    Wowa. One of my favorite things in life is riding the shoreline.

    I love the word 'overlook' it's become part of my lexicon now, so much better than the typical British 'viewpoint' or 'viewing area'. I usually try not to pick up words from other English speaking countries or even areas of the UK but this one deserves it.
    Beautifully captured Autumn colours, the canoe journey along the shore was superb. Another brilliant hour (I watched both 2 and 3) spent on the Boundary Waters.

      So many British words are so much better than American ones but, once in awhile, there's a gem from this side of the pond. Of course, being half British as well as being married to a Brit, I sometimes have a difficult time distinguishing which words originate where.
      We were so fortunate to have such wonderful color combined with such fantastic weather on this trip.

    Another great day in the BWCA! Funny how large that bluff is when looking back towards the campsite. Glad you got up ther efor a look around. I really liked that evening paddle, just amazing water and color. Thanks for bringing us along.

    Very nice Larry! Looks like you had some superb fall color. Also the shore paddling video was great with the calm water and fall color reflections.

    Easy to see why you like Slim Lake so well. September doesn't get much prettier! I love those amazing evening reflections of autumn color on the still water. You captured the season beautifully.
    Starting out it looked so cold when the two of you had breakfast, and I wondered how.the day would be. I'm sure you warmed up just fine climbing that hill for.that nice look around. In the evening that perfectly flat water looked so pleasant.
    A great friend, good food, fantastic scenery and good weather in the BWCA. The kind of stuff we all dream about.

      Slim is definitely a beautiful and often overlooked lake (thankfully). Easy to get to as well. Plenty of maples for fall color too. There's nothing quite as beautiful as autumn color reflected in calm water.
      With that wind blowing off the lake, it was a bit chilly that morning but, as you say, climbing the hill rectified that. With that sunshine, it was quite pleasant.
      This trip was as close to perfection as it gets.
      Thank you.

    Just catching up Larry. I gotta say that's the advantage of a canoe isn't it the fact that you can paddle somewhere and hike place few others or nobody hikes. A steep climb there but worthwhile. Wow, what awesome colors on your paddle. You did say loved fall. Well, good going Larry. Take care and have a good week. Mark

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true. A canoe allows for some flexibility if you're willing to take advantage of it. So many people (myself often included) just paddle across the lakes without thinking about stopping and exploring the shore line very much. Getting out of the boat for a bit of an explore once in awhile can be very rewarding. We sure had some wonderful color on this trip. Thanks and hope you have a good week as well.

    Larry, watching your video , took me right back to Slim Lake, in September ! So relaxing ! If that Shoreline video doesn't entice you into a Fall BWCA trip ? You must be unconscious ! Great work Larry. That was the first time I had ever stepped on Caribou Moss. So neat, I felt like laying down for a nap ! It's very cold here now, your timing was impeccable ! Thanks , and stay Warm and Healthy !

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jim. These are so fun to edit. They take me right back to the awesome trip we had. Hard to believe you never stepped on Caribou Moss before. Bet you have, just never realized it. It gets especially soft (albeit damp so not as conducive to napping) during wetter conditions. After a cold snap, the temperature has moderated today. But, the warmth is to be short-lived. Definitely a roller-coaster ride this season.

      I'm not sure I'm doing this right but here goes. Jim Dodd, I'm looking at a picture from 25? Years ago taken at the load out at Sawbill in the month of May. Myself and a friend had just come in from a 3 week trip in solo boats. We had a long discussion with the man in this picture about our solo canoe yokes. I have never seen anyone else with the seat type yoke besides this gentleman at Sawbill, your yoke in this video and myself. I believe Jim that it is you in the picture holding your canoe yoke.

    Love the autumn colours. I suppose you're heading into spring up there soon? I know I've probably said it before, but Minnesota really could be mistaken for Sweden or Finland.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We got a little taste of Spring for a few days with highs in the 40's F but now we have a winter storm bearing down on us... freezing rain, sleet, snow, high winds for the bulk of the coming week. Not sure about the "soon" part but we're gradually heading into spring. Lots of Swedes, Finns, and Norwegians settled in Minnesota -- and felt right at home. A nearby town is named "Finland" and there are many Scandinavian inspired place names in the state. There's even (contested) evidence that the Vikings may have been in Minnesota long before Columbus "discovered" America.

    What a wonderful video to watch on a cold January evening sitting by my wood stove with my cat in my lap! Looks like you were using an alcohol stove, is that correct?

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Glad I could brighten your January evening :) . Last winter, Bryan (MNMostly) gave me an alcohol stove he made. I used it on the Johnson Lake overnight trip at the end of May and was hoping to use it again on my August trip but alcohol stoves were included in the fire ban that was in effect at the time. I finally was able to use it more extensively on the September trip. I love it! Unfortunately, it doesn't have quite as impressive an effect, cinematically speaking, when being lit as a butane or white gas stove has. On the other hand, it's so quiet, it doesn't drown out other noises or conversation when it's doing its thing.

    • @bigsky2081
      @bigsky2081 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nibimocs Noticed the stove right off and wondered if Bryan had introduced you to this stove. I don't like canister stoves, I like white gas. I have built many alcohol stoves and have tested them in town. Many wilderness areas in the west have banned them. Not sure about them. You seem to like them and I have considered them for a backup to a wood stove. Care to share more thoughts on the stove?

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigsky2081 So far, I'm really liking the alcohol stove. Of course, I only boil water and it's working great for that. I love how quiet it is. The fuel also takes up less room in my pack and there are no cannisters to dispose of. It's also a lot less expensive. Only drawback (so far) has been that it's no where near as much fun to take video when I light it. There's no big "swoosh"... in fact, it's hard to tell , initially, that it's even burning. They do burn very cleanly. The other drawback, at least with the one I have, is that there's no way to "turn it off". I have to wait until it runs out of fuel. But, I've pretty well figured out how much is needed to boil a pot of water so, with careful measuring, I'm not wasting much.

    • @bigsky2081
      @bigsky2081 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nibimocs Boy howdy, those canisters doubled in price here. I have an adapter to refuel them and that helps ( I have a couple cases of butane long cartridges that were given to me) with the cost but you have to carry the empties. I like that stove of yours better than the " penny stoves" I have. I'll have to build a bud stove I guess. Thanks Larry, appreciate you sharing this.
