  • A relatively simple build to help with easy Green Screen (Chroma Key) that helps with simple headshot style videos in a small 'bedroom' studio.
    As it stands, this system will never replace a quality, professional studio chroma key set up, but it's not intended to.

    After using this setup a couple of times, I wanted to mount the ring light independently of the camera as it was putting stress on the lens and making autofocus struggle. It still works attached to the lens but when altering focus the weight of the light plus the cable seemed to hinder the movement of the lens.
    Also, I never use the blue light, or, I haven't yet and I wonder if I ever will. Eliminating the blue light will obviously make the build cost less and the wiring easier too.

    I have this setup and it WORKS GREAT. But, once I got a Nvidia Broadcast setup with AI background replace, I stopped using it. Nvidia works every bit as good and if I want to use more options, I just replace the background with a picture of a green screen and feed it into OBS and use all the OBS features. Works AMAZING and requires no additional setup whatsoever.

    I wonder if a less DIY, yet still cheap, approach would be effective??...a portable, USB-powered light ring that mounts on laptop or phone. Cover the LEDs with a green photographer's gel (transparent plastic); hole in the middle of gel for camera to peer through.

      I did try a white LED shining through a green gel and didn't get very good results. I guess the intensity was lacking. I'm not sure to be honest.

    I made one of these and it works awesome! I'm wondering how you have prevented your glasses from reflecting the ring light color. I have a green ring in my glasses that shows up in the camera. I can't find an angle where it doesn't happen.

      Glasses are a concern and tricky to deal with. If you're editing your video then you can normally mask out your glasses but if you're streaming then it poses more of an issue.

    Hi.
    Just discovered this.
    Looks great but - I have a couple of questions-
    The green light falls on you as well as the back cloth? It’s in front of you, attached to the camera? So why doesn’t it give you abd your clothes a green tint and consequential keying problems?
    And
    I don’t have any project space for making stuff at the moment. Is anything like this available to buy/modify ?
    Thanks.

    • @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing
      @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The strength of the green light is minimal, it's not bright enough to cast much of a green hue on you unless you're REALLY close to it.
      I don't manufacture the system but there are commercially available ones but they're quite expensive. Check out cvp.com/product/reflecmedia_rm-1201

    How do you provide good white lighting of the subject (you) without affecting green chromakey light?

    • @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing
      @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As you would normally. As long as the white/studio lighting isn't in line with the camera lens (which it normally isn't) you'll be fine.

    I built a very similar setup using the same ring lights. I'm using it for livestreaming in OBS studio (hopefully), but I'm finding that the color almost washes out to white when I turn up the lights. I would expect a brighter green, but instead the camera sees a very very light green. The lighter the green, the harder it is to key out without taking out pieces of me with it. I have to keep the lights on the lowest possible setting and then it's not perfect. So then my question is, how far away is your camera to the screen? I'm in a very small space and my camera is about 6' away from the screen. I'm wondering if I need to rethink my lighting to compensate for the shorter distance...maybe add an extra resistor to dim the light more. Maybe there's some other piece of wisdom I didn't think about...

    • @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing
      @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had the same issue and mine was caused by a source of white light from behind the camera washing out the green. In my case it was a window.
      Drawing the curtain helped me but repositioning your setup could be your solution

      Where did you find the material to do this with?

  • @Matthew_Raymond
    @Matthew_Raymond 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're so close and you don't realize it: You don't need the ring. Just use the display for the teleprompter as the emission source. It's front projection!

    • @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing
      @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that something you've done yourself, Matthew or seen done?

    • @Matthew_Raymond
      @Matthew_Raymond 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Here's The Thing TV Haven't done it yet (though I intend to at the earliest opportunity), but it makes sense. I'll explain...
      First of all, you won't be able to use your teleprompter anyway. The whole point of a teleprompter is to allow the actor to read text from the direction of the camera, so the backdrop will reflect that light back at the camera. You'll have the same problem with a monitor close to, but not in front of, the camera. If it's far enough not to reflect of the backdrop, the audience will notice the angular difference in the actor's gaze. You're basically stuck with cue cards.
      The teleprompter basically works off the same principle as front projection. Both use light that's not bright enough to show on the actor. Both use a 45 degree pane of glass that allows light from the "projector" to be reflected towards the actor as if it came from the camera's position while allowing light from the scene harmlessly pass through to the camera. The only real issue is if the image reflected by the backdrop will be sharp or bright enough. If it lacks sufficient brightness, then it's basically useless, but if it only lacks sharpness, you can use you tablet to create any color of light for the backdrop, not just green or blue. (In fact, someone could theoretically create an app that would use the tablet's camera to determine the perfect key color.)

    • @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing
      @Peter-at-Heres-The-Thing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is an issue but not as big as you might think. As this method is used for relatively static, head and shoulders shots, it'd be easy just to mask the glasses out.

    • @PeterBestel
      @PeterBestel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tim Johnsen The properties of the fabric means the light gets reflected directly back towards the light source so it’s vital that the green light is as close to the camera lens as possible.

      @@PeterBestel I have a DIY teleprompter. It would be valuable for me to know how sensitive the light position is before I build the lights. I would be grateful if you could do a simple test with your existing equipment - shift the position of the LED ring to determine at what point the offset from the camera is too great. Cheers!

    Hi Peter, Great video. I have two questions that hopefully you can answer. 1... Could I use a normal RGB Ring Light (with brightness control) and surround it around my camera. and 2. If so could I use a bigger Ring light around the camera, so I could put a teleprompter in between the ring light....., or does the lights need to be snug around the lens. Thank you

    • @PeterBestel
      @PeterBestel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, you could use an RGB light and I 'think' you can use a larger ring light/teleprompter combo, in fact I've got the bits to make that exact thing but haven't got around to building it.
