Super late to this, but for anyone wanting more explanations as to how that works :
The first steps are useful to find an actual tone that is close to middle gray to pick the white balance off of. When you add the middle gray layer and set it to difference, everything that is closest to middle gray will look dark, and anything that is different to middle gray will be made brighter. Then thresholding is used to find the darkest areas only, meaning the closest to middle gray in the original image. Once you have found an area like this, you know it is pretty close to middle gray in the original image so using the middle gray white balance tool there should produce the desired correction

You may not realize how valuable this method is to that tiny group of photographers who are color blind. The beauty of your solution is that it is 100% mechanical. Worked for me every time.

I sifted through many videos that I didn't find profitable. In fact, they often made the color balance worse! For the first time in my Photoshop experience, I've found the video that provides exactly what it promises. Thank you!

I know this comment is 5 years old, but this is the best tutorial I have seen about Photoshop. I love that you tell us exactly how to display each tool that you are using. So many tutorials assume you already know, for example, that "i" is for eyedropper (I didn't). And you've just made my life soooooo much easier! Thank you!

EXCELLENT JOB, Chris ! You are a natural-born teacher. It is also a pleasure to listen to you, because you speak in complete sentences (subject + verb + object) and you do not say "uh" and "gonna." Thank you again, Good Sir !

This old tutorial helped me a lot. My photo has a terrible red miscolouring and the person on it is overexposed at the same time. I had already come far with colour balance. The background looks perfect. but I couldn't help with the white.
I used your tutorial on the original picture and put the layer into the one document with my other adjustment layers. I put your curves layer to multiply and it looks great Thanks.

very helpful. i think a tip that might help someone who was having trouble like i did, is to be aware of what colors are relatively close to grey already. although i used the threshold and slid to around about the 20's, some of the blackened areas were directed towards my skin (tan) so when selected, it referenced a wrong grey point. i looked at the original layer and saw which blackened area of the threshhold was already near grey then selected that as my dropper point.

I had some doubts at first since the eye dropper of Lightroom produces very good results and is very easy to use in comparision to photoshop. It also makes editing very comfortable. But you convinced me. There are so many ways to fix WB in Photoshop, and I have to say, yours is the easiest, most accurate and intuitive I've seen so far.
