When I used to work as a bank teller, as soon as we saw someone come in with a FedEx envelope we knew it was most likely a fake check. We actually used to get little bonuses for stopping fraudulent checks from being deposited and sending the check and info to our fraud department.

Cheques look so weird there in the U.S. Apart from the fact cheques are very rarely ever used here or accepted as payment, they are normally from a bank cheque book.
Only one I've ever gotten that was not was from my insurance company which was still on A4 bank stationary and had a perforation to remove cheque from insurance companys printed letterhead.

The average person can't tell a fake check from a counterfeit one. They trust by default that the bank can. Check scams would not even be possible if the banks took more measures to confirm if a check is counterfeit or not before accepting it and leaving their customers responsible with no recourse if they get suckered. I am not blaming the banks, just stating the FACT that the banks can come off as enablers and accessories when they accept a counterfeit check and clear it and then essentially tell their customer to kick rocks when they are stuck footing the bill.
It is refreshing to read that the bank you worked for was actually taking measures. Sadly, most banks don't.. or at least didn't until so many of their customers were defrauded.

This happened to me 2 years ago. When I took the check to the bank, I asked the bank to examine the check. I explained to him about the text I received from a scammer, the decal, etc., and he assured me that it is fake and it has happened before. And he want to keep the check to send it to the fraud department. This is crazy lol

12:53 this check is really strange. the routing number really is for KeyBank National Association, but that bank only operates in Ohio and has no branches in other states. The PO box listed as the branch address is actually the same PO box company as the sender... which means who ever cut that check is doing a weird scam where they are trying to capture any return letters to the real bank. Also, the routing number seems to be the same for all branches in Ohio, which i've never seen. And the cherry on top is that is a printable check. i have used thousands of those bastards. they basically come in blank reams, and you print whatever you want, EXCEPT for the routing, check number, and account number. those are on the ream when you buy it. So someone bought a ream of checks for that bank, then made a fake branch address, then made a fake sending company, then had them both use the same PO box company. That's a whole pile of stupid, but i don't think that's actually check fraud. the branch details don't have to be accurate, only the routing number and account number.
edit: i just saw the close up on the check, and that is for sure a fake check. they use a shitty printer to do a front and back print of what normally goes on those printable checks. maybe there are reams that look like that, but i doubt it. smells like check fraud lol

My dad had this happen on a Craigslist RV scam ("Ray Ferguson" fyi). Unfortunately for them, I've been in banking for years and saw right through the bs. It's exactly like this scam. We ended up calling the fraud department of the bank listed on the check. They perked right up and had us fax them every single text, email, any form of communication, along with the check and envelope. The bank themselves went after this guy hard. Scammers lesson learned. Don't fuck with a banker. 😂

Part of the problem is some people just do not understand how these scams work no matter how hard you try to explain it to them. They end up blaming the wrong party. And by them doing so not only leaves them and others still vulnerable to further scams but can cause damages to the wrong people by hurting their reputations. Sad state of affairs but we live in a world where some people either lack critical thinking skills, or can not distinguish skepticism from reality denial and go through life thinking everyone is out to get them but yet end up trusting those who actually are out to get them. Because the scammers know how to "work" these type of people who seem to be wired back asswards.

  • @SeanWyseman
    @SeanWyseman ปีที่แล้ว +2

I"d have told him that I won't work for a man who's afraid to look me in the eye. He'd have gotten defensive at that point like they all due or they suddenly have to go & "they'll take care of this later". He's a typical scammer. I usually tell them at that point - if I"m not good enough to look you in the face I"m not good enough to be employed by you. Adios buddy this is your last chance. They never do because they know the deal's over at that point. He's lying his face off.
He knows the camera works & he knows how to work it. I had one of these scammers try & screw me over. Once she told me that she was sending me a check for 3000.00 & that I'd need the money to buy gift cards - I was really suspicious at that point because it was then obvious why she refused any other form of money transfer for me to get the 3000.00. Had to be a check. Told her I didn't use checks.
She responded that I'd told her that was able to use checks & was I still prepared to do that or not? I agreed to. But that told me exactly how the same was going to work. I told her that it would take 2 or 3 business days for the checks to clear. She immediately used her bossiest tone so far to tell me that the banks would surely clear them right away. I ignored what she said because I now knew how I was going to get ripped off.
I also knew that I'd never use that money until the check had fully cleared - which it would not. Obviously I realized I could not let myself use funds that had not irrevocably cleared. I did some googling on the name she gave me & it was her real name & it matched the photo on her FB account that she approached me from. She was demanding immediate compliance but I told her I needed to run a security check first & would get back to her as soon as it was completed.
Then I sent her an email with the photo's of her & her significant other having been arrested & spent several years in prison (she must not have been out that long) & a copy of the photo on her profile that proves she's a dirtbag scammer with a criminal record for endangering & abusing the lives of her children which were all taken from them. These scammers also use the info the get from you for identity theft.

Additional scam tips: big companies don't normally need to pay to advertise on people's cars. They put their money into commercials or billboards. Smaller-scale, local businesses might pay you to advertise on your car, but Frito-Lay's sure doesn't need to. (and generally I think the smaller-scale local businesses just advertise on their own cars)

Hey, btw that I think that IP address from the tracking link wasn't actually that of the scammer. As you see it said cache.google.com, which Gmail uses to proxy images using its own servers to protect users' real IP address from being leaked. Stuff that should protect users from scammers might have actually backfired and protected the scammer here.

A friend of mine replied to a craigslist ad about a babysitting job and she got paid in advance. She didn't have a bank account and so I deposited it into my bank not knowing anything about it and it bounced and I ended up owing around $2500. Her mom moved her back to Ohio and left me with repaying it. So I was making monthly payments of like $110 til I paid it all back. The bank explained the scam to me 3 days after I deposited it and withdrew all the money and went negative

I signed up for car decals in 2016 and I was sent put a check. I had direct deposited and went to the bank afterward after it didn't go in bank. I was told it was fraudulent and even sent a picture of the deposit slip. I literally told the guy that was texting me that the bank said it was fraud and they simply blocked me. 🚫 I was not expecting that. I had to pay a fee for depositing this. I hate scammers they think they can get away with it!

It happened to me as well, a friend told me there was an announcement on TV saying they will pay you $400 to $600 a week for the decal announcement. I went searching the same way this lady did. I got a Fed Ex envelope with a check the instructions on how to deposit & what to do after the deposit became very suspicious to me so, I destroyed it & blocked all text messages & email from the scammer.

That check looks just like the one a fake remote work employer sent me when was looking for a second job; I knew the equipment was to be supplied by the employer; their insistence that I use the check they sent me to purchase it was a red flag. I took it to my bank and asked the officer (not the counter, but went into the office) about it. FBI got involved, and I was told unsurprisingly that not only was there no money for the check, but no job there, either.
No real water mark, weird paper for the check, and the addresses were strange, too.
I ran into two more job scams that day. Fortunately I wasn't caught by any of them.

I feel for a very similar scam when I was in my early 20's . Almost exactly the same things happened to me. I deposited the check in my bank. But this check had all the water marks and the heat sensitive color changing strip.
The bank did a 10 day hold on the check but then released the funds. After I realized I was scammed I did a police report and I contacted the FBI. The FBI said it was not a large enough amount for them to get involved. I said if you add everyone else who got scammed it would be millions, and they basically said there was nothing they could do.
My question is why are we responsible to pay back the bank after they did a 10 day hold then released the funds? I thought the banks were insured for stuff like this.
I learned a very valuable lesson.

  • @lovelybutterfly32

Legit wrap companies track your mileage, require you to drive through certain areas ( or highly populated areas) and possibly at certain times. And those are just some of the requirements. This guy didn't mention any of these things. He didn't even send a contract to sign, make sure you knew if you were a 1099 contractor or W-2 employee. He just knows enough to talk about speak sporadically about the paint job, like he really legitimately knows what he's doing, and try to get you to deposit the check. All these things are red flags.

I have this happen to me a few years ago. Luckily, I didn't cash the check, but I did created a fake deposit slip from my bank to show them it was cashed and also had my car photoshopped with the brand wrap applied. I had told them I found a local car wrap company to do it and they were hesitant that their guy would do it, "on the spot at my home/work". After several back and forth texts they eventually stopped replying and sending texts. I've tried tracking them down, but the location seemed to belong to a warehouse that had nothing to do with automobiles and the business number never really picked up either. I had planned to keep the fedex, sticky, and check to give to the local authorities, but eventually didn't as I felt all the effort wouldn't catch this person. Finally threw away the fedex envelope when I loved early this year.

When she says that when the check bounces if you don't have the money in your account for it, does that mean like... if the fake check was for $1000, they put $1000 in my account, it bounces, I haven't used any money in my account so there's still $1500 in there, they withdraw the "money" am I now back to my original $500 or am I actually at -$500 because they didn't withdraw the fake $1000 they gave me that I didn't use, but withdrew real money that I don't have?

Please don't encourage them to send more checks so they can "waste their money on Fedex"
They're not spending anything on fedex. If anything, try to contact those companies and tell them to change their FEDEX login passwords!
