    I have a Mach 6 (27.5) cause I don't care about going fast and prefer the maneuverability and playfulness ... Also don't ride clips cause I don't care about the extra few seconds. Reasons I ride are to be outside, get a little exercise and have fun, and at least for me, a 27.5 is the better choice given my riding preferences. Hopefully they'll keep making them.

    I just bought my daughter a nicely built Transition Spire. It's a full 29'er, big long bike, 62° ht angle. She's 10 years old and 4'10" and so far is handling the bike great!

    I had held off on 29ers until 2020 when I decided to try the new enduro as my main mountain bike. It seemed to be on average around a second or two faster down some 2-3 minute downhills but felt slower and more numb. And on what I consider to be the most fun type of trails, the ones that have quick left to right, s-turn slappers, it wasnt even faster, sometimes slower, and definitely less fun than 27.5 bikes.
    I asked myself why are 29" wheels "better"? Because they have better roll over? Why is better roll over more desirable? Because it makes for a smoother ride? Do I want a smoother ride? Why do I seek out rough trails only to want the bike to smooth them out for me? Im basically sanitizing every trail for myself, and for what? To maybe get to the bottom 1.5 seconds faster on straighter less fun trails? If roll over is so important, why not ride 36" wheels then?
    I tried the mullet link on the enduro for a while but still felt restricted by the long chainstays and big front wheel. I switched to a full 27.5 transition scout and it feels perfect now on 95% of trails I ride. I would ride a 29er if I was racing on primarily straight and fast trails, or doing huge 40+ mile rides, but for what I like to ride 27.5 is the most fun.

      @-IE_it_yourself ปีที่แล้ว

      well said. sluggish is not what i want to ride. you summed it up perfectly. i would rather 26inch with 3inch tires with a good compound (not gazzis), but i live and ride for work in the city, so mtb is days gone. but i have a cheap 27.5 fully.

    • @SsmAnyfeSt
      @SsmAnyfeSt ปีที่แล้ว

      100% what you just said!!! 🙌 I really like my new smaller frame in mullet mode but still have the long chainstay... would like to try a shorter one, like 440 maybe, instead of 452. I really like how you can switch from 2 different chainstay lenghts on the rocky mountain altitude, I would like to just have the option to try a bit shorter and if I realise I now prefer the longer one, just change it back! Anyway I dont see any cons of a bigger front wheel if the bike is made for that and it dont fuckup your geometry.

  • @CT37BN
    @CT37BN ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Have a 26 and a 29 and what's noticeable is the 26 is more nimble and the bottom bracket/crank is actually higher off the ground than the 29.

    Totally agree with you there bud , broke the frame on my old 27.5 and it was a nightmare just trying to find a modern 27.5 replacement in the UK that would fit the majority of my components without taking a step down in travel or settling on mediocre geometry . Ended up grudgingly settling on mixed wheelsize because my fork was cheap and easy to convert from 27.5 to 29 and I'm really too short for a full 29er. Really enjoying the new build now that I've had some time to get used to it though !

    I recently returned to 27.5 after riding a slack long travel 29er for a bit.
    There is something so engaging and satisfying about the 27.5 ride feel. You get more feedback from the trail which makes the riding experience feel more involved.

    Totally agree, I’ve had a 29 Norco Sight for 2 years and definitely feel it’s lifeless compared to my previous 27.5. I’m considering going back to 27.5, and desperate to try a mullet which might be the sweet spot. Yes it’s faster through the rock gardens, but as you said, I don’t race and fun is more important. Thanks for doing this vid. I’d like to know your opinion on the mullet compared to a 27.5. Cheers.

      I rock a set up with 29 front & 27.5 rear, it changes the bike's geometry in a good way , that's both more comfortable to ride , with a bit of extra Ground clearance, super fun and makes the bike look cool

      Do it! I was always a 27.5 lover, didnt like the 29 demo bikes that I tried except for a Orbea Rallon but it was a size too small so it was playfull... I sold my warden v2 to buy a Banshee Titan but in XL it was not fun except on big fast trail but I usually ride more slow tech (not as gnarly as those in BC). I switched for a large and it was way better but when I tried it with a 27.5 rear wheel ohhh boyyy, I found back the smile that I had when riding 27.5 bikes!!! I'll never go back to a full 29!

    • @SsmAnyfeSt
      @SsmAnyfeSt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted to keep my warden LT v2 and wanted to try mullet with it but really didnt want to change the seatangle... I really love my Titans seatangle but miss the plushness of the warden, even with the coil shock that I have now (had a super deluxe with megneg 168mm and it was really good). If knolly make a real mullet bike with seatangle at least as steep as the warden v2 on steep position, I might go back! :)

  • @roryennis96943
    @roryennis96943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s like getting an all mountain bike over an enduro race bike, people will ask why do that, well I find a more maneuverable bike that can go everywhere to be better, steeper head tube and shorter chain stay helps when you want a poppy playful ride that you can take all the wild tech lines on. Same with riding hardtail, why do it, because I enjoy it. It means when I’m by myself I can entertain myself picking lines instead of just straight lining and plowing. Amusing part is someone who is proficient and rides a hardtail a lot runs similar speeds to when they are on their full suspension so when you have people on enduro bikes and e-bikes hustling to get ahead of the hardtail rider to drop in because they don’t want to be held up only to get caught and passed a third of the way down. The bike is a tool but it’s not everything, it won’t magically make you better. Enjoy the ride, love what you do.

  • @raizen82
    @raizen82 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    nailed it! it's all about what's fun for you. not always the strava time. could be fun factor of being playful on the trail's side hits, some like the tech climbs, some like the pain of the climbs etc. i wish bike companies still offer 27.5 options down the road especially in this day and age where marketing makes us think we should all be racing to beat times.

    I’m old, I learned on 26” soo, I’m a 27.5 kind of rider today….I recently had to replace a bike, test rode a bunch of 29” hardtails none of them felt right for the techie stuff that I like. In the end I built up a Ragley Mmmbop. One thing that really surprised me was the difference in traction, rollover and fork tuning stepping up to a 2.6 tire. Enough to make me switch to 2.6” on my 17 Transition Patrol

  • @TwoHeadsBrewing
    @TwoHeadsBrewing ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Agreed! I have my old Remedy 27.5 and it's great for bike park and tight technical sections. The Ripmo is definitely more stable and climbs better, and faster but that's not much of a concern as you said 95% of the time. Either way, bikes are fun so just go ride!

  • @ridindirty6822

    Thank you! Somebody needed to say it. Went from 26" to 29" in 2019. Gave my son the 29 and bought a Remedy 27.5 in 2020 never looked back. I also have a BMX and although I'm not great on it it's just fun to ride around town and hop curbs and drop stairs and be creative. Bottom line do what makes you happy and for some people that means running Strava constantly and clocking seconds, for others it means shutting trail forks off and getting lost and being creative

  • @icantgivecredit871

    I honestly feel like 27.5 is on its way out, but only because 29" wheels are the popular choice. I own 26ers, a 27.5er, and a 29er; riding them one after the other in descending order, I feel that the 27.5's are not too far off from 26's albeit still noticeably better. The real difference is in the 29er, whose wheels roll over chunk like it's nothing. While I don't expect nor even want comfort when I ride a MTB, I can appreciate how fast and smooth the 29er feels. And, only in very specific situations does the wheel set feel like a handful. Lean the bike over far enough and you will find it's plenty nimble.
    But I'm still undecided for a couple reasons. For one - among the three wheel sets / bikes, the 27.5er felt the most natural to me. It's no secret that the 27.5" standard was created as a comfortable middle ground between 26" and 29". That said, this was the case back when the geo numbers of 29ers were not very well suited to the wheel size. Modern 29ers are genuinely built around their wheel set and with great results. For this and other reasons, I can't find an excuse to get rid of any of my bikes. The same goes for the 26er(s). These bikes have their respective qualities and there's no way one could match another. It sounds like a cliche, but it's true: feel is subjective, and terrain varies.

    Most rides, I’m riding on public streets, paved path dirt roads to get to my local trail system and this is where 29 wheels really benefited me. Grew up on 26", came back to MTB once my kids were old enough, went to 29" and kept hitting my butt on the rear tire on the descents. My kids are adults now and I get to ride *their* bikes... 29" is fast, and the mullet (Spec Status) is, too, but 27.5" is still working for me for all the reasons Nic mentioned.

      I wish I had a good answer for you, but I live in Idaho and we still have several feet of snow in the mountains and all the bike parks. I've bedded in my brakes, played with the suspension and worked on my turning, but nothing serious yet. With that said, the bike feels really good both geometry and tire size. The bike parks here, Idaho and Montana, open mid-June. Yes, the Propain is a good value and customizable, but there are big changes for this year's model - cable routing and rear brake caliper.

There are things I really like about the 29er but the 27.5 remedy just felt more fun, which is the only reason I ride, apart from to keep fit. Also, it's not easy to find 29er bike that small and can accommodate 125 mm travel dropper post without jamming suspension components nowadays...because bike companies love to place rear shock or linkage near BB area in the name of "low CG"....which leaves no room for seat post in small size bike.

    I was on a 29er for a few years after being on my 26er, which was my first bike. I thought I wanted to get into racing and the 29er was the way to go. I did like it and it had its perks but I always felt like something was missing. I just got a new 27.5 over the summer and I’ve actually gotten fast on it. KOMs I couldn’t take before I now get. I did get it because I wanted a more fun experience and in turn I also got faster because I’m more comfortable and having more fun. I only did one race on it and I had a great result so we’ll have to see what kind of results I get in the few races I plan on doing in 2023. It’s all about getting the right bike for you. numbers are great, but if the numbers don’t add up to equal the perfect fit then it’s not going work out how you think

    I used to live/ride in Chamonix (French Alps) for about 15 years and a lot of the 'unsanctioned' trails consist of long, relatively flat traverses followed by very tight, often exposed switchbacks. One trail in particular was an 800m decent with 49 switchbacks! I haven't lived there for nearly 5 years now but I went back last Summer and 29" bikes are still in the minority amongst the locals.
    Important to consider is that Chamonix doesn't really have a bike park, it has some maintained/bike-specific trails but not on the scale you get in Morzine or Les Gets a couple of valleys away. So a lot of what the locals ride is much tighter and more exposed than your average bike park, or even a DH/enduro course, it's more like DH trials riding at times.
    You could probably get down a lot of the trails quicker overall on a 29er but you'd be doing a lot of dabs around the corners or putting a lot more physical effort into endo-turns (stoppie turn, front wheel pivot, whatever you call it), so less fun and slightly less control.

    Thanks for the cool video. Love the look of that Knolly. Finding a bike that fits your local trails and how you like to ride is most important. My AM bike is a 275 Knolly. My XC/trail bike is a 29er. My DH rig is still 275. My Knolly has lots of riding time and may be replaced with a mullet this coming season. Been through so many different bikes over the years... started about 30 years ago on fully rigid bikes with thumbies for shifters and canti brakes. We've come a long way and so much has changed except my love for riding. Agree so much of what you said. We've got lots of punchy, techy climbs and the 275 accelerates faster and mates up better with available gearing (for me). I like big knobby tires, especially for climbing and cornering in slick conditions. I think too much tire on a 29er can be felt, especially when spinning up to speed. But on a 275 it's just right. I think the 275 makes for a more nimble bike and if thats what works for your trails then so be it.

    The irony of everyone buying a 29er for the increased rollover, is that they dodge all the obstacles in the trails anyway. I bought a 2011 Trek Rumblefish 29er brand new back in the day. I initially liked it because of the "rollover" hype, but it always seemed like it was too much to get moving. Once it stayed moving it was fine, but trying to get up to speed was an act of frustration. Switched to 27.5 as soon as I could because i found it was actually way easier to get up to speed, and there was little to no perceptible sacrifice to rollover. (IE - instead of rolling obstacles, I bump-jump them now).

    I was originally going to buy a Trek Remedy as a nimble playful shore bike. Having not been in the bike scene for years I asked the bike shop guy and he recommended the Slash over the Remedy. Looking back on it now I think I still might have been better off on a slightly smaller, more nimble and manageable bike. So I'm in the process of building up a winter beater 27.5 hardtail as a proof of theory.

    I started riding in '89 on a 26er; rode them nigh forever; Briefly rode/raced a 26er BMX cruiser; and discovered the wonders of 27.5+. I did ride a Redline Monocog 29er briefly but, was not that impressed overall.
    27.5+ has worked out best for my needs; it nicely complies with the 95% rule... The diameter of the wheel/tire probably approaches a 29er's but is beefier. Outside of that observation, i could really care less about all the meaningless paper-racing, hype, and hair-splitting noob riders fall victim to thanks to the propaganda machine that is the bike industry. Most variables Cannot be noted or felt by humans and is Highly subjective/non-scientific.
    You get a bike, ride it, learn it, evolve the hardware as needed, and in good time, it becomes an extension of your body. There's no overthinking or overt focus on the equipment; so, you can focus on your skills, fitness, and fun-factor.
    Lastly, a 29er for folks under 5'3"-5'5"? Sounds a a fitting nightmare waiting to happen. 27.5 or 27.5+ would be a better fit frankly. Smaller wheels for smaller riders (unless you're talking about BMX or Dirt-jumping) is the more common-sense rule.
    For, only riders above 6'0" really benefit from 29ers (Minaar who's 6'5" for example's sake) fit-wise and there'll be an improvement in the comfort/handling department for said individuals. For the rest of us, 27.5 or even 26" (kids or really short individuals) would work just fine.

Would always pick 27.5 over 29 unless I was racing. 29 is slightly more stable and a tiny bit easier to peddle. 27.5 is significantly better at cornering, riding tight terrain, so many things. 29 barely outperforms on a few aspects and 27.5 excels on far more IMO.

    • @snaXaminator
      @snaXaminator ปีที่แล้ว

      @@topspot4834 i agree with you, but ebikes aren't just marketing. those offer totally different experience. i own like 9 bikes at this moment (6 of 'em are 27.5 wheeled, and 3 have 29 wheels). For XC the 29 is unbeatable (but ONLY if you have some super light wheelset + tyres). My ebike is an allmountain model (carbon frame 150mm small battery pack, so it's around 21kg w/ pedals) w/ 29 wheels. On an ebike the acceleration isn't a problem with bigger wheels anyway, so for exploring and enjoying the nature, that's awesome, and i won't change back to "analog" bike in doing this, just because bike industry will push us that way. on the other hand, i like more the smaller wheeled bikes (for technical trails). they are much more fun, and don't give a s#it about "extra speed" that a 29 offers. Started mtb-ing on 26 wheeled bikes, so for me a smaller wheeled bike is more attractive :P also most of the trails i have access to were built in 26" era, therefore the corners / jumps / technical sessions are more fun on a 27.5 than those "i'm the fastest" wheeled bikes.

    I think people look at numbers too much. When you see people argue on forums whether a 10mm longer fork would ruin the "intended use" of the bike, I don't even want to read it anymore.
    Also, I entirely ride for my own entertainment, but I use Strava just to have fun and see .. well .. numbers .....
    I completely gave up on the geometry numbers, when I realised I had more fun and I was way faster on a bike that ...
    1. has less travel (160/140 vs my other 170/170)
    2. has 27.5+ wheels (instead of 29/27.5 mullet)
    3. it is the incorrect size for me (I should ride an L or XL, but I that one is an M)
    4. Has a 64 degree head tube that is "way too steep" .. compared to the other bike with .. "what it should be for a bike park" ...
    In other words, the bike is much worse on paper and it should't fit. Yet ... it's somehow better....
    That's a Pivot Shuttle vs a Bullit .... btw ... boo.. ebikes ...
    My "normal bike" is a Nomad 5, and in a "park environment" I prefer it over anything and everything ... but 2 laps vs 6-7 .... often times decides what I take for "laps days" with no uplift...
    I would argue one point of what you said. Technically a 29 has a bigger contact patch (being a "bigger circle" ) ... yet, I also feel that somehow traction is not as good as on the 27.5 in some situation. So I both argue your point and myself ... I wonder if that is actually the rotational mass and different braking.... dang ... talking numbers again :)

    • @LastAphelion
      @LastAphelion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Might I show you the entire history of rally racing? The reason hot hatches came to be, some of the fastest craziest small form factor cars ever made, in just the years 1980 to 1985 when Group B was shut down because of the dangerous speed, the Audi Quattro evolved from 300 to 600hp, finally to 690hp in the Sport Quattro RS 002. Go look up crazy runs!
      Not common but some of the most successful drift and drag racers are in hatches. I'm sure you've at least seen Ken Block tear it up he's got a bunch of hatch videos
