Be good to convert the Class 379 Electrostars to BEMU. As Greater Anglia are replacing the Class 379s with the Class 720s. And the Class 379 to have batteries fitted for shorter journeys.
And even possibly some of the Southern Class 377s could also have batteries fitted to operate on the Uckfield Line and Marshlink Line services.

I think it's time for EMUs to receive batteries rather than buying bi modes.

does this finally mean we can see electric trains on traditionally diesel only lines? It would be nice to see the whole network go electric eventually.

various tests are ongoing, nothing changes quickly on the railway! Expect to see some form of hybrid powered train in everyday use somewhere in the UK in the next few years though.

The Austrian railways and NZ have both ordered electric/battery trains to be operational in 2019. Japan has been using them for about 4-5 years. Bi-modal where the train is battery and electric pickup is the future, *not burning filthy diesel fuel.* The great thing about battery trains is that when the battery pack needs replacing a newer cheap pack with about x3 or x4 the range would be fitted as advances are introduced.
Also, the used batteries can be used for electricity grid battery storage used for peak times. There is still a lot of use left in vehicle batteries. Germany is using used Smart Car batteries in a grid storage battery bank. A grid storage battery bank has been commissioned in Barrow - using new batteries. This saves building dams at the tops of mountains and having expensive peak time power stations on stand by.
Having electrified track at stations and where track runs up hills, makes matters better in preserving the energy in the battery, assisting loads, and acceleration from stations. And of course kinetic braking regeneration using supercapacitors.
All obvious, except to those in charge, who have ordered bi-modal electric/diesel trains.

@@johnburns4017 I heard that if DMUs are banned then they might convert the newer ones like the 195s to battery power.

@@calldfwp2230 Hydrogen fuel cells and battery will make matters far easier. The likes of Merseyrail and Tyne & Wear metro can be extended onto unelectrified track..

Look! This train has no pantograph! It is a battery powered class 379!
    me: I love this train!
Look! This train has no pantograph! It is a DMU class 142/1 pacer!

testing battery power, probably on OHLE sections because they already have pantographs and just for backup if something goes wrong
