Homemade Oak Plywood - Episode 156 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • We're starting on the interior! At least starting with the pieces of the interior. Steve is milling up the stock that is going to become the bilge bands. These will get installed soon, when we get a new crew in to finish the planking.
    In the meantime, he is also making up our very own plywood out of all the oak offcuts from resawing boards for the planking. These pieces of homemade plywood are going to become our bulkheads, and boy are they going to look nice!
    Thank you for watching and as mentioned, today (April 2 2021) is the last day of our tshirt campaign with the Akiva dreaming design. You can buy one of those right here: www.bonfire.co...

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    Vacuum bagging your plywood and any multi-layer curved interior parts works fantastic. Anyone in your area have a wide belt sander. They can be a real timesaver and save a lot work sanding. So happy to see all the parts are coming together so beautifully. Great work on your part and wonderful to ride along. Thank you.

    A tip for edge gluing the panels (from guitars and model airplanes) - Lay two pieces together and run a strip of masking tape along the joint. Then fold the joint open by folding along the tape, add glue, and fold the joint closed. Extra bonus is that the tape side will have no glue seepage.

    At 17:00 - Once you finish practicing gluing wood together for bulkheads, here's enough wood shavings to glue up a dinghy.
    Think about it - make a female mold, slather it with a mixture of epoxy and wood shavings, vacuum bag it til it cures, and (almost) instant boat!

    I wouldn't worry about Titebond III's structural strength - I've been using it for years for projects ranging from instrument repair, furniture building and scarf joints on bend gunwales. It works to glue scarfs on pieces that are later steam bent. I especially like the long open time. It's a great product for your use.

    When thickness planing boards thinner than say 1/2 inch it's really helpful to build a sled for the boards out of something flat like MDF, make it longer than any of the boards, then end flaws will be massively reduced.

    You might consider using lacquer thinner rather than acetone for the wipe downs between epoxy layups. Acetone leaves a very small residue, where as lacquer thinner leaves substantially less residue and evaporates faster.

    I continue to be struck by their attention to detail and work ethic. Just amazing, but understandable when you get the difference between passion and drive. Passion is a strong emotion that comes on fast and leaves the same way. Drive is a strong emotion that takes hold of you and never leaves. It gets you up early in the morning and keeps you at it late at night. It is the force that turns dreams into reality.

    I can't imagine how any plywood bulkheads could possibly add any more stiffness to that beast. Sure she'll creak and groan a bit but that is the whole charm of wooden boats. Your plywood will be the perfect foundation for solid furniture builds. Impressive.

    • @99Etien
      @99Etien 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course plywood would not ad any stiffness. That is why explained, that structural bulkheads would be made much more heavy than this "furniture" bulkheads.

    • @akathesquid5794
      @akathesquid5794 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@99Etien that double oak plywood they made would be a perfect stiffener bulkhead. marine plywood is incredibly strong in the plane axes. they simply don't need it. PS I was agreeing to their decision they didn't need a bulkhead strategy, if my post was unclear :-)

  • @shopshop144
    @shopshop144 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A word of caution/question, plywood is supposed to be balanced, hence the odd number of layers as I'm sure you know. But usually the layers are matched, like 1 with 5, 2 with 4, etc. The concern is a oak/cedar/cedar panel might try to move around on you because the outer layers will take in and give off moisture at different rates. I've made interior panel doors with different types of wood on each side and usually regret do so, even when higher ups require it. Granted doors are different then panels, but-----------

    I am amazed by this whole process. There are so many details and so many tiny projects that have to be done in specific ways and orders before the next project needs attention. When you trimmed all the tree trunks for lodging and hanging knees so long ago, who would have known the time would fly so fast and we are actually beyond when you carved them up and installed! They are beautiful!. It's crazy to think the planking will be done soon and the real inside work can be the focus. Next thing you know she will be faired out and primed and painted. And hardware installed and all the rigging going up. Here's to another year of fascinating progress.

    Use resorcinol glue instead of epoxy for your marine applications, especially structural applications, but for the plywood too. Epoxy has a tendency to de-bond after a period of time, especially with elevated temperatures. But even just thermal expansion and contraction cycles over time will cause parts to separate. Resorcinol is what they use in good marine plywood, and it is used for a reason.
