    To clarify the Y2K thing, it was 100% a real thing as @Blue Shift said. The reason we didn't see computer programs failing en masse causing chaos for businesses everywhere, was a LOT of hard work by software developers to refactor how their programs stored dates in the years leading up to 2000.

      Same with people denying climate change because the hole in the ozone suddenly isn’t a thing anymore, not talking about the huge effort that went into quick banning of those gasses used in hairspray and shit

      it was a legit bug. It was sort of easily fixed by a patch for most things. A quick downloaded patch would have fixed it in most cases. Just problem is during that time most things that needed it were not connected to the internet like they are today. So yea the govt ran a big campaign to get people/companies to check their stuff.

    • @Cascanet

      @@thondr the main problem was that you did not really have deployment tools for most systems. Online updates were not really a thing in 1999. And yes, the fixes were not that complicated but you needed to install them on the effected systems. Just take house access systems with a time based access which are sometimes not even today connected to the internet for security reasons. If you did not go to the physical server with a physical storage device and did the update it might have happened that you would be locked out of the control room or a nuclear plant.

    the Y2K "bug" was real actually and people dont actually realize how much of an effort it was for programmers to fix everything before 2000 happen which is why everyone laughs at the situation because those people did such a great job updating everything that nothing really happen except a few minor things.

    I have watched drama time for nearly a decade and never have I laughed more than I did with “A house divided”. That story literally brought to life every fear I have ever had with having a roommate situation (which is why I have never had one lol). Horrifying at times but great story and one that I will listen to again in the future and probably laugh just as hard lol 😂

    Hey, I'm the author of the burger story! It was really cool to be able to get my story on the show; my favourite stories tend to be the ones that focus on random games people have never heard of, and I'm glad I remembered that I too have played a random game people have never heard of.
    It was pretty funny seeing the chat calling me a paid shill, because in hindsight I may have gone a tad overboard explaining the details of the game which had zero relevance to the story. Still though, I'm glad I was able to put the spotlight on a 20-year old game that's still running. Maybe if enough of the chat goes and tries the game out now, I can get hired for realsies.

    • @Darro85
      @Darro85 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apologies but I had to stop watching it live because of the fact you went into minute detail about the game that it was more of an advertisement for the game than your experience with it from the 20 or so minutes I spent watching it before I had enough. I pretty much said as much in the chat (I am Deadly Darro).

    • @muffinman2802
      @muffinman2802 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Darro85 That's fair; I probably could have cut out half of my explanation and had the story still make sense lol. In my head it felt like I needed to introduce the game properly before I went into the drama, but realistically I could've said "it's a humorous text-based stick figure rpg" and been pretty much set.
      Hindsight's 20-20, it was my first time writing in, did it late at night, didn't have anyone proof-read it, the sun was in my eyes, the boss was over-tuned, it was someone else's fault, shit game, and other such excuses.

    • @radelgirl

    “The Y2K crisis didn’t happen precisely because people started preparing for it over a decade in advance. And the general public who was busy stocking up on supplies and stuff just didn’t have a sense that the programmers were on the job." - Paul Saffo, quoted by Time magazine, 12/19/2019

    • @ignispurgatorius5297
      @ignispurgatorius5297 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yea, I hate when people insinuate that it was all just hysteria. Alot of people worked hard on making sure that none of the critical systems will be affected by it. It probably also helped that there wasn't as much of it. These days I'm pretty sure the result would be some companies going under in the blink of an eye because no one bothers to properly test their shitty code anymore or writes comprehensive documentation. It "ripens at the customer" seems to have become the norm and even the mantra..

    • @intruder313
      @intruder313 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Also it was because some older code had used 2-digit years and assumed it would have been replaced by 2000. These needed changing to 4-digit.
      It was indeed in full swing many years ahead.

    • @ASpaceOstrich
      @ASpaceOstrich ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ignispurgatorius5297 Yeah if it happened again there'd be way more issues because theres just way too much stuff to fix and also corporations would never spend money fixing it.

    A quick correction about the millennium bug from someone old enough to remember it - the specific "problem" was that a lot of old computers only saved the year as two digits, for example 99 for 1999. The panic was that when the year 2000 rolled around, all those old computers would change to 00, think they had time travelled back to 1900, and society as we know it would crumble.
    Obviously it didn't, but well played to everyone who made money off it

    You could play wow with a track pad. i did that for 10 years because i would always sit on the couch with my laptop. and there was no room for a mouse pad. i wanted to quit wow in wod but a lot of mmos that i tried needed the mouse wheel. but wow didn't require that because its so old. the biggest issue is that i could only keyboard turn when i finally got my desktop pc i had to get used to playing with a proper mouse. because i had not done that since i was 12
