My man! 7 years later and its still good as gold! I had a similar Honda mower sitting in my shop that hasn't been used since I moved to a house with some acreage. Figured I would get it running to sell it. It was giving me some issues so I just went through everything here in the video. I pulled off the carb and cleaned it out. Put fresh gas in it and changed the oil. She runs like a dream! Thank you sir!
Sir, 3 years after you posted this video my need for it surfaced. I have not finished watching the entire video but have never seen a logical and well explained sequence of lawn mower troubleshooting that is superior to this video in the important aspects. I found your slow pace of talking to be very helpful as well. Although I've many years of balky lawn mower repairs behind me, it is easy to forget: begin with the fundamentals.
All too often I come across repair videos that claim to offer a solution but they almost always only address one of many potential possible causes. Nice to see someone that takes the time to show how to troubleshoot an issue properly and clearly explains why hes doing what hes doing. Keep up the good work!
Sir, from all of my whole heart, I thank you and appreciate you for this video and your other troubleshooting videos as well. You have an amazing delivery. Flawless. I understood completely what I needed to learn from watching and listening to your tutorial. Thank you thank you. Seriously, thank you! I've spent hours and suffered headaches and eye strain and the list goes on from trying to find an understandable tutorial until somehow I found this and I just feel like I can finally breathe again. Keep up the amazing work. You are definitely appreciated!
I found myself in need of guidance today to fix my Honda. Well, this did the trick. It started right up after I had spent over an hour trying to diagnose it and pulling on the cord. Thank you very much!
Hi! Thank you for posting that video! Today, Veteran's Day I finally decided to get out the lawn mower that I haven't used for a couple of months and I just couldn't get it to start. I went through all of your steps and the last step: going to the store to pick up a can of starting fluid did the trick. I was trying to start it earlier and I must have tried pulling over 20+ times pulling the cord. After I sprayed it with the starting fluid, just one pull and it started!!! Wow! I thought to myself that it was not going to work but it did! Amazing! I'm glad that I don't need to take it to a repair shop to get it started again.
Same here. Let my mower sit for a year. Couldn't get it to start. Cleaned the filter and replaced the sparkplug, no luck. Sprayed carb cleaner and voila ....works like a charm!
I have this exact same model (HRR216). Purchased it new back in 2006. To date, the only part I have replaced was the choke lever, and I was the one who accidently broke it. Honda sure does make great small engines & lawn mowers, and cars too.
0ctober 2018, i had given up and was ready to take lawn mower the shop... Decided to go on youtube for last attempt. Thank you for your video Peter, even though I was not able to use Starting Fluid, I instead added small amount of fuel after 3 pulls BOOM!! It started!!
Great video, thanks. My issue was 6 year old oil. I removed the old oil and added the new oil and the mower would run and start fine. I also replaced my spark plug. The old one looked okay, but this video helped me to consider replacing it. Thanks for the great video!
Same exact problem with my Craftsman Mower w/ Honda engine - excellent and patient detail! Really appreciate it. I'll repeat this comment on your No Start Part I & II also. Thank you!
Fantastic, Thank you so much. Wasn't able to do the spark plug test, don't have any deep sockets. Sprayed some "Carbi Clean" in where you said, and woohoo first go. Also, 4:41 I think lunch is ready. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video ... your gentle demeanor contrasts my frustration with my mower ... after years of infrequent starts followed by stalling a few seconds later I finally replaced the carberator this year. This really helped ... once ... the carb got clogged real quick without an air filter so I cleaned the carb ... the blades were almost locked, but it seems like this might have been air lock??? ... after I got the blades turning I got it started .... once ... lots more pulling and I headed back to the internet ... I'll try looking at the spark plug like you did .. I'll also try pushing the level the entire way forward ... thanks again
It was the spark plugs for me. The connector was disconnected from the spark plugs which made it not start. Now it's working perfectly. Thanks for the help.
Thanks for your detailed how-to! I will do the same method, but perhaps based on any small engine, the carb bowl typically comes off with a rubber ring at the base and as I found with a snow blower with old gas, that gels up and need be removed, so the bowl might have been removable after you removed the screws for additional cleaning. Perhaps your model didn't offer this. No matter, you provided the best means I have seen to get a fine Honda self-propelled twin-blade mower (chokeless) working again after years sitting without use. It used to start on the first pull every time, but now obviously it won't start with the gas gelled up and old oil. I tried "Start Your Engine" additive which worked for the snow blower, but the Honda has been literally sitting for several years. Once I get it working again...I'm putting this near $500 model at the time up for sale! Thanks again!
Thanks for your video. I appreciate it greatly. I almost took apart my carburetor after watching other videos. A voice in my head told me it had to be an easier way, and here it is. Not only I got my mower to work, I got the one I had previously to start eventually lol smh. Went from 0 mowers to 2 😊😊.
I gotta say, this was really helpful. Simple to follow and actually solved my problem (which seemed to be the same thing -- two sprays of starting fluid and everything is great). Thank you, it really was appreciated.
Same here, I don’t understand why it worked but it did. I had completely dismantled the carb, cleaned it and reinstalled it, which on a Honda engine, is no small feat. My selector is broken so I have to set the choke manually. Nothing seemed to work to get the machine started …. No idea why starting the motor with a bit of carb cleaner suddenly allows me to start the motor.
Thank you so much for your insight. I have a fairly new Honda mower with key ignition and I've had so much trouble starting, resorting to the manual pull start. Even then, the mower would take several attempts before starting. I followed your suggestion and used the cleaner directly into the carburetor after removing the air filter. It started immediately. We've very dry weather here in the Pacific Northwest and the mower has kicked up a lot of dust so I guess it went into the carburetor and gunned it up. Your video was extremely helpful. Thanks again!
My 15 year old mower has Honda motor. For the last 5 years I ONLY used non ethanol gas. Never have an issue since. End of season I store it with no gas in the tank. I change my oil and get a new spark plug before I start it in the spring. Starts every time on the first pull when I correctly set the choke. I store it indoors over the winter.
@@lukeWiz44 The Briggs and Stratton Professional series is superior. I've worked with small engines since the 80s. When I 've sent back rental equipment due to failure or performance problems not one time was it a B & S Pro. Always Hondas. I was also a big fan of Tanaka before the Hitachi buyout.
Thanks I had been overseas and my mower in storage for over 5 1/2 years. I was forgetting to pull in the handle in when I was trying to start it. Started right up! Runs like a champ. Note to run it completely out of gas and drain the tank before storing for long periods of time. That will help keep it clean for when you come back to it! Worked for me.

Thank so much for this - mine won't start and I want to cut the grass before putting up the Christmas snowman and raindeer for the children - completely forgot about that brilliant spray I used to use it to get my Range Rover started in the winter.!!
Unbeleavable but true!!! I tried certainly 80 times to start the engine without the product, and it didn't work. Two sprays of the product and my Honda started the first time. It has costed me 16.00 eur. Last year I payed 200.00 eur at my Honda dealer who "has cleaned my carburettor totally".
Thank you, that fixed my no start. I had an old can of engine degreaser, did as you demonstrated with it and it fired up first pull. Now it has cleared itself of the problem and starts first time ( the lawn mower had been unused for a couple of years)
thank you so much! after three days of struggling I narrowed it down to the carb and cleaned it and blasted some starter fluid in it and BOOM it ran like a charm!

as an FYI, with Honda Lawn mowers you want to change the spark plug out every 2 years to ensure good starting operation. Most people over look that part. Spending about 5 bucks here and there will save you a headache and time when you need your mower the most.
Thank you so much for all your help! I have the same mower and have a question: When we talk about gas that has gone bad, has corrosion in it, or is dirty, does that include a gelatinous consistency on the bottom of container? I read this as still being good as it was stored indoors during winter and when I poured it into a clear plastic container for inspection it was clear with no junk in it, just that consistency at the bottom. Anyway, I drained the little gas that was in the mower, filled it up with this gas I thought was ok, pulled off air filter & cleaned, sprayed engine cleaner, 2 sprays, into the holes where the carburetor should be. (Engine cleaner is the same thing as carb cleaner, right?). and I can't start the mower. Did I use bad gas or is gas supposed to look like I described? The other abnormality is that the speed knob is stuck on low. Last question is: Do you hold in the self-propelled knob also when starting? PS: Tried to take off the gas hose to drain but couldn't get it pulled off. Decided that I probably would not get it back on, so just turned the whole mower upside down to drain. Thanks for your help! It's tremendously appreciated!

When it started, and was rough running, you had the choke on. When the throttle lever is pushed all the way down, that is the choke position. Back it off just a touch, and it will run smooth.
