.
You have toust... listen to the Conan Live show version... it is a must. EPIC!!
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
Of course its the best cover.
I believe Paul Simon told David this version was his favorite. Even over S&G
S and G version was a warning and this version is a threat best way to put it
Goes along with the September 2017 Revelation sign.
Please.
My favorite too!❤
For me it's the original and this.
The warning, and the anger that the warning is still being ignored.
Two sides of a beautiful coin.
"Hold on to Memories". and "The Light"
I'll add Reason to Fight as well
He ROARS- like a LION!!!
LOVE, LOVE LOVE! Lori - Iows
"Hold on to the Memories"....
Best cover song ever done 🔥🔥
Hold on to memories is another softer song.
This is my favourite cover of this song.
Recommend watching him do this live on the Conan show. Even though he was really poorly and had to sit down to perform. ❤❤
❤🎶❤I totally agree with your comments, Hold on to the Memories popped into my mind too!! And the Conan version is excellent, I hear he wept too after! Not sure but emotions are definitely raw for him!! 👏David!
