    I just turned 45...the last few years I've been realizing that if I don't get up off my butt to do the things I enjoyed when I was younger....it will be too late. I waited 20 years to make it back to my annual BWCA trip. Nobody likes to do that kind of camping in my circle of friends/family....so I just started going solo, and I love it- no agenda but my own. It's a little more work, but I'm learning as I go.

      Thats great! My family weren't big tripping types either but I spent a lot of time at away camps up north when I was a kid... did lots of canoeing out trips etc. I'm pretty sure I caught the bug there :-) I'm addicted to solo tripping... simple agenda, like you said.

      Glad to hear your motivation. Don't wait till you're sixty! though, I'm certain still quite doable with a 50lb canoe.. I'd have to feel quite competent before I brought my dslr along though.

      @@filmic1 LOL I just turned 60...and I'm so stoked about going back into the park with a light canoe. I'll add a quote from some turn of the Century boxer when he was asked how it felt to be boxing at his advanced years. "I don't know but I subscribe to the old saying of how old would you be if you didn't know how old you was". It's all relative isn't it.

    What a beautiful trip! Thank you! I'm 53 and at 40 I bought a 33 lb solo canoe ( OT Pack) and it changed my life. Even after decades of canoeing. Having a light solo canoe is a ticket to adventure and I have many memories in 13 years and hope to have decades more in her. I have caught more fish from her than I can remember and camping is a dream when I can lift and carry it so easily. I'm in the deep south and only can imagine these boundary water trips right now, but one day I will...and my canoe and I will add those trips to our long list of states and places we've fished and paddled.
    There is nothing like the rythm of a canoe, and no better way to fully understand it than in a solo canoe...preferably for a few days alone...at least!
    Paddle on, everyone!

    What wonderfully crafted outdoor adventure film. I've always loved the outdoors. When I was 12ish, my grandfather capsized our little row boat. We weren't wearing life jackets. We never did. We were a good distance from shore, and I know I wasn't supposed to swim for it, but rather stay with the boat. I went for it and I made it, though I probably shouldn't have. Ever since then, I've been pretty fearful of smaller watercraft. In college I did a tandem canoe race in a river, and my paddle partner rolled the canoe. We were wearing vests. Haven't really trusted a canoe since then.
    Now, in my early 50's, nearly 30 years later, and after seeing all of these long canoe trips being posted to TH-cam, and seeing skilled paddlers slogging through rough waters, and gliding on smooth glass, it's changed my perspective about small crafts. I went solo canoeing for the first time on Loon Lake in Minnesota this past June, and loved the experience. It's really given me the itch to get a boat. Never too late to get started, I guess. Onward and Upward. :)

    The park gave you an incredible birthday gift, days and days of great weather with glassy lakes. I turned 50 last year and did a trip to the Boundary Waters in September. I was gifted with weather that was more like your 2015 trip. Rain, wind and cold temps. I convinced my brother to go with our group, his first time on a trip like that. The funny thing was I sold the trip to him with stories and photos of clear sunny days, calm lakes, amazing sunsets and the milky way laid out overhead at night. We saw the sun for 15 minutes our first day and never saw the sky after that for the next week. Good times! Love your camera work.

    I watched it last week in 20 minute chunks. I finally got enough time last night to do it justice on the big screen. It was just what I needed. When you were first in the new boat checking the stability I couldn't help thinking about a passage in one of my favorite books from my younger days. In "The Complete Wilderness Paddler" there is a section about choosing a canoe. It discusses hull shape and so on. It says that sometimes a canoe may be referred to as tippy or tender, and says that tender is always a good thing. It looks like your new boat could be considered tender. You obviously enjoyed your Ferrari. Our backcountry ethics match perfectly. Thanks for taking us along. This will go on my list of repeats for rainy days. I've already watched Karma Moose and Booth Lake close to 10 times each.

    • @JasonIrwinTumblehome
      @JasonIrwinTumblehome 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ha! I love that. "Tender" I will remember that as its a good way to describe it. I've heard a few folks say that they don't like the feeling but I sort of welcomed it. Ultimately it's less stable than a larger wider boat but I was immediately struck by the added feeling of control you get when wedged in tighter like that. I adopted very quickly and positively to that... still lots to learn though. Thank you so much for the repeat viewings!... always happy to hear they have re-watchability as thats something I'm always trying to bake in there :-). It's hard to believe how old Karma Moose is! Thanks Richard.

    • @richardreedy117
      @richardreedy117 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tumblehome, in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, and you obviously do, a “tender” boat becomes agile and a thing of beauty. Almost like a slow dance with a wife or sweetheart.

      Oh yeah those paddles are sweet. Unfortunately Hunter and Harris is no longer! I'm not sure why the shop folded but I imagine its a tough market with not a lot of turn around. I hope he continues to make paddles somehow... he was very into it and constantly trying to improve designs with feedback from customers. Talented dude.

      woo! It never gets old. It does seem to be busier than ever but late fall is usually pretty good.

    I've only watched 5 minutes of this and I'm hooked in already... I love your colour grade and your general ‘not in your face’ laid back approach, wonderful. I shall watch in instalments and savour it! Greetings from England.

    You once said that these were more than just trip videos. They are an invitation to get out and experience a wilderness canoe trip. Your videos are more than an invitation. They spark a yearning, a longing to be paddling in the wild!! Posting in the winter when everyone is starved for a paddle doesn’t hurt either.

      Thanks bro! Yeah I hope it spurs folks on to get out there... particularly if they're new to it. Posting in the winter is merely a byproduct of my slack-ass-edness!

    Superb... thoroughly enjoyable viewing on this wet and nasty day (and living on a ski hill, that is most assuredly not what you want).
    Thank you for taking us along on your trip, matey.
    Stay well,
    Steve.

    That long portage!! The first time I carried a 17' Grumman! Then some years later we got out 18' Winona and we did it in 1 carry. Man a pack and a canoe with a few stops along the way!! Great video!!

      Yeah it's a long one... much, much better with a lighter boat.
      I briefly considered a single carry... maybe next time I'll do the ol' 1 1/2 carry ;-)
