There is something so calming and grounded about this kind of simple minimalism. I think I would wax one of the cloths, the one used as a ground cloth. I would add a tinder pouch with flint and steel in there, probably my Hudson Bay fire tin in a sunny environment like that. Just to be able to make fire faster, and because I don't yet have Donny's level of skill with friction fire. There is a Japanese art called Furoshiki, which is sort of like origami for cloth. There are many different patterns of folding cloth that the Japanese have come up with to create pockets, pouches, sling bags, waist bags, lots of useful things, just from a piece of cloth. I'm not sure if it's always the case but the ones I know of use a square piece of cloth. Using bandanas and shemaghs you can create so many different containers for carrying things.
I immedialty thought of the Great Kilt being from the UK and its uses are very similar. The Great Kilt used to have much of the lanolin left in the wool so it offered great protection from the elements but it was a much heavier textile, it is also very versatile with the size of the fabric being so large it could be worn in many configurations and used for shelter but it would probably be too warm and heavy for your location. On another note the color of the textile could also be used to blend you into your environment and break up you outline for hunting as the Scotts did using their Great Kilts. Thanks for the interesting video.
This, while being very different, makes me think of kilts, the way they used to be. No pleats or anything, just a big bolt of cloth that could be your blanket, your clothes, a shelter, and you could secure other items to your person by placing it between the portion that went over and around the shoulder and your body. A small bag for incidentals and a blanket pin or two, a belt if you were so inclined, and you had everything you needed to travel through the highlands. Always fascinating how so many solutions to the same concerns can be found throughout cultures, and they all have some similarities, too. Thank you for sharing.
Very good video good job congratulations Donny Dust's Paleo you won the competition against Jef Staford congratulations you are strong brother success to your channel thanks¡¡¡
Some truth to that. I think I aim to make it practical. If my jump was loose and all over the place it could get caught up or something fall out. Thanks for watching.
Great video I have recently been using my jumbo Shemagh in a similar way. 75X38 so the dimensions aren’t quite the same it’s been fun to experiment with on hikes
This is great idea. I have been using the patoo setup for day hikes since I saw your video on it a few years ago. I like it better than a backpack because of the options as sling or on the waist. Adding in the jump cloth for the ground will really help my light summer blanket last longer.
When I go and search for 'bushcraft' and 'survival' videos on youtube I am met with a bunch of clickbait videos that use partial nudity and shameless clickbait. This immediately disgusts me and then I just go back to my reliable Donny Dust videos, REAL BUSHCRAFT/SURVIVAL that is straight to the point with non of that weird nudity clickbait nonsense. Good job Donny.
Thanks Ramon. I appreciate that. I’m in Central America now enjoying life, but will be doing some straight up fishing videos. Some good things coming. Appreciate you greatly. 🤙
Back to the roots he? Back to Stone Age and reanimation of the Neanderthal, so glad you took your camera with you, or we would have all missed out on it - living in the dirt, living in the good old past - that is what this world needs, it cuts down on human survival trying to survive even the simplest of health issues - like bad teeth or appendicitis - and back to the days when it was all fair game, humans were more likely to be food. It is always the question how did humanity survive -it was just pure luck!
Brother can we please 🙏 talk about that dope hat, the “fedora “. It looks wool and I know you do everything for a reason. What kind is it? It’s sooo cool
Hey Don, love the content man, so glad you help people these days get back in touch with the earth and nature, I’d like to recommend you pick up a Quran for reading while you’re out there, there are so many signs of god in nature, and it’s the best place away from all the noise of society today to really reflect on the words of god. Hope I’m not being pushy or anything, love the content again keep it up!✌🏼👋🏼
No worries at all. I’ve actually read the Quran in 2007 and again in 2009 while in the Middle East. It was a transcribed version, and my Arabic was limited back then. I have read probably all the various religious texts from the different walks of life. Thanks for watching.
cool content Donny as always. appreciate the utility you share with your variations and as always you leave it open ended for more creativity! take care
Really nice! a multipurpose lightweight backpack basically! However its definitely not for rain protection, i was definitely thinking, what would you do if it rains? But i guess you brought this to the desert so less chances for rain there ;)
I love your videos man. I hope to see you this fall in the Appalachian mountains. Question though, I'm having a lot of trouble with hand drill friction fire. I can get fairly thick some but never an ember, I'm using soft wood like people say to. Any tips?
Saw a awesome trick in better call saul where mike puts some pine under a tarp and then a piece of cloth over to create moisture for water. Not sure how valid an idea it is though in reality? 🤔
YOOOOO NEW VIDEO! Hey Donny, I don't know if you know, but some people are taking your Tik Tok videos and sending them here on TH-cam, that is, getting views without showing who made the video, impersonating you
Yeah…it’s no surprise. It’s been happening for some time. I can’t seem to get much help. Appreciate you reporting it. Thanks. Bottom line…those who can’t create, just steal. I’m used to it by now. Only if TH-cam could help.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracksyeah... I Just hope that the people that see this videos, find your Channel. Hey, changing the subject a bit, I have a question for you again. I tried flintknapping with beach rocks and unfortunately I failed. I hit the rock for 30 minutes or even more, maybe it's just my stupidity, but maybe I got too hard rocks, or maybe I didn't do it right. You can do flintknapping with beach stones? because I couldn't
Unfortunately, that's what happens when any content creator gains popularity. The good thing is that even if he's not getting direct credit, it's still Donny's face in the videos at the end of the day, so he's still winning.
@@FarukRhyan there is a method called cobbling. You essentially crack the rock down the middle and produce some pretty good scrapers. I can do a video. No worries 🤙
Currently traveling with all my gear in a patoo, and I've never felt freer. Do you have any clever ways to carry various quick-access items without relying on pockets or hands?
I have to tell you this. I just found another guy who can wear a fedora: Neal Caffrey from the USA TV series White Collar. My spirit is taking me to a place in my childhood... My spirit is a tricky god... free on hurawatch ;)
No worries. Well…sometimes I get it at or store or just dry it out myself. Case by case really. It’s good some good vitamins and sugar. Thanks for watching!
Another great video! But, I have to know, what brand of hat is that? I've been trying to figure it out by going through old videos and I can't see where you ever said anything about the hat. It's driving me crazy!
Sorry! So, I picked the hat up in Munich Germany in 2016. I’m not sure what it is as far as a name, but it’s wool and I bought it from a street vendor. It’s a great hat and I wear it all the time.
I guess I deal with them as they come, however I don’t find many of them in my area. Desert areas are pretty dry and I frequent those. I’m just careful really.

Awesome. All great suggestions. Take what I have and make it your own. Lots of variations with the Jump. Appreciate you watching so very much. Thanks!
I keep a few airplane blankets around just for this. They're not quite as big as these but still serve the same purpose.
Absolutely. Great idea!

Hey Donny, nice channel, nice video! Did you remove the handle of your kuksa to make it a bowl 😮 ?
Yes and no. I have some Kuksas with handles, and others that are handles free. Essentially it can be used both ways, but packs easily.
I am curious if using pitch on a hole in a tire would that fix it
Hi donny, what would you take as sleep gear in cold temp prob below -0 or thereabouts thx?
If I’m full Primitive mode…caribou hides and lots of them. Mix of modern and primitive…wool blankets, caribou hide and sleeping bag. Hahaha
