Yeah, that was the most stressful part of the story. Just so poorly managed. Also that one waiter had to also greet people, ring them up, and take out the trash. And the cooking process was so poorly managed that only one order could be submitted at a time. This is really just a story of someone who had no business whatsoever managing a restaurant, bad food and poor management.

With me it's 3 tables for 2 at day 6. A table for 4 is quite easy to handle bc their patience is much longer
Table for 4 is easier to take their order cause you only interact with the host, but for table for 2 you need to interact with 2 which sucks

I eat lemons peel and all (except the seeds. I don't eat the seeds) and they are great! Definitely recommend (just make sure to take your time. The citrus can fry your tongue for a bit if you want them too fast.
from the creator's twt, it is said Vince loves to eat lemons because it's the only thing that gave a tinge of feeling on his tongue, almost something of a taste. (since every food he had eaten is 'disgusting' or 'bland')

Im glad to so everyone agrees with me that Vince just has a weird crush on Rody, I mean he took the ''food made with love'' too literally and tried to feed Rodie his girlfriend thinking hed enjoy it cause he loved her (so kind of him) and he tought hed be able to taste Rody, why? Cause he also LOVES HIM also he almost burned his chefs face off cause the made a minor mistake in the food yet Rody broke into his bedroom and office and stole his stuff yet he basically just said ''dont do it again'' and then forgot about it 2 seconds later. He also sucked at waitering and had bad reviews and Vince scribbled them out pretending like it didnt happen and kept Rody. And when he came late he notcied how drenched he was and his demonour changed and he started drying his hair and then HE GIVES HIM HIS UMBRELLA, that frame was sooo cute... too bad hes psychotic :(

kinda funny how Rody is so selfless and would sacrifice himself for others (Manon) in a relationship as a form of showing his affection. on the other hand, Vince is self-absorbed, even stated by Rody himself that his dishes *taste* like they lack affection as well.
in his relationship of being an employee to his boss, Rody sacrifices himself as an individual to continue working for Vince, even when coming in exhausted from his nightmares and not sleeping at all.
however, there is no major sacrifice from Vince, nothing changes- he has no character development in a way and is a very static person. the way he acts in his “relationships” is as something to gain/take. he has *gained* an employee, he has *gained* chefs, he *gains* attention and displays his positive reviews and awards while scorning and ignoring any negativity or critique. except when it comes to Rody…
if we look at it through this totally hypothetical lens, Rody is actually one of the first people we see Vince care about. Vince is lenient with Rody’s ‘incompetence’ and even brushes off Rody’s snooping- unless something is taken from him; which we then see his more negative reactions/ true colors towards.
Vince killing Manon was his way of giving to Rody in the only way he can imagine expressing affection: taking it from someone else. when confronted he once again lashes out and- like a totally same person- bites off Rody’s ear. once again showing how he takes from others the sacrifices he lacks.
if i were to go full “English Teacher” mode on this i’d go as far as to say that him biting off Rody’s ear is significant and symbolic. he lacks affection and won’t listen to critique/grow as a person; the outcome? take someone else’s affection (kill their s/o) and take away someone’s ear while sticking to the narrative that your little boy-crush is totally going to enjoy eating his dead ex if she’s cooked by you.
what i’m really getting at is that, outside of their work relationship, Rody doesn’t view Vince as someone to sacrifice for, there is no connection or affection felt that he would feel the need to sacrifice himself for even though it’s also just the kind and caring/selfless person he is. Vince, on the other hand views their relationship as all-encapsulating, and not only takes Rody’s time by “hiring him” to come to his dinner party, but eventually takes much more from Rody than he can offer- whether that ending be Rody’s ear or his life.
i very much find their relationship entertaining and well-thought out/written, which i feel is something you don’t see much in games anymore. i love their parallels, contradictions, and interactions between each other which definitely adds to their chemistry and a great story.
so yeah… kinda funny despite my neurotic-ass writing a whole essay for this 😅

Vincent killed Manon and wanted Rody to eat her because he thought his cooking lacked feeling and love, not the precious technique he has perfected.
He thought since Rody loved her, Rody would find it delicious so that Vince would maybe find something delicious, but not exactly, no. He took "cooking with love" too literally.
There's a bunch of endings left, I'm sure of it; the ghost in the window, Manon not showing up at all, saying no to Vince, not seeing all of Vince's dialogue, etc. There has to be more I think
Actually, I really want to bring up serious inconsistencies.
Manon wrote Vince love letters and endearing notes in the few days Rody and her broke up? Even though ending 4 clearly shows she still really loves Rody? She was over so much that there's an impression of her body on the bed ffs. Vince even says he was a simple rebound yet there's that much there that says otherwise.
One frigging haunting of Manon and that's it? She's clearly giving prophetic dreams to Rody so he doesn't die, yet all that crap up there?
Either Manon truly loves Rody and wants him safe, showing up as a ghost, saying goodbye in ending phonebooth, and sending Rody dreams of his fate, or she was cheating on Rody with Vince for a while and there's some magic BS going on with the dreams and hallucinations of someone in the street.
It doesn't actually add up in the end.
@@quinnlee-miller9792 There's a lot that seems unexplained. Like that photo of a woman that looks like Vince (and a man). It could be his parents but it feels more significant than that. Why specifically mention its covered in dust? Why frame it as 'a woman that looks like Vince' and not 'Probably his parents'? Why draw attention to his past if it's not going to really tie into anything?
It seems like Vince would've needed to date Manon before Rody started working there. Was it pure coincidence that Rody took up the offer for that job or did Vince somehow orchestrate it? And if so, how? Or did he deduce Manon's connection to Rody after her started working there and then made the plans that he did?
And then there's the party sequence. It feels like it's meant to be there more so we can learn about Rody but the detail doesn't really come around? Did he somehow drop out of college for the sake of Manon?
Who was making noise in the freezer? That happened after he'd killed Manon, right? Or is the idea that he kept her alive and used pieces of her more slowly?

What Vince says can be up to debate since he didn't really care for her, Manon could've been rebounding from Rody, or she did care but went for Vince in the moment, Manon just couldn't stay with Rody anymore cause Rody was putting so much into their relationship and not himself

I personally think it is even safer than the streets of skid row.
Perhaps Vince not being able to taste is also an allegory for him not being able to love. Whether he cared for Rody, romantically, platonically, or not at all, Vince was focused most on feeling satisfied.
With his cooking, he mastered it all but yet nobody could feel a single ounce of "love" from it, which it could be from the whole vibe produced by Vince. Rody always got a sick feeling from Vince, which possibly is what showed up in his food. With the whole vibe of both chefs and Vince, it would be enough to even feel comfortable eating the food. Like at the party that one person says "I dont know what you're talking about, isnt that what makes his food great?" Shows how disconnected or really close they are, everyone in that room wasnt Vince's friend possibly. Or just some fake friend.
How does this connect into cooking? With how he gives his dishes to Rody, it either is because its his sign of affection or because he is trying to impress Rody, because he has been always critical of the food for the same exact reason as the rest. It feels like an allegory and somewhat of a parallel to Rody, no matter how much effort, money, and time he puts in, his work will never be reciprocated because he's doing this all for himself to feel satisfied.
Of course, Rody is not some murderer who cooks his victims into a loin, but he's desperate for a girlfriend or possibly somebody in his life, I'd imagine trying to go into college, flunking, and having nobody while struggling for money gets very lonely that you cling all parts of your self worth onto one person.
For Vince's case, whatever Incident happened deprived a chef of his taste, and as a chef that's pretty detrimental that each time you cook and have somebody taste your food, it doesnt taste of love, having to perfect it and still not taste like anything. He tried making the perfect meal for his biggest critic, jumping to the point where he would make "something he'd think he would enjoy". Trying to figure out how to make his food have more success, rather than looking at himself. He can't follow criticism because he never points out his own issues but blames it on the waiters, chefs, and the food.
They both have an all consuming need of satisfaction, Rody needing the love of another, and Vince, to genuinely feel love/appraisal. Even when Vince is given those endearing notes, he doesn't care about them.
I think this analysis is overviewing some things or underlooking somethings but overall I really enjoyed the direction of this game and the writing of the characters. For moments with Vince and Rody, you could feel some sense of care with Vince, only for it to be coldly taken away with the next sentence he has.
I think a really important thing to consider for vince if it really was an intention on the creators parts to make him gay is that the story takes place in the 60s at a time where being out would be a death sentence, Vince has no outlet for whatever emotions he has for Rody if that is indeed the direction of their relationship. That coupled with possible self loathing for having feelings that fall outside the norm may have manifested in a desire to eat Rody as the only way vince can really express his "love" Your analysis is greatly worded by the way

Since Vince can't feel taste & is also written as a "sociopath", he might just think: "Well the recipes are the only thing I can go with, and they're all objectively flawless since I'm a perfectionist... Yet people say it lacks an abstract emotion created by chemicals in the body??? They're full of sh*t." Honestly the game leaves you wanting more in relation to the characters because there are a lot of open ends that aren't specifically answered even when you get all of the endings. I really like the idea of this game and the way mechanics work. I kind of would like to see an ending where it matters if you actually talked to Vince or not during the first few days. Sure, you get more background on him and character building dialogue, but considering time still ticks down as this happens, it kind of feels urgent and could potentially be glossed over by some players.

Yeah I played the game myself before watching this and while I LOVED the game but they brought up a lot of topics that they never fully explained. Although I'm gonna assume this was intentional and they are going to update the game and give us more content. Until then I'm left feeling mostly unfulfilled it's almost like they just gave us the appetizers to keep us around long enough for them to finish preparing the rest of the meal, at least I'm hoping that's what's happening.

I've seen other comments pointing at the incongruence between the ending reflecting on how Manon still loved Rody (her ghost hauting him aludes to it too) and how Vince said she didn't even mentioned him also how it made no sense for Vince to try to "cook with love" by giving Rody food made with the love of his life, so my theory is two things: either Vince, after Rody begged him to be able to work for him and he knowing he was desperately in love with the girl he was seeing now (being Manon), decided to make an experiment to try to replicate the "taste of love" by murdering Manon and feeding her to him, to take his cooking to another level OR the second theory I believe makes more sense is that Vince tried to make Rody HIS food.

He cared about Rody when he got whet in the rain, when Vince slapped him was to make him snap out of worrying too much (maybe so he didn’t pay attention to the corpse on the bag), then he immediately was worried about his cut finger, we can’t get fired even when we screw up even big time like the in news paper in his office said; when he invited us to the party I firmly believe that we were a guess because the party was over but Vince didn’t throw us out until the last second unlike all the other guests making the excuse that “something came up” I think Vince just told them to leave. He lied about Manon not mentioning him when they where dating probably out of jealousy, even when Rody was late he didn’t fire us, he is very harsh with everyone else in the bistro except Rody even when he stepped his boundaries like not calling him chef or not attending clients and talking with him. So I think Vince has an obsessive crush on Rody that’s why he ripped off his ear thinking he was “ready” after eating the dishes he made for him. Vince though he would have a sense of taste for Rody specifically and lets be honest the theme of the game is that the guy has no taste on food, furniture, interior design or men.
And another theory not tied to this is that Rudy's parents are dead that's why he dropped out of college and it's a fuzzy memory for him, he's depressed as the state of the house indicates, and has codependency issues as shown by his obsession with Manon
Honestly I was under the impression that those love letters in the trash were from Vince to Rody. I mean why would Manon send a bunch of love letters to Vince if they were already dating? (presumably)
Yeah maybe Vince has some other issues besides the lack of taste? He seems very antisocial / introverted and so if he was trying to connect with Rody maybe it just came off the wrong way, like him inviting Rody over only to make him work when he really just wanted to invite him over (Vince also never interacted with anyone at the dinner party), or him reacting to Rody dropping the trash in such a harsh way
I feel like Vince didn't like how his guests treated Rody which is why he dismissed them so early. But he's also a huge hypocrite as he also treats him like shit, yet at the same time it's very clear he has an unhealthy crush on him. He's also very indirect with how he expresses his emotions and it's hard to tell if and when he's lying or not.
I think that Manon still loved Rody because she was still wearing the locket with Rody's picture inside but was trying to move on from him and build a relationship with Vincent (hence the love letters). Vince, being manipulative and opportunistic, took advantage of the situation after meeting Rody and considering his experiment. I also agree about Vince wanting to make Rody his food and thought that perhaps the notes he scribbled next to the commentary about the waitstaff were also recipe ideas, similiar to what he was writing beside the critic reviews. He scribbled them out after Rody asked if the paper mentioned him, perhaps as a way of not getting caught. He also peeps into the restaurant from the hole in his office to learn how the customers truly feel about his food and to watch Rody.

I feel like Rodys love language is giving gifts and big jesters. But as Manon pointed out, he does it despite of any circumstances. So at some point she is waching someone she cares about dig themselves a hole because of her. I also like Manon.
In my opinion she's sus af, she broke it off with him a week before she went on to another guy immediately after- Most people in a relationship who want out do this kind of stuff, or even were cheating beforehand (I've read too many stories in real life where people do this, you'd be surprised how often it is). Also I feel a lot is missing here, why did Rody have a need to do all these things for her? She very well could have played hard to get or just got bored and wasn't a supportive or affectionate partner. Or there is some past trauma here- Either way I think Manon wasn't so great either. It may sound noble what she told him, but her actions realistically were very questionable.

Vince said he lost his sense of taste at a young age and I expected there to be a story behind how it happened, so I'm a little disappointed there wasn't.
At one point he could enjoy food so that might be the main reason why he's so desperate to taste something again. Might explain why he ate Rody's ear even though he says he's not a cannibal - the man wants some flavor in his life, dang it!
Its also confirmed that the reason his favorite food is just raw lemons is cuz it leaves a sensation that vaguely reminds him of taste :(

The peep hole in the restaurant is interesting to me because it's there at the start of the game, implying Vincent made it since the restaurant began to spy on the guests and learn their opinions on the food. I talk about it a bit in my review but I also iked how the bistrós name means "the mouth of Saturn" and references the painting by Goya in Vincent’s room. His paintings suggest a lot in the game.
I mean both Vince and Saturn do engage in cannibalism albeit for very different reasons.

I found this one so interesting because I was passively watching it while I worked on my college paper. An when we got to the ending scene where the chief was answering your question. I thought the big twist was gonna be something like "I stalked up so when she broke up with you I cooked her just for you." (sorry the art gives off mad m/m ship energy lmao.)
But no- the guy legit saw this girl. An how she was in love with a guy, and met the ex-boyfriend. An killed her to feed her to the boyfriend. Which actually connects to his problem at hand "You always cool for yourself and it tastes superficial." I wonder if for once because Vincent cooks for someone else. An truly wanted it to be good, would it have turned out actually good?
Also, I noticed they both said things that deeply hurt the other at the end.
Vincent told Rody: You're exhausting.
Rody: Your food tastes bad and you'll never be happy.
You even get a hint to the ending. "If there's a fire wouldn't that be bad? You lose everything." an Vincent did.
They mirrored each other perfectly. What makes the when game even funnier? Is that all of the ideas you get about Vincent are incorrect. He's not a cannibal, he doesn't even kill people. Except for this one time if anything, if left alive he could have become a cannibal killer. But no, the guy that disappeared he was just fired. Vincent was just an intense dude.
Finally, I do feel bad for Rody. I believe everything Manon said to him. He wasn't ready to be in a relationship. She probably would have never spoken to him again after.
Yea, Vince is kinda interesting to me. People in the comments are saying the devs confirmed he is gay and one of them said he had a crush on rody. Now that holds as much weight as a pinch of salt on the beach but it makes his decisions even weirder if that's true. I'm still so confused why he cooked Manon.
Why commit murder and try to force someone to commit cannibalism? Someone who clearly doesn't like Vince's cooking and seems to just barely tolerate him. Vince admitted himself he had no desire to eat people or serve them in his restaurant. He barely spoke to the kid. Knew him for less than a week. Why suddenly become a crazed murderer over one guy?
Maybe it's the rejection? He kept bringing up how people thought his food was superficial. Maybe he projected all of his past rejections onto Rody? Like "Here bitch, is your girlfriend enough love for you?!" Type sentiment.
Although if he's gay and has a crush on Rody I understand killing Manon(not like it's ok obviously lol), but again why feed her to Rody? Killing her so Vince has Rody all to himself is pretty average for psycho characters, but wouldn't he resent that they share a level of intimacy he couldn't get? That's also pretty common with cannibalistic characters, viewing eating someone as "intimate"(🤢).
Maybe it's just the power and control. He did assume Rody was quitting and ergo leaving his life. Maybe he didn't like the fact that he couldn't control Rody staying or leaving at his command.

Also, despite the fact that Vince was a psycho, I really liked the banter and rapport the two were building with each other through the dialogues. I think they could’ve been friends, like in a cat & dog, Andy & April from Parks & Rec sort-of way.

Maybe Rody is a bit too clingy to Manon in a way that makes Manon uncomfortable. He spent alot of the money he earned just to please Manon lavishly, even though Manon had said that she doesn't want to see him work himself to death just for it (she's fine with just a normal date or relationship building, not expensive pretty dates and gifts). Maybe past relationship issues or trauma affecting Rody in how he views relationships.
I am surprised so many think that Manon was doing something wrong when it's obvious as day that Rody is a horrible boyfriend. Taking on 27 different jobs in 7 years just to make some quick buck to lovebomb someone is a clear sign they don't have their life under control and are obsessive. Nothing about that last message by Manon was cryptic.
My sister had a boyfriend like that. No matter what she did, he’d always say yes. She told him SO many times that he should create some boundaries for himself and she tried to test him, nonetheless he still always said yes and lovebombed her at any point he could. She felt as if he was sacrificing himself for her, and just like Manon, my sister had to make his worst fear come true and break up with him because he could not take care of himself. Really sad. :(

Yeah, I would not want to play Dead Plate just because of that gameplay. To be honest, the entire game looks rather... unfinished? No sprites facing any direction but south, animations being a tad jank, hitboxes for clicking stuff being a tad jank as well.. It just gives off the vibes of "Made in an entire afternoon".

I think it’s heavily implied throughout the game that Vince does like Rody, which leads to the ending of him serving food for him (and the food.. well.)

It's an interesting game, but the story doesn't really make much sense if you think about it.
So, Rody is dating Mamon. Except he's too smothering with love, so she breaks up with him and rebounds with Vince, who has no interest in her. But apparently he has enough interest with her that he hangs around long enough for her to gossip about her loser ex (who she is depicted in the true ending as having broken up with because she cares about him?) And he is so taken by this conversation, that he basically becomes transfixed on the ex EVEN BEFORE MEETING HIM and kills Mamon, hides her in the freezer, and then Rody shows up to work. Because Mamon's been gone for a week and Rody only worked there a few days.
Also he can't taste and wants to taste love by having Rody eat his girlfriend.
Something there doesn't make sense. This also means that all of the buildup. The weird slap, the talks about Rody's drop-out at collage, it didn't mean anything to the story. Because the relationship between Rody and Vince kind of just stops progressing and turns into 'I've been plotting this scheme to have you eat your girlfriend because you loved her, Stranger'. The major event already happened off screen a couple of days ago.
Now, I feel like the story would've made more narrative sense if one of the following happened:
1. The whole thing was a set up from Vince and maybe Mamon to get Rody off of her back by luring him to the restaurant and disposing of him, as Vince is the new boyfriend and Mamon's tired of Rody's clinginess. Maybe even have her not involved and Vince just a yandere.
2. OR have Vince hire on his new fling (Mamon's) ex as a favor, but then have him become so fixated on Rody, and intrigued by his plight, that he then flips sides and kills Mamon so that he can gift her to Rody as a meal. Also Yandere, but in a different way.
That would at least make a stronger connection between the three major characters. And then those moments between Rody and Vince would matter more because Rody is effecting what happens in the end, instead of everything happening before he got there.

Another thing that doesn't make sense is that, if Vince wanted Rody to eat Manon... then why kill Rody in the freezer/no-match/best-served-cold ending then? Vince also had an opportunity to bargain when Rody escaped, since Rody was literally saying "We can talk about this!" Sure, Vince might want to eat Rody afterwards either way, but he didn't even try to get Rody to eat his dish (other than putting it on the counter). (The player could even be given an option to eat or not eat the dish-- if Rody chose to eat it, it means he didn't realize that this dish was made out of Manon. If Rody chose not to eat it, it means Rody suspected/realized the the steak was in fact Manon-- it's not that the ear biting is really necessary for anything either-- all it did was adding a little more shock value and justifying Rody's actions a little more.)
Although, at the same time, I do kind of feel like, it's possible to justify most things in this game if one tries hard enough.
For starters, Manon was either:
1. fully lying about the things she said to Rody-- i.e. caring about him (because it's assumed that the love letters she wrote to Vince were real, and this is the kind of reasoning one might use to look like a good person when breaking up... and this would explain why Manon would tell Vince that Rody is a loser), or;
2. Manon was an incredibly flawed person who did love Rody but also immediately jumped for her next crush-- it IS possible for a person to have feelings for multiple people (in this case, Manon might not have directly called Rody a loser, but it could be what Vince got out of what Manon told him-- or maybe she said that on whim so that she'd seem cooler to Vince-- some people actually do that, putting others down, even their loved ones, to look cool in front of someone they want to impress-- either way this would explain why Manon still had the necklace with the photos of her and Rody).
And for the inconsistency I pointed out-- maybe Vince is just so flawed that he couldn't even bother to try hard enough to get Rody to eat his dish. Like he wanted Rody to eat his dish, but Vince didn't actually _try_ to get Rody to try the dish, instead he just gave up and jumped ahead to trying to murder Rody and to make a dish out of him instead. (The implications is there, that Vince had feelings for Rody, and if Rody wouldn't eat his love, and Vince would just have to eat his own love-- i.e. Rody-- and see if it actually tastes better or not.)
I'm also not exactly sure when Manon was murdered. Someone pointed out that the indentations on Vince's bed seemed to imply that Manon might have been sleeping there? It definitely wouldn't make sense that Vince would murder Manon _before_ he met Rody... Vince could have called Manon to murder her AFTER he has met Rody and realized about his obsession. (Manon could also still purposefully ignore Rody's phone calls until her own death, although, not sure if she has caller ID or not. It would sort of make sense why Rody decided to use a public phone booth in the first ending, to bypass the caller ID...? I actually don't quite know how this works.)
But yeah, this game is quite frustrating to me. It sort of doesn't make sense, and yet, it also feels like it _can_ make sense to me. These logic/reasoning barely passed in my mind, and it makes me wonder if I'm actually right, or if this is all a fluke and I just happened to think up some explanations/justifications that is convincing to myself.
I like your ideas for the story a lot more than the original one. I was also confused about Manon. Does she care about Rody, or does she not? The author doesn't seem to know it either. But it's still an interesting game, and I hope to see more from this developer.
Had to get through the playthrough to really understand the points you were making. Story wise this was a pass for me but at least the gameplay seemed fun.

I’m genuinely hyped Manly finally got ahold of this game! The dev made a few other games: Cold Front (which Manly did play), Elevator Hitch and Eloquent Countenance, which are pretty unique games. Vince and Rody are definitely an interesting pair of characters, not counting the… er, _circumstances_ that played out.
Vince is the classic freak obsessed with his art form. His inability to taste reminds me of a certain character from another game who can't remember faces.
