Gaspar Noé is one of the best directors alive and what also makes him great is he camera operates his own work!

Well, Benoit Debie has his merits. I love Gaspar, he might be my favourite director, but the DOP's work should never be ignored. Gaspar wants a lot of independence and the freedom to choose lights, lenses, movements, blocking. But it's rare for directors to have such knowledge. I study filmmaking and most film schools in the world, are divided in different branches. You either study Directing or Photography or Screenwriting or Editing or Audio Operator and Editor etc...

Noe operates and conceives of the shots but he leaves all the lighting to Benoit.

I love how Noé seems to feel a sense of kinship with other controversial filmmakers. He praises the work of Haneke, Solondz, and Von Trier. He's friends with Aronofsky and Refn. I like this. Boundary pushers can face some uphill battle and need to stick together!

perplexedmoth, All the critically acclaimed actors who have worked with him, have described him that exact same way. They are all extremely fond of him. Kinda ironic coming from a man who makes such shocking, in your face, darker themed movies, isn't it?

The Danish movie that Gaspar's referring to is "The Man Who Thought Life" (1969). It's a sci-fi thriller that I've not seen.

@@ajorsini7 You're right. The Danish title is MANDEN DER TÆNKTE TING and Nicolas Winding Refn's grandfather (his dad's dad) worked on the film. There's a Danish dvd available but it's not English friendly.
