The March Arnhem suits the mood for this event. It's somber and strong.

As an American, I think it’s fantastic that the British holds on to traditional values.

I see comments like this and have to shake my head. In America there is a tradition of the military NOT marching through our cities and towns. In the old days military parades were mostly a spectacle to show off the power of the King or of the government over the populace. Now these types of military displaces are for civic pride and so on. So the US is holding onto its traditional values by not having military parades. That's why there was so much push back when the President wanted a military parade. In the US they usually only happen after major wars and Inauguration day. There are Veteran's Day parades but usually with old equipment, retirees and so on.

Odin029 Americans don’t have tradition though. You guys are just a mix up of Europeans.

@@lynxyt_194 I had to smile at this comment. It's so wrong I'm not even sure where to begin in refuting it.

@@Odin029 Maybe if your country had to fight for your lives in 2 world wars like we did you'd understand more, we are giving thanks to those who died for our freedom. We wear our poppies with pride for our Military then and for our young service men and women who have lost their lives in recent conflicts.

@@alisonsmith4801 I'm not really sure what WW1 has to do with any of this. The Brits were marching soldiers through towns hundreds of years before the 20th century and the US wasn't marching its standing army through cities since it's founding. WW1 didn't stop the Brits from having military parades and didn't make the US start having them (except for the victory parades of course.)

From U.K. It’s hard to explain to anyone outside the U.K. just what a traumatic event WW1 was. Almost every family was left in grief. The village I grow up in lost all its young men bar one on the same day. I,m old enough to remember the survivors with horrific injuries including blind granddad. I can remember aunts unmarried because of the lack of men. That war cast a long shadow and we feel it to this day. As for the soldiers it must be remembered that Britain has always maintained a very small professional army to prevent it from becoming a treat at home. This type of ceremony helps build professionalism. It’s long been shown that those soldiers with the most ceremonial tend to proform best in battle.

I have a question: Why does his drill movements differ (ever so slightly) from the others? Also, the Drum Major's headdress- what's the story behind that?

what is going on with that drum major at 05.43 . the second movement of the mace to call halt should not be so extreme . looks like he wants to launch the thing . Drum majors should be made to watch footage of Drum major Stephen Ward CG as part of their instruction , its getting ridiculous .

    • @supernutkin5122

Quite right "Louislungbubble" (unusual moniker, as goofy as mine, probably) Yes, all Drum Majors should watch footage of Drum Major Stephen Ward, the famous and immaculate Coldstream Guards Senior Drum Major of the Guards Division during the late 1980's / early 1990's …… HE WAS PROFESSIONAL AND SUPERB. THE BEST, EVER.
He was never fidgeting about when stood to attention. He knew he was "on parade" and treated each occasion WHENEVER he was in front of the band with true commitment and dedication. A more professional Drum Major you will never find !
