This describes a lot of real world Medical and Psychological issues such as Autism, ADHD, Rhesus incompatibly, Sickle Cell etc In ancient times people didn't have an understanding of human anatomy and Physiology, and Psychology and so some myths like this were born to explain some of these abnormalities.
@ugochukwuanadyk6954 Is the term Autism or Sickle Cell as old as the term Ogbanje? Because if it is Autism etc, then that would mean they knew and we're just finding out. And if we are just finding out, have we reached the end of knowledge on Autism and Sickle cell?
@@TheMedicineShell I should have made myself very clear. Some myths if not all myths were born to explain many things about the natural world which people didn't understand in the past. What you have described about the behaviours of these Ogbanje kids mirrors the behaviours of neurodivergent individuals, Geniuses even people with ADHD and certain conditions like Rhesus incompatibility ( which will cause repeated abortions). A child with Autism back then would have been called an Ogbanje. Back then they didn't know how the human brain works. Similarly to the European myth about Changelings. Great question, a lot of the language around it suggests it 'latches on' to a person's essence and expresses itself through the person. Spirit is similar to an atmosphere in odinani and it can have many things 'orbiting' within it.
@@TheMedicineShell Does it mean a person can choose not to be separated from the spirit? Because you mentioned in the video that an ogbanje can live a long life if they aren't deprived of what they came to enjoy.
@Akpa Cynthia yes a person can keep it, but it's not conducive to a healthy conventional adult life. That decision has to be made with the pros and cons in mind.
