  • Rs 20,000 Crores. That's the estimated price tag for the grandiose Central Vista Redevelopment project in New Delhi. Lying between India Gate & the Rashtrapati Bhawan, Rajpath - a 3.2 Km stretch in India's capital has long been the power corridor of the country. Now it's all set to get a revamp. Conceived by the Narendra Modi government, the plan intends to build a new parliament, multiple secretariat buildings & new official residences in this area, but urban experts fear the grandiose plan will alter the iconic heritage space.
VISTASCAPE examines the Central Vista Redevelopment plan and finds out why the public knows so little about this multi-crore tax-funded project.

Pride of India? My foot... First time i visited Delhi, I had the opportunity to visit India gate and its surroundings... Was completely in shock to see the state of affairs there... No hygiene... there were algae and fungal growth in the ponds and water fountain areas .. I saw lack of apathy from people who were throwing plastic bottles and covers here and there... added to it the food carts who were seen throwing rubbish there... So much pride??? I was really disappointed to see this happening in the capital city. This project should go ahead.

Indian government is paying nearly 1200crores for private for office space. So making multistair buildings and vacating the rented places is better. 20000 crores is huge but making buildings which can be used for 100years instead of paying rent of same 20000cr. in just 10-12yrs. Is better.

As a former dilliwallah (early 1980s to 2003), I have had a love-hate relationship with Delhi. I have seen the changes the city went through as well as the stagnation. I marvel at the grandeur and tell my friends to visit it.
HOWEVER, I can see the need to build more modern, more secure structures that can keep the government safe if there is a nuclear attack. I'm going to assume that the new structures will have underground facilities, with all the necessary bells and whistles.
I would PREFER it if they can do the SAME UPGRADES to the old parliament building, as well as the other vital areas (North and South blocks?). THAT should be given SERIOUS study.

The concerns with central vista aptly shared.
    - problems with the vision
    - sanctity of the space
    - tendering concerns
    - environmental impact
    - heritage disrespect
    - land grab by the government.
    - opacity in processes
    - unattainable timelines
    - expenditure
Additionally the following stats are alarming to assess the scale.
Approximately 3.3 crore sqft of built up area would be created. That is equal to 24000 cricket stadiums.
This would cause 450 trucks daily carrying construction material into the heart of delhi for the next five years. Think of the pollution and traffic snarls that will cost to the city. To offset the carbon footprint of this scale, one would have to plant 416 sqKm of forests. That is size of cities like Bhubaneswar (422 sqKm), Chennai (426 sqKm) and bigger than Surat(326.5 sqKm) and Pune(331 sqKm).
The water consumption for this project is equivalent to the annual need of 23,000 lakh citizens.

No....none....existing buildings are sturdy and efficient......and closely placed work is done much more efficiently.....if this new infrastructure came to exist....then do not know where the files and all the work will be placed or will it be preserved or dumped....if dumped its information lost....will not be able to retrieve back.....and that is what is scary......i do not know what are they exactly trying to achieve....apart from loss of current functionality of these buildings and displacement of current workforce.....

If you go by with opinion of these so called most Democratic individuals, we shall not get any noteworthy monument for another 70 years. Rightly SC rejected their vicious demand. I am sure Modiji would make another masterpiece by completing this project in his tenure after Rammandir and KashiVishwanath Dham.

I'm amazed with the Critics who are making all pathetic excuses that it should not be built. These are the same people who criticize Government for not doing enough for public and for their safety. Us Indians talk about how beautiful and organized Western countries and their Infrastructure are and when it comes to making India's Infrastructure more better, symmetric & Presentable, people have issues. I'm sure, Government will develop more space for public in other parts of Delhi. You must be glad that this is how the Western Countries approve plans and develop their landscapes. So Please appreciate; accept the changes and Let government do their Job. Thank you !!

How do you calc cost savings for using govt space effectively than renting/ buying more land. They talk environment, etc. but in the end they come to the point right to RIOT. This is the core concern of foreign funded NGOs. Don't miss opportunity to identify sister publication carrying water for foreign interests by simply googling who else is covering this "angle". Finally India needs equivalent of US law requiring agents for foreign govt to register or spend 30 years for each failure to do so. India Today should rename itself to Anti-India Today.
