I think that Peter was referring to the generation he was addressing, along with any other generations that accepted the fullness of the gospel. The generation he was addressing were certainly not chosen by the world. The world subjected them to tortures, death, and hatred. The generation of Joseph Smith was subjected to a similar treatment. @@NEMOTHEMORMON What do we expect? We have a culture of reading a passage of scripture and thinking how "to liken" it to ourselves. We often liken things out of context. But let us look at what other biblical commentary says on the subject: Elliott's Commentary; A chosen generation.-Better, a chosen, or elect race. As originally the clan of Abraham was selected from among “all the families of the earth” (Amos 3:2), so out of the clan of Abraham after the flesh were these men selected to be a new clan, or race. They are not merely individuals selected one by one and left in isolation, but a tribe consolidated, only the bond henceforth is not merely one of common physical descent. A royal priesthood, an holy nation.-These words are a direct quotation from Exodus 19:6, according to the LXX. version. The Hebrew has “a kingdom of priests,” as in Revelation 1:6 (according to the best reading); which would mean, God’s organised empire, every member of which is a priest. Nor is the thought far different here. The word “royal” does not seem intended to imply that every Christian is a king, or of royal birth (though that, of course, may be shown from elsewhere), but describes his belonging to the King as we might speak of the royal apartments, the royal borough, the royal establishment, or even of the royal servants. The substitution, therefore, of “royal priesthood” for “kingdom of priests” brings out more clearly the personal relation to the Personal King. But if the writer had said” royal priests,” the notion of organisation would have slipped out of sight altogether. By way of compensation, therefore, it is restored in the substitution of “priesthood” (see Note on 1Peter 2:5) instead of “priests.” This, and the next phrase, “an holy (i.e., consecrated) nation,” describe the whole Israelite nation as they stood beneath Mount Sinai. This must be taken into consideration in dealing with the doctrine of the Christian ministry. The sacerdotal office was as common to all Israelites under the Law as it is to all the new Israel under the Gospel. Barnes' Notes on the Bible; But ye are a chosen generation - In contradistinction from those who, by their disobedience, had rejected the Saviour as the foundation of hope. Hi Nemo. I love your videos. I think that your argument is not strong enough in this video. Only Hinckley singles out the generation he was talking to, as the finest. The others only repeat scripture, implying that every generation of faithful believers are a chosen generation. You need more clips where the leaders of the church singles out the specific generation of their time. I don't think it's clear enough from the others as you can interpret them in the way I just did above. I hope this makes sense?
Absolutely, and thanks for pointing this out! It's not a death blow to the church by any means, but it's a good example of the repeated platitudes that church leaders use to make the audience feel special.
You're assuming they are trying to distinguish one generation of church members from another generation of church members. They could also be distinguishing the relatively small number of members of the church in a given time period (generation) from the rest of the world during that same period.. as in "chosen people" or "royal priesthood" or "holy nation" -- which are the other terms that President Monson used, there.. which are also used by the Lord in Exodus, in speaking of his plans for what Israel would become.
the issue I have is that you start off with the assumption that it must apply to the way the world sees or calculates generations, and then you acknowledge that in LDS theology the term generation doesn't really mean a single set of years from one group of parents to the next, but means and era or time period in which a certain time line of events or practices and teachings are being presented and taught. But then you completely ignore that actual LDS theology, and go beck to thinking it must mean the worldly understanding, and how it therefore, must be wrong. we call that a straw man. and the irony is that you even brought up the argument and actual teaching of LDS theology, which is against your straw man, but then ignored the argument without even confronting it, and went back to pushing your straw man.
That's not the case, I explain that in earlier days, the idea was that generation was less literal, but over time it became more closely aligned with the worlds view, you may disagree with that conclusion, which is fine, as this video is more thought exercise than conclusive, but it is no straw man.
@@NEMOTHEMORMON you create a false dichotomy in your analysis though. you are assuming that because the belief was that it meant an entire dispensation that those within that dispensation can't utilize the terms to apply to them specifically. they are a representation of the type of people within that dispensation, which is referred to as the greatest generation. therefore, the idea still can be applied to each group within that dispensation both individually and collectively. these are not mutually exclusive beliefs and ideas, even though you seem to present them as if they are. ultimately it is still a straw man. You just attempt to justify or substantiate the straw man with a false dichotomy.
@@NEMOTHEMORMON I understand the video completely, and by rebutting your straw man and false dichotomy, I am answering your question. you are trying to create a false narrative as a way to engender confusion and confrontation against the orthodox church. However, as I point out in my rebuttal the confusion is in you not in the church teachings, or use of the term chosen generation across what is understood to be several worldly generations. you are attempting to sow discontent within the church in order to get people to question it's validity as the one true church of Christ. but you are having to create straw man arguments, false narratives, and false dichotomies in order to sow that discontent and to posture about your dissention from the leadership of the church. you claim to be a faithful member, but your rhetoric reeks of anti-Mormon ideologies, and debasing and deplorable debate tactics that are disingenuous, and manipulative. Listen, I'm all for honest critique and genuine concern over and research as to the validity and substantiation of the things the leaders say, and openly admit to and point out times when I see things that are not in line with actual doctrine or eternal truth, but you take it to a whole other level of rebellion, and dissention, that is not healthy, nor helpful.
When everyone is chosen, no one is.

Absolutely, and thanks for pointing this out! It's not a death blow to the church by any means, but it's a good example of the repeated platitudes that church leaders use to make the audience feel special.
My thought was always... chosen for WHAT? I assume that it's "chosen to be present for Christ's return". So.....
Oooh! I hadn't thought about that angle!
Wow!! So weird
I know!
They teach for doctrine the commandments of men.
Where is the NEW “revelation” 🙄? Aloha 🌺
A fun time to note that 1 Peter is identified by scholars as not actually written by Peter. Someone wrote it pretending to be him.
That's an interesting perspective on the matter, and could well be their intention, thanks for sharing.
Well that is so bizarre he know he was just bullshiting everybody
Well done Nemo, as always. Church of Lies…
You just don’t understand... generation can mean a lot things
The LDS credibility gap continues to grow. Wonder if he is deceiving for the lord or mammon.
Boosts egos. That's all this rhetoric does.
Just copy paste your speeches! Why not? 😆
the issue I have is that you start off with the assumption that it must apply to the way the world sees or calculates generations, and then you acknowledge that in LDS theology the term generation doesn't really mean a single set of years from one group of parents to the next, but means and era or time period in which a certain time line of events or practices and teachings are being presented and taught.
I believe you are misunderstanding the video, which again is not conclusive but asking a question. I'm grateful for your feedback though, cheers!
🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
I've heard the same load of crap for 50+ years
Are you cross eyed?
