@@Hollow-u8t great depression existed and WWII tensions were building up? Great depression also didn't only affect the US when it's economy crashed, other foreign countries were also affected by it. Thus it did basically make every other country a third world country too.
I guess I was lucky. Born in the Early 60s our dinner consisted of a protein (Steak, Chicken or fish) a vege or salad and a starch. That doesn't include the special Dad meals (he was a good cook) that were always something unusual, like short ribs with sourkraut and barley in a spicy broth, that was awesome! Get back to cooking America, a kitchen is a great place for the family to talk about their day or life in general. Boy, I really digressed there. LOL
Correction: in the 1930’s, they had 5 beans to share among a family of 4 for supper.

As a person from the 1910’s I can confirm that that is what we ate
In the 60s we ate a lot of ham. Roast pork, pork chops, pork sausage, soups with pork (navy bean, pea soup, etc). Vegs were mostly potato ( roasted, mashed, fried, baked in their jackets). Peas, peas and carrots, green beans, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, celery, cabbage (cabbage rolls, coleslaw (vinegertte dressing).
The 70s were inflation years. Lots of meat loaf, casseroles (ground beef, chicken, tuna). And stuffed peppers (ground beef and ground turkey), cabbage rolls, fried chicken, tacos, burritos, crepes or blintzes (cottage cheese or fillings like burritos), baked potatoes with sour cream, chili con carne, soups and stews.
80s were steaks, pizza, spaghetti, lasagne, fish (mahi mahi, etc), stir fry (ground beef or steak or chicken) either lots vegetables. Started eating broccoli, different salads (pasta prima vera, ceasar salad, many new types, hot bacon dressing), shrimp, shish kebab, Korean food (rice and spicy chicken or pork).
90s we had middle eastern foods (kebab, falafel), pita bread, chopped salad, fake crab sushi, soups and stews and lots of food we ate in 80s.
00s, Indian foods, Japanese and Korean foods. Pizza (homemade and restaurant gourmet), vegetarian foods on purpose, steaks and other meats, all kinds vegs.

Those are all lies because it really all depended on what class you were talking about? Because, for a lot of people during many of those times they basically just ate potatoes and bread. Maybe a little bit of meat every once in a while. It really just depended on whether you had access to meat. That's why a lot of people had their own farms and gardens. But the vast majority of people did not have access to meet unless they had a farm and so therefore, so this is obviously coming from a more rich wealthy class. Then, once Spam came out yeah, they probably had a little bit of Spam when TV dinner first started to come out, it actually was not that popular because it wasn't cheap enough for the vast majority of people and then it slowly started to get less expensive. But another reason that the t. V. Dinner was not nearly as readily available to most people is effective. Most people I believe you said it was during the 90s. Most people did not have enough money for that at that time because of how much it was comparative. So wherever you got this from is about 90% of it is from a wealthy standpoint, also fondue that is clearly wealth from a wealthy standpoint, because even today, fondue is expensive. So yeah.
My grandmother fed my grandfather (steak and potatoes guy) a TV dinner once, when TV dinners first came out, and he flat out told her never to spend his hard earned money on one of those things again 🤣

@@a70770 here’s a little history lesson, okay. After ww1, America (prob some other countries too) went into the roaring 20s, but around 1929, things started to go south. In the 30s, we were the Great Depression, which ended in 1939. ww1 started in 1914, and ended in 1918. So therefore, we were not in the Great Depression in the 1910s.

i feel like sloppy joes are gonna be a generational thing. if you grew up with em, your kids will too. my grandmother made em for my dad in the 80's when he was in college. then my dad used to make em all the time saying "these got me through college". little did i know they would end up getting me through college as well and now my kid eats them all the time and he loves them. truly one of the meals of all time
Shoot! When I was in college, I was too poor for ground beef. I lived off ramen and spaghetti with cheap tomato sauce. Sloppy joes would have been a treat! I did however have the meal plan at my dorm freshman year. So 2 meals a day while classes were in session. Pasta and scrambled eggs on school breaks unless my grandma would let me live with her for 2-3 weeks.

My father grew up eating tv dinners so it’s a very nostalgic meal for him. Growing up myself, I remember laying on the floor with him eating TV dinners and watching espn news or something but honestly that’s not important. The important part is that he shared something from his childhood with me and passed on the nostalgia. I can’t wait to have kids of my own someday and hopefully pass it on to them as well.
