  • Possibly the most unbelievable scene I have ever witnessed on the British Railways.
    I recieved a phone call from Jim to tell me about this working, an extremely quick run to Bath Spa station lead to this absolutely amazing site!
    43160+43188 failed working 1A27 1710 Weston Super Mare - Paddington, the train failed in Saltford, completely losing all power from 43160, the train couldn't move.
    Unbelievably, the train that was utilised to rescue the stranded passengers was Hanson Liveried 59103 working 6C64 Avonmouth-Westbury stone train.
    This unbelievable scene is witnessed with the set departing Bath Spa at 2016, 153 minutes late in the formation of 43160+8 MK3 coaches+43188+59103+15 MRL Stone wagons!!!
    The train was drivable from 43188, so why the set was not sent back to Bristol was anyones guess, but I'm certainly the last to comlain witnessing this outrageous move.
    The 59 pushed the set to Bathampton loop, where the 59 detached the train and continued its way to Westbury, before 43188 leads the set back to SPM depot in Bristol for inspection.
    Chaos, but this is one epic experience.
    Massive thankyou to James Hale for the tip off regarding this working.
    ENJOY!

    I thought I saw things when I saw the other video of this, but christ almighty.! Such a shame that I'm not in Bristol anymore. Good catch Liam and hi-5 to James for giving you the call.!

    59 does not have buckeye coupling so the emergency bar could be fitted between it and the hst power car. Dont normally propel using the bar coupler - just normally haul using it. I imagine the 59 was in the signal section right behind the failed hst so was utilised to propel the train to bath spa where punters were detrained, then pushed the empty hst to bathampton loop. 59 then set its train back and continued to whatley/merehead. then hst could work empty to st phillips marsh with the good south end power car

    Thanks Mate, couldn't believe it myself, even when I was side by side with it! Interesting point about the coupling, the 59 seemed to couple in the normal way it would with any wagon to the Power Car. It wasn't my main priority to check at the time I must admit, so I could be mistaken :$ Glad you enjoyed buddy :)

    The Rear powercar 43188 on Bristol end was okay. It could travel back to Bristol with 188 leading, that's eventually what happened. 43188 hauled the train with 43160 Dead on Rear late in the evening.

    Great footage, wished i'd seen it! I reckon the passengers took other trains to London/Bath/Reading because there isn't a single soul left in that HST

    Cheers Tom :) Well I think it was the only alternative they had! With no spare Trams on SPM, they had to do what they could. Either way, incredible.

    @hstman14 So are you saying the rear power car (bristol end) was ok, the front one had failed so it could go back to bristol with the one power car leading, dragging the whole train with no power car pushing at the other end (the failed one) ?

  • @hstman14
    @hstman14  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    No-one was entirely sure. Was listening to driver, he was talking the panel, saying about losing power, couldn't get anything atall, so just went as far as he could. The train tried powering at Bath again, but there was no go, in the front engine, seemed like a traction motor problem in 43160.

    No probs Ryan, in the description, I mean why not send it back to Bristol with passengers on board. But it was evident that the 59 already had the road behind and presumably was unsafe to reverse that to Bristol. When it arrived at Bathampton, the 59 could be removed and the train could make it's way safely to Bristol SPM.

    Definately for the West Country.
    Well it's interesting you say that, all the other services seemed to just pass on the Down line. A HST set could attach to this, but a 158 couldn't. A freight engine, such as a 59 can, it seises to amaze me as to why they didn't just take the setback to Bristol with 43188, as there was nothing wrong with that end?! Unless the 59 was unable to do a reversal move behind the HST. Who knows?

    That 59 didn’t look as if it was hooked up to the HST draw bar wasn’t much space between.
    Both power cars were on idle I probably some kind of electrical fault.
    Good catch though well done 👍

    • @hstman14
      @hstman14  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 59 and HST were coupled together with the short draw bar.
      I do believe it was an electrical fault, but cant remember the full details now.

    What do you mean, what was working this? :-S The train terminated at Bath Spa 136 Late. They did send it back to Bristol, it ran as 5Z27 2019 Bathampton Loop-SPM. There is always a spare line at SPM on a daily basis, incase of something like this happening.

  • @hstman14
    @hstman14  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Both powercars lost all power supply.

  • @FGW180101
    @FGW180101 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was it still in Passenger use? And they wouldn't have sent it back to Bristol if the set was going to end its day at Old Oak, because that would mess up the balancing move and there would be too many sets at SPM and not enough at OOC :)

    @hstman14 Sorry about the first post; it was before I read the description :S You said why didnt they send it back to Bristol? But now you said it went back to Bristol - now im lost :S
