Foam based steering wheels are used in vehicles ranging from Hyundai and Ford to Mercedes. I just recently bought a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter Van that has that type of wheel. With the steering wheel being hit constantly by the sun through the windshield, oils in your hands, constant friction from driving... Steering wheels have a tendency to break down. We show you how you can reseal the foam and stamp in a grain to match the original texture of your wheel!
Steering wheel repair step 1: Inspect the area. Make sure that your steering wheel is foam based before trying this repair method. If it is not foam based.. refer to this video: • DIY | HOW TO: Steering...
Steering wheel repair step 2: Using a micro torch or heat gun, heat the a small portion of the steering wheel. A small enough are that the graining pad will cover. Once the material is hot it will become soft and you can then press in the grain which also reconstitutes the wheel.
Steering wheel repair step 3: Continue your way around the wheel until all of the damaged area is re sealed and textured
Steering wheel repair step 4: Now using a cleaner, wipe down the whole steering wheel to remove any oils, dirt, or other contaminants
Steering wheel repair step 4: Cover all areas to prevent overspray and the light spray even coats to the steering wheel to restore the color. Light coats are preferred so that you do not get runs!

If you find a material with the graining pattern you need, say a piece of leather, you will end up stamping the opposite or 'negative' pattern into the wheel..

You could use a heat gun too. I'm also wondering if I want to remove the grain altogether if I could apply polyfill to it 🤔

Is it a good idea to seal it with like a semi gloss clear or something once youve done the painting step?

I've been wondering for a year what to do with my steering wheel, which, foam as it is, has quite the wear and tear onto it. It was one of the trade-offs I accepted when buying the car as it came overall in a very good condition. I am a bit worried about using a torch or a heat gun, though it may come to this if I don't want to replace it altogether. But my question is, does the spray texture actually add a layer of "material" on the wheel, as tiny as it may be? It's not just another paint job, right?

My steering wheel is a smooth finished steering wheel with no texture but it is sticky at the bottom how can I get rid of that sticky on it
So I gotta do an entire steering wheel, like the whole entire thing is trashed. Can I just skip the texture grain part (I honestly couldn't even match it, since there is absolutely none left), and go right to the spray texture? I just wanna get rid of the sand paper grit that this wheel has.
Additionally, I had tested it with a mini torch, and melted a small section, but holy hell it's sticky, and still has a slight sand paper texture. I assume that's what the Sems fixes.
Will this work on leather wrapped steering wheel.
How long does it last. Like have you used a car for a month after this and not had the paint just come off onto one's hands? I'd think it may b ok for a while but it's the natural oils from peoples hands that start to degrade the foam in the 1st place. It looks very nice after u did it. Im not saying it doesn't work and turn out good it very much was an improvement.
I used to do touch up and similar at dealerships and some thing with the plastic and leather paints like seats would wear off after not that long on a car that was used every day.
These processes kinda r to recondition the vehicle so it can b sold. I'd b interested to know if 6 months later it still looks good.

Good question. Our dealership price typically falls between 45-65 for that. We can usually get it done within 15-20 min
Are there any products for building back up areas of deep wear? I have about a 1/8" deep scar in mine where my ring has worn through the rubber over time.
hmmm... thats a little tricky. you could use a heat cure compound and layer it in then heat it and press to form it. Its not exactly made for that but i could work i think..???

Would restamping work on a 2016 ford fusion? I think it's vinyl wrapped with the stitching on the inner side.
No, that obviously needs a rewrap.
But what are we to do if big chunks of the steering wheel foam cover are gone and the bare metal steering wheel ring/from is exposed?

Hi sorry for the delay... I dont remember which grain it is exactly... You should try this: vinylandhideproducts.com/collections/grain-texture/products/grain-putty-4-pack
You just mix the pieces together and you can make your own grain using what is in your car... Like the center console. You just press this stuff onto and it make a mold that you can then use on the steering wheel!
Does this work with grey foam?
Yes it will but if you heat it too much it will create a burn mark where it get dark. To be safe you can use some acetone on a towel and rub the area. That will level out the foam. Then you can use a heat guy or even a hair dryer to heat it and re stamp it. That will minimize the risk or burn marks... if you still get one you can looks for a grey dye from sem products or even duplicolor to re color the area
Had a customer bring in their ride for a steering wheel replacement. Bit of an odd work order but I've had worse. Hopped in and I thought somebody had been burning army men on the dash or something. Go to grab the wheel and it was like grabbing the surface of the moon. I could not wrap my head around what happened. Upon picking the ride up the customer explained the failed attempt. I really recommend a heat gun. Those torches are so hot, and so focused. I think the average person would have a better chance of success.

How many Miles do steering wheels start to wear on avarage?
It really depends. Ive seen some with as little as 20k... i think all of the hand santizer use lately can cause it to break down a bit earlier
@@imjoshv or rings on fingers aswell mine started to wear on top plus scratches on the gear nob so I'm guessing the previous owner had a ring on his left hand probably a wedding ring

I did the graining and burning step to my steering wheel and it hasn't dried yet. Even though it's been over 24 hours? The rubber feels like tar and wipes off on my fingers. Does this mean it's the wrong material?

@@imjoshv thanks for getting back to me! Yes it was clean and I used leather. I noticed while I was doing it that a sticky black residue was coming off onto my leather. Now there seems to be a layer of that residue left on the steering wheel and it hasn't dried yet and it's been 24 hours. Maybe I can just wipe that residue off and paint it if it's still sticky by tomorrow?
Or should I just paint over it even if it's still sticky?

How about if a steering wheel like that has severe cracks in there is not repairable
If its an older leather streering wheel they can look worse than they actually are. Sometimes just sanding them down and re dyeing them makes a huge difference

Yea you need to be careful when doing it
Not a big deal. Just flash it a few times for a few secs at a time. Press the pad in. If it doesn't take, just means flash it longer.
Taking off that steering wheel to spray it takes no more than 5 minutes.
I think some times it needs specific tools.
Depends if you have an air bag or not.
I was kind of uncomfortable seeing you spray paint inside the car, i would definitely take the steering ffrom the car, tape the emblem and then spray on it, the thing is you dont see paint particles in the air, but they are flying everywhere, they will stick on the windows and other stuff you dont want to. Taking the steering is simple and the best way to do it
Yea i understand that. I cover up some areas and then anything else that lands is so light it actually just wipes away like dust. However, yes taking it off would be the best option
never paint anything inside your car. take the steering wheel out of the car.. or you get paint everywhere (windows, dash, cluster...)
With airbags it’s a total project removing wheels, it be better to just mask better than he did, maybe plastic drop clothes
Good idea to use those patterned swabs to get back the lost parts uniform grain.But these may be hard to get.
The blow torch is a rather dangerous and dicey tool.
It can go badly wrong and scar the steering beyond repair.Utmost caution needed.
I would just sand the steering all over with 1000 grit
clean and dust off the residue
mix any oil with thinner on 1:1 and apply it leave it for 24 hrs to get back the feel in the faux leather
then apply a clear coat water based acrylic finish wait to dry

Hi we do a similar process to what you’re talking about on leather steering wheels. But for the foam wheels we always do it this way. You can actually wipe it down with acetone and then use a heat gun if uncomfortable with the mini torch. For us since we do this all the time the torch is faster and we are use to it... but you are right, you have to be cautious when using it!!
