- Dating and romance scams. One of the most vile and prevalent scams in our world today. They’ve stolen over 200 million dollars from Americans in 2019 alone, and aren’t going away anytime soon. We’re diving into the dating pool right now and are going to show you exactly how these romance scammers gain your trust, deceive you, and rob you of everything they can. And witness a Trilogy Media exclusive testimony from a victim, who fell into a dating scam that turned into a trap of life or death.
These romance scams are not exclusive to any one platform, but today we’re focusing on the popular dating app Plenty of Fish. Headquartered in Vancouver, this app has been around for over 15 years.
I myself have opened a profile on Plenty of Fish. I’m going in as Ryan Benson, 22 year old editor and movie fanatic from Los Angeles. For the sake of this experiment, I have paid for their service of premium features. At no point have I made the first contact. I did not swipe, like or message ANYBODY without them contacting me first. My profile is simply innocent bait. Let’s see who swims my way.

As an older woman I get tons of friend requests from "men" claiming to be handsome widowers. It's really sad how these scammers are all over the place looking prey on lonely people. I just feel sorry for the folks that fall for these scams.
I also get those "friend" requests". They always like to say they couldn't friend me on Facebook so could I message them. I always report them after I say something about how they are probably Nigerian that's parents are brother and sister.
I get what I call green cards proposals, if I talk to talk to them( when I’m bored), I already know they’re a scam and not surprised when they ask for money…then it’s bye bye and block

@@DimitrisDr3am I've seen those as well! Young women with very large breasts claiming to be lonely. Right! That's just as believable as the handsome 60 year old widower wanting to date a frumpy 85 year old widow. Yet....there are people who fall for these.
I get them too I just block them. It's really sad that people so desperately want somebody in their lives that they fall for the ingenuine sweet talk. It's heartbreaking honestly.
I was on a dating site and I contacted by a romance scammer, when he asked me what I do for a living I told him that I work for trilogy media (Wich I don't I just had to make sure it wasn't a scam). And he instantly blocked me. So I thank art and Ashton for helping me without you even know you saved me. I appreciate all the work you do to help us. You saved me Alot of time and money
Oh that's a handy trick. Anyone who's real would probably be super intrigued by that while scammers would run in an instant.
Like me who told ever salesperson who called me "I'm a minor" for years after I turned 20 😂 they were always SO quick to hang up all of a sudden.. bcs they couldn't make up any contracts legally with a minor, sooo..

I seriously hope Dustin realizes that he in fact, is helping other possible victims of romance scams by telling his story so bravely. He, like many, go through so much just to meet someone only to be taken out by these disgusting scammers. Hats off to Trilogy Media as well for sitting with Dustin and getting the info so well and so gently. I also want to say to Dustin, you will be alright in time. You will realize that you have a reason to be here. You are not alone and never will be. @@s_khan8693 The banks are actually not only enablers of this scam, but accessories. Maybe not intentionally but by not doing a lot more to warn customers of the red flags they make it that much easier for these scammers and give the customers no recourse. Not to mention on all the Craigslist scams etc where they take bad counterfeited checks and then hold the customer who deposited it accountable. Yes the customer was gullible and got suckered but the bank is the one you would think would be the experts on counterfeit checks, not your average joe customer.
In short, here is the quote.. "I am a banker who has watched several people lose their entire life savings to romance scams". Maybe if they did more then just "watch" it would actually help prevent this or at least cut way down? If I was a banker or a teller the customer would literally have to physically force me before I would allow them to be scammed like this. Yes, I would try harder just for the sake of humanity.. ya think?
This happened to me about 3 months ago. Instead of panicking and sending the scammers the money or the new laptop that the "father" demanded. I ended up calling the sheriff's department. Truly one of the most stressful moments I've ever had. I feel for this dude.

I get these adds on Facebook like every few weeks their pretty easy to tell. If some hot chick randomly adds you and is trying hard to talk look at her profile. Usually they have zero comments from friends or family and the only people on their friends are older guys

Thank you! This is why I scambait part-time. I heard stories like this, and it broke my heart. Some victims actually succeeded with their attempts because of these monsters. It's horrific. Anything we can all do to hurt these scammers!!! ❤️

He was scammed, became suicidal, tried to take his life then accidentally shot himself where he nearly died, all because some heartless lowlife pretending to like him in order to scam him. But he made it through and shared his experience with us which is why the op's comment is so true, he really is incredible guy and a lot stronger than he thinks he is. He probably helped so many people with this story and video myself included

Obviously the scam was the catalyst for his suicide attempt, but something in this kid's life has deeply traumatized him way before that call.

It's really a warning to scammers that you don't know who you're dealing with, and your attempt to pressure someone into giving you their life savings might trigger suicide instead. Scammers like to tell themselves nobody is being hurt, because westerners are all rich, or insurance will pay them back if they get scammed, but the truth is it can lead to death.

Its not the scammers fault. People need to get over themselves and not take themselves so seriously. People go through real shit in life. Rapes.....divorce that cripples them financially....disease.....loss of job....etc. and still go on with life. Get over yourselves people. Set a goal and do what you have to do to get it and stay busy. Get rid of TV....go out and exercise...walk for an hour or more a day. Set a financial goal and WORK---two three jobs--- to reach it. Keep your mind occupied instead of sitting around feeling sorry for yourself thinking you NEED someone else to be happy. Who would want that in their life anyways? Someone who is miserable and thinks that YOU are the cure. What a joke. You are just going to be a burden to them too once you are over the "lonely" thing and you realize you're STILL miserable.

@@peartfaldo while this has truth to it, not many people grew that way and, instead, grew with attachment issues and codependency tendencies. While it is their responsibility to work on healing that, most people are not even aware of it because most schools and such never speak about self-love and attachment issues and in many countries therapy and stuff is very expensive. So, yes, you can't really expect everyone to know and be aware of this. You can try helping them and teach them, but expecting everyone to know and be aware comes from a place of luck and privilege, in my opinion.

My good female friend got scammed for the last 7 months... she didn’t tell anyone until she waited for him at the airport, ans of course he never showed up.. she is beyond devastated, money is one thing, but having your heart broken is simply cruel 😓
Trust me on this they will pay in the next life. All they want is money and they’re never going to take it with him and they never are going to be loved or what love so hell is where they’re going
@@kathyr.8135 I hope so too 😔. Even after showing her all the undeniable evidence (I found the man he was pretending to be), she wouldn’t stop talking to him. Guess what happened? She told him that a friend found out he’s not who he’s pretending to be and that she has proof and so on, so he “came clean” to her; He’s a Nigerian who did initially try to scam her, but now after all the time they spent getting to know each other (never by phone or video of course) he really fell in love with her!! At this point there’s nothing more I can do. I’ve spent so much time and energy trying to talk her out of it, it’s insane. I could write in novel about this, but among other things, he had her buy a freaking house (thank god it didn’t go through) that he wanted to buy for them (being a millionaire but not having access to his international accounts). Not only he broke her heart but he could’ve had her put in jail! She has 3 young children, it’s beyond me. I’m so upset she doesn’t want to see the reality even after all of this!! They always have a plan B, I despise them with all my soul, and I hope karma gets them.

Dustin you are a brave man for telling this story. You were scammed by low life's that thrive on hurting another person. This is so common and has actually turned out worse in some cases. I'm so glad you didn't leave the world. You telling your story may have saved another person's life.
there was a horrifying case on forensic files where a woman looked for retired cops in chat rooms.. she connected with this retired detective, seduced him, sent him "video tapes" and they did meet once or twice... but alot was online stuff and phone...well she said she was "pregnant" with the guys kid, despite being married and had kids and had a hysterectomy years earlier..she sent the guy a fake ultrasound of their "baby" the poor guy grew to love a baby which did not exist.. she then screwed with his mind saying her husband was into mob stuff, was a Domestic abuser, and caused a miscarriage of the fake baby to get him to kill her husband, which he did... she played on his emotions till he lost it... sharee miller..and she sent him photos of a fake bruised belly saying she was attacked by her husband... and once he knew the truth the detective ended his life... horrible how people like that exist..th-cam.com/video/HvhwywuufMA/w-d-xo.html

This hits way too close to home. I can relate to a lot of this. Thank you for giving Dustin the chance to share his story. I really feel for him and I’m glad he wasn’t as badly injured as he would’ve been as he had “planned”. This story could’ve ended up much worse and to see him find hope and seeing how much strength he really has inside is inspiring. His story, along with the insights of online dating scams show just how many people there are in the world you need to be cautious of. You never know who it is you’re talking to. While those can certainly help… its not a cure for the majority of people. Meds and therapy coupled with healthy lifestyle like regular excising and healthy food can certainly help, but its not a one size fit all. Not angry :)

You have no idea how many people you are helping, saving, just from sharing what you have went through and what your issues are. I'm so proud of you. I wish you the best my friend. Something I'd like to say to you if I could is you are not alone. There are other people out there dealing with the same shit. Finding someone with similar experiences and feelings to talk to is extremely helpful.

Dustin's story just leaves me speechless. My ❤️ goes out to him. It's so sad that we live in the world that we do, where people prey on one another, especially to the point where they end up in Dustin's shoes. For completely different reasons, I have been there and struggled like he has with mental health. I didn't attempt suicide, but I felt like it daily for the longest time. I hope Dustin can continue to stay strong and i want to send major props to him for having the courage to put himself out there like this.

I have a friend who fell for romance scammer and committed suicide because of shame she lost everything from her retirement money, jewelry and life. I wish we have this TH-cam back then 2011 . Please continue to exposed this evil people. I think the person she’s been texting or emailing her is from Nigeria she easily fell for his flowery smooth words not knowing who he really is and the picture he sent is not what he is. Ladies beware his target widows and longing for love.

It’s not like the scammers are using their own pictures. They use different pictures with different victims so even if they get busted they’ll just use different pictures on a new victim.
I’m really confused what the point of this channel is other than spreading romance scam awareness and providing some comedic relief (not in this video, this is sad but in most of their content).
Seems like they could be using their time and resources in a more productive manner to stop scammers.

I have the impression that the young guy is very smart, intelligent just by the way he talks. He’s eloquent, no mistakes, clear, concise like he’s reading everything but I know he’s not. I think he’s fighting and trying so hard. I genuinely and sincerely hope he wins. I wish the very best for him, hope he’s getting the professional help he deserves and needs and has the love and support from family and friends that he can rely on.

Most of us just pay the "$400" for some type of service or membership and don't ask questions, sometimes it's because our busy days and we want to move on and get back to our lives and work 😮. Not realizing we are paying for something we don't even use or had signed up for, yet each month we see that on our bank statement, or we just simply miss between all the bills we pay. You are doing a good work and promote awareness for us to open our eyes and do our dodiliagence

I really, REALLY hope Kayla is watching this video, and perhaps realizes what she's doing to people. Thank you guys for this, as it's horrible when I hear of these things happening, and it definitely needs to be more publicly known, so that people are not sucked into these scams as well.
Maybe, but I have a feeling if she is watching, it’s so she can figure out what mistakes she made so that she won’t be caught so easily again. Scammers are the least self-reflective people on the planet, I think. To do stuff like that, you have to really have a damaged sense of morals, or a complete lack of it.

These scams not only pull at purse strings but also, worse, heart strings. I don't have the words to describe how much I hate these,
I was robbed by a romance scammer last year. I lost a lot of money. But it really hurt me emotionally and mentally. I loved this guy so much. I don't know how, but they are so good at what they do. I know the signs now but had no idea of romance scams before this encounter.

Same thing happened to me last year also but god picked me up and lifted me so high in the spirit because I was so broken I cried for three months straight when I found out it was a scam. But now I’m super blessed just got baptized yesterday and gave my life back to Jesus because he’s coming back soon and that’s all that matters more than this earthly 💕

They know how to be exactly who you need and exactly what you want. Career criminals prey on people that they know they can manipulate. It's heart breaking and devastating. Sadly, there really isn't a ton of punishment for criminals that scam. As long as there's innocent people with love and trusting hearts, there will always be thousands of people waiting to take advantage.

I questioned a lot of things, yet continued to believe. My credit card fraud division called me and told me I was being scammed. My kids found out and I wouldn't believe them. It's remarkable how vulnerable we can become. Now I trust no one on the internet, unless they will meet me in person so I know they are who they say they are

omg wiccan reading your comment took my breath. let me tell you what happened. my wife passed away in 2016 from stage 4 breast cancer we were together 23 years. about 6 months later i meta girl i fell in love with a girl i met on pof. ended up moving her in with me and my sons and the abuse started, just mental at first, but then physical. at one point she attacked me and calledthe cops afraid one of my kids were gonna call. so when the cops showed up they explained to me shes living thre, if she got a restraining order me and my kids would have to leave the house. so i went and filed against her. but we ended up back together. and from that moment on ive payed fgor everything in her life, she didnt work, i payed rent, bills, food , cigs etc, for a few years, until i was finally dead broke and had nothing, that was almost 4 years ago, and im still trying to get her out of my life. shes emailing me asking for moneu, etc. i finally told her shes a grown woman its time to raise herself. i hoper your son is doing better, i like him was very close to my mom, but she wasnt able to sheild me from this all. all the blessings, t you guys

I'm born and raised in denver and lived on and off in the springs for many years and also lived right near to dublin park. I don't remember hearing about any of this but I do recognize him he seems extremely familiar. Thank God he made it through it though. I got stabbed in my heart and lung (sent brandon an email a while back for all of you and mentioned it in there) and barely survived too so I know it takes a strong man and a good God to make it through something like that. This man is meant to be on this earth

I know how this dude felt. A few years ago I texted a 23 year old girl from POF for a couple days then one day I got a call from a "detective " that said I was talking to an under age girl and said i got pics that i never received. Then went on to say if I pay for her parents labtop she destroyed they'd drop the charges. I called the police and while the police chief was at my house the "detective" called again and the chief told me to ask them for a police ID number. After the detective gave the number the chief laughed and said that's not a real number. Since then I've dedicated myself to wasting scammers time and pissing them off
Hey Dustin! I'm glad you shared your story and I'm not gonna lie, it broke me up a bit. As someone that also suffers from varying forms of anxiety & depression, all I can say is thank you. I try to take the "you can be upset/sad tomorrow" advice mostly every day. I've had my ups and downs as well but never give up. You're life is worth something. Keep your head up brother!

This young man telling this story… it fills me with such dread and fear. They could’ve killed this young man just by tormenting him like that. Awful, awful.
So thankful for Dustin's life. Depression and anxiety are some of the worst things that happen to someone especially when they come together. From the outside, it might look silly, but only those who have gone through them or those who have heart and human sympathy can understand it takes strength, perseverance and total support from loved ones to overcome. I sincerely hope that Dustin is doing okay and I hope this serves as a reminder to those going through different things today to not lose hope or themselves. It will get better. It won't be easy but soon enough you will look back at these tough times and realise how strong you really have been.
Also to the scammer (the ariana one), I heard the language of someone in the background, that was Yoruba, a Nigerian language. It's so sad to see fellow Nigerians at the top of list of scammers today. It's so sad and unfathomable why someone (claiming to be a human being) would put a fellow human through such torture and misery (be it in romantic setting or otherwise). I can't even imagine going through this. I have major anxiety that when I perceive something as a scam I run. I don't even give people the chance because I know if I fall for it, I will break down. But it doesn't mean I'm more careful or wiser. it doesn't even have anything to do with me. But the scammers, the evil people who rejoice at the pain of those who have worked hard for every penny, cent and kobo. I just wonder how these people can go to sleep at night with illegally gotten money floating in their accounts. So, I'm beseeching fellow Nigerians (and every other person with such motif) to please cut it out, put a stop to this and remember that if tables are turned you would hate to be in such position. Work hard, pray, persevere and be hopeful. No money taste better than the one you worked for (legally). I promise.

I went to hospital for a scan 2 years ago and I thought from his accent that the man doing it was Jamaican, butr he said he was Nigerian. He was lovely.
