  • Orphans in the 1800's lost their lives when their orphanage burned down. Was the fire an accident or outright murder? And what do we make of the paranormal activity that happens near the site to this day?

      John,
Love the merchandise and am wondering if you would ever consider doing a ‘V’ neck Tee-shirt for all of us who feel strangled by round necks. ( There’s another story for you somewhere in there!).
Absolutely adore your podcasts, I follow on U-tube, I know it’s spelt incorrectly but I’m a Brit. What can I say.
Please keep up the great work.

The real horror in the stories is that children were "unwanted" and treated so cruelly. Every child who comes into the world deserves love and good care. The idea that a child's soul would be wandering and lost as a ghost and not in Heaven is so sad!

My grandpa was put in an orphanage somewhere around 1900, along with his brother and sister, when his mom died. His dad took off and never was heard from again. Gramps bitterly hated his father for the rest of his days; he never talked about what happened at the orphanage but it had to be horrendous. God bless all abandoned children.

This story is heartbreaking. Considering all the abuse these kids had to endure it would be more strange if the spirits of the dead didn't still hang out there. The fact that the owner would rent out his kids as slave labor is the most repulsive. That kind of greed boggles my mind.

As a child in the 1960s I attended Memorial school in Cleveland which during the early 1900s was the site of the old Collingwood school which had a tragic fire that killed well over 100 kids and teachers. There were some kids which was said to have been buried on the school grounds and memorial school which I attended always had certain areas of freezing cold spots and strange noises. I do not know what exists on that sight currently. Maybe still a school. Thanks for another great curious history!

What a sad and twisted story. The words, "an orphanage for 'unwanted' children" haunt me, and send chills down my spine. How sad are those words. What a horrible way to describe the children. I have to admit, I was confused by this story! Were the hand prints on the car real, or was it just part of a fabricated story? It seems that Ohio has lots of Curious History! Very interesting video, well done as usual!

There are lots of car handprint stories around Ohio Kiwi.
Most of them are near a “haunted“ location. Oddly the only way to see them is to sprinkle baby powder on your car to make them appear.
I can tell you that my car had no issues when we visited the site.

As per usual mind blown! My Grandma told me stories of going to play with the orphans at the orphanage. It was behind a huge fence and the kids were never let out. So Grandma and her brother and sister would sneak to the fence and talk or play with them. The nuns would chase them away telling them not to talk to the "fallen angels". Horrible...You never hear much about that orange either...on the outskirts of Oregon City Ore.

The real story is a s depressing as the legend.
Apparently my grandfather and his next younger/only full sister were sent to an orphanage for a while after their father left. From what Mom said, they were only allowed to see each other once a week, and they were somewhere around 5 or 6 at the time, I think. Their mother took them out when she remarried, though I'm not sure that was much better, seeing as how the new husband was abusive. Great-grandma herself was not a nice person, either. (I've never heard Grandpa or Great-Aunt mention it, but that doesn't necessarily mean much.)

Years ago I found a newspaper clipping talk about a unmarked children cemetery in the valley where local farmers and residents would bury their children that passed at birth or within a couple years no headstones were ever placed due to most children didn’t have names or to poor for cemetery burial. It’s said the burial ground is located Just before the bridge in the valley the remains of a old well sits along the road and 50ft off the road in the woods is the site. Over 20 years ago I found the well and beyond that was a clearing in the woods with small mounds and myrtle covering everything. Today their is a path that goes into the woods if you know we’re to look you can see the remains of the old well and the clearing is just about over grown but you can still see depression in the ground the myrtle is still there unfortunately due to flooding the area has change. I wish I could find the article again to back up my story but it’s another legend of Gore Orphanage

It's easy to forget that back in the day, children were either useful or considered a burden. Rich or poor. The wealthy/powerful arranged marriages to further ambitions and the poor sent small children out to work in mines or factories or even sold them as indentured servants unless they were more useful on the farm. My parents never completed primary school because they needed to help support the family. That was back in the 1920/30's in the USA.

When I first had this pop in my suggested videos to the right, I thought it was a different orphanage and that I had misremembered the name. What is it about orphanages that draw the people to it that misuse the children?
This is the one I thought you were describing:
The Fairmount Children's Home was an orphanage located in Alliance, Ohio on 6774 Union Street NE. The main children's home was opened in 1874 following state legislature that allowed counties to joint together in forming children's home districts.

@@CuriousHistoryYT There is still a small cemetary across Union Street that is the home of a number of the orphans. It's a very sad place. Three years ago the smaller building was still standing. Urban legend has the Headmaster being lynched in the basement tied to a railing in the wall when the kids revolted. Not sure how true THAT tale is! I have read a few personal accounts from kids that were there and they weren't pleasant.

Again an excellent video rich with history and mysteries surrounding it. Thank you for sharing this with us. My goodness, Gore Orphanage has had quite a sad history, and often myths rise up from this. Certainly seems the land itself has something to it concerning tragedy with young children. Heartbreaking concerning the treatment of the orphan children by the Sprungers. There was no practice of God’s loving grace and mercy by the Sprungers. All of these tragedies can also leave lasting marks upon the land. It’s a good thing no one can live upon it any longer.
The Sprungers were likely referred to as the spiritual references of Brother and Sister as my guess, but who knows for sure. They are likely first cousins who have the same last name. It was once a common practice to marry first cousins even into the late 1800s, as you are likely aware of, but due to health issues of children born to such couples, especially madness, it became frowned upon, then outlawed in many states. Only a few states allowed first cousins to marry.
As for the Wilber family, such a tragic thing to lose beloved grandchildren. Some people to this day practice setting table places for immediate family who pass away, but my thoughts is it can lead to what happened to Grandma Wilber, she slipped from reality into another world within her mind where her grandchildren still were living. Very heartbreaking. Again thank you for the fascinating history. Very well told.

It's unknown how the fire started but then you go right to the idea that it was started on purpose. This was the 1800s. Heating would be a wood or coal stove. Cooking would be on a wood or coal stove. Lighting would be kerosene lamps. And they were children. Kids still play with matches and, on occasion, burn their homes down. Either way it's horrible that those children burned to death

Truly amazing story one that is most heartbreaking. A child is precious gift and nothing else I have heard stories about this kind of thing going on in orphanage today it's sickening to think that a child goes through this and what must this child be thinking and why it's happening to them very sad

A person has to be a very special kind of evil to mistreat a child, especially an orphaned child. To have had such a poor start in life to start with, only to have their misery multiplied and compounded by the very people who were supposed to tend and care for them. Denying them even the most basic of necessities like food, proper hygiene and decent clothing. I’m sure these people enjoyed the money they received by renting these children out as farm labor though. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the depths of depravity that some humans are capable of. Very sad, heartbreaking in fact. I know those children have long since passed on, but I do hope that they were able to live on and make a better life for themselves after leaving the orphanage.

Funny how the real history got overshadowed by a story that the orphanage burned down with all the children perishing inside.
It's good to hear the real story as terrible as the conditions were for those children. Sadly it was a common practice in by gone years and right up to WWI when UK children were sent to Canada for their own 'safety'. Not all those children ended up in good homes. Also look up the Butter Box Babies (Nova Scotia, Canada) I had a friend that was born there and put up for adoption. Operating from 1928-1947. A very horrific real story.
It sounds like the operators of the orphanage had a bit of a fire bug streak, perhaps collecting the insurance money on their buildings when times got tough for them? Just a thought. That couple could of been siblings or even cousins which was not unusual for the time. I had grandparents from the 1600s in Scotland that were of no relation, yet had the same surname of Nelson. A fairly common name even then.
