I couldn't have done it without your videos Mr Salles, you distilled what I've always found to be a daunting subject into manageable bitesize chunks and I'm sure it's all the complex and original ideas which you shared with us that got me my grades. I honestly learnt more through binging your videos the week before the exam than I did during the whole GCSE course. • @alastairaiken2987
    @alastairaiken2987 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    Sir, while your videos have been very helpful, I think you are placing too much faith in what students did over lockdown. Yes, many students did spend more time watching more educational content, but how much of that information did they retain? Very little. In fact, lockdown caused a "memory fog" due to the social isolation people had to endure. They watched videos because they were bored, and if you're doing something because you're bored, you're not going to remember it. For instance, if you scroll through TikTok (which many students do), you're not going to remember what videos you've just watched. Because you did it out of boredom, not out of passion.
    Furthermore, much of the educational videos people watched over lockdown had very little to do with GCSEs. They watched "edutainment" videos because they were interesting. Channels like Vsauce, Tom Scott, Numberphile, not channels like Freesciencelessons. GCSEs are much more about exam technique than about actual content, especially in English. And if they did watch channels like Freesciencelessons, it was probably because their schools set those videos to them as tasks.
    Anyway, thank you sir for all the videos you've made; they have helped me a lot. This is definitely the only video of yours I did not agree with.

      Absolutely agree, I learnt so little over lockdown, it had such a huge impact on my learning. I preferred working at home in my own space but the leaning resources just weren't there plus there was no support system for ensuring your understanding was truly cemented/ ask for help when stuck, so many of the mistakes that I've been making are actually from habits, created by lockdown because I haven't been told what the right way of doing smthn is/ correct method or answers

    • @thedeltastrat
      @thedeltastrat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with most of what you say Alastair, but I would counter that with that some students really did learn out of passion for the subjects they love during lockdown. For example, I love computer science and during lockdown I had so much time to do all these extra coding projects and do online courses etc that by the end of year 8 I knew all of the programming content for GCSE computer science. For the next 3 years I just focused on theory, and worked on a couple big python projects in class when programming lessons were on. If it were not for lockdown, I would've learnt programming at the same pace as the rest of my class and would not have had any where near as much experience as I do now.

      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish Yes, what helped was watching your videos, listening to my teacher, and then writing essays. I would then get my teacher to mark and give me feedback. It was important for me to focus on my specific errors, like if it was improved, my language analysis, or sprinkle. In more context, those sorts of subtle and specific improvements. Another thing is reading the texts and just having good knowledge of quotes and understanding
      The texts we'll but that should be somewhat obvious. But the main problem I couldn't overcome in exams was consistency. I would write a level 2 paragraph, then write a brilliant L6 paragraph. I only had one essay that was L5 and 6 all the way through, and for me, that was what I struggled most with in literature. I hope this is somewhat helpful. But again, thanks for your help. @@MrSallesTeachesEnglishApologies for not seeing your reply sooner! But i’d definitely say that 1. your predictions were very insightful and gave me more confidence before going into the exam 2. The In depth world level analyses and making sure to write a lot about a little, I also made sure to provide alternative explanations for the quotes and made sure to have a range of quote explosions ( that suited multiple themes/ characters) prepared beforehand! Thirdly,and most importantly , the enthusiasm that you show in your videos and your work definitely made it 100x more enjoyable to watch and made me enjoy revising to be honest! This is a wide ranging comment but I want to make it anway.
    I am a parent who is not from England. This was the first time I was working with one of my children on GCSEs. Of course my child was focused and attentive throughout these school years, even with the setbacks of Covid and the mental health struggles that many families suffered through it all, but I wanted to support my child in any and all ways possible in their academic pursuits so I also looked at what many students turned to for support (which in the 21st Century is rightfully some online support as well as their teachers, past papers, and fellow students).
    Therefore, I would like to thank ALL of their faculty, support staff, administration team as well as the following content creators in helping our students this year through GCSEs, A-Levels, BTechs, and the new T-Levels too:
    Mr Salles
    Mr Bruff
    Mr Everything English
    Primrose Kitten
    Seneca Science
    Cognito
    Freesciencelessons
    YT Science
    YT Maths
    Maths Tutor
    Physics Online
    GCSE Raps
    Dr de Bruin
    Science Quizes (and all the other quiz Shorts makers)
    Science with Hazel
    Your Science Teacher
    And all others who contributed to:
    Geography
    History
    Design Tech
    RE
    Food Tech
    MFL - French, German, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, Latin, Greek
    and all other subjects I may have missed
    As a parent, I am extremely grateful for the enormous time, effort, energy and focus you provided our children, on your own behalf, simply because you wish to support them. I had some good memories and laughs watching your creations as well.
    Thank you. ❤

      This is a wonderful comment. It doesn’t surprise me that you are not from England. English families value education less. I’ve just returned from Vietnam where the average monthly wage is $330, yet parents still pay for their children to go to school. We could be so much more than we are!

      - I would definitely recommend researching unique facts for AO3 context. For example, when My Last Duchess came up, I remembered researching that “Neptune” means “Nuptus” meaning “covering”, which I think won me a few more marks.
      - A really underrated revision method is listening to revision songs. For example, this one by Mr Bruff (th-cam.com/video/ZZ7UbyUkodc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bTXzgo__YeEeSLSY ) helped me a lot to memorise quotes. It really gets stuck in your head 😂

    Hello Mr Salles! Thank you so much for these videos - especially with paper 2 they were an absolute lifesaver! I am very pleased to say I dropped 4 marks in paper 2, and 10 marks in paper 1 English Language!!! I can't thank you enough 🙂

    I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! I got an 8 in both lit and lang, after only ever getting 4s in my mocks (I struggled a lot with timing and not writing much in case I got it wrong) and I watched so many of your videos and they honestly SAVED ME . I couldn't have done it without you so thank you so very much!

      Well done on your hard work. That’s brilliant! I want to make a video on how students improved. Would you share your top tips?

    • @LolaBint-Savage
      @LolaBint-Savage ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course!
      1. For me, I would always spend a lot of time on my homework or school work which actually didn't help as I could write a really good answer (but in like 1.5 hours for a 15 marker and even sometimes only a 6 marker) but when it came to the mocks or tests, I ALWAYS ran out of time. So my teacher made me answer questions for English language but I was only allowed to spend the recommended time on it,. This really helped me to write still quality answers but in a short time. Even though they wouldn't have been top quality, they were still good enough to get high marks. It helped me not spend too long agonising over how to word it and even made it come to me more naturally.
      2. I found it useful looking at examiners' notes and looking at students' work and why they got top marks and why some didn't so I could make sure I included all the right things! This was really really useful, I think this helped me most as unfortunately, I couldn't watch all your videos for language as I did Edexel so I found the best way to know how to answer the questions was from the examiners themselves as different people would say different things.
      3. For English literature, my cousin would give me a question and then I would come up with my into (I would have a set frame but would change it depending on the question), and then three points and plan it with her, and then keep doing that with different questions as I often found it tricky to come up with points so that helped.
      4. For lit, I watched your videos and this is what made me improve the most as for my mocks, in November, I hadn't discovered your channel to revise from, but since I watched your videos I noticed myself improving in lit a lot- I knew what to write and what the examiners were looking for thanks to your videos! I practiced a lot of essays with the ideas in your videos, and when it came to the real thing, because I had already written essays, I found it much easier to know what to write as I could remember what I said in the practice essays- so I guess just lots of practice essays and remembering the ideas and purpose of the texts.
      5. Another little thing I did to improve was I would read through articles from the style magazine and pick out little phrases that I liked to include in my writing. (This isn't a big thing but it made me feel a bit more prepared!)
      I hope this helps with your video, and thank you again! @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish

    Thank you, Mr Salles, for all the time and effort you put into your English videos and revision guides. They helped me secure a grade 9 in both Literature (157/160) and Language (wasn't given the mark on my results sheet). I know this donation isn't much, but hopefully you can buy a week's worth of coffee with it!

      @@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Particularly on question four (paper one) I just ditched paragraph structure and just did point evidence explain a bunch of times... I also started on question 2 which isn't exactly what you said but you did say start wherever is best. Honestly I didn't think it would work because I wrote only about 2 paragraphs but I secured the grade 9 thanks a lot to you sir
