    Hello! I have Medaka fishes carrying eggs in a separate fish bowl at the moment with water hyacinths. Just wanna make sure, I don't need to put a male Medaka fish with them right?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well you need male and female or the eggs won't be fertile. The males still have to fertilize the females immediately before they carry eggs) sounds like you may have a male in there anyhow though. As the females tend not to lay many non-fertike eggs...they save the protein for their own metabolism generally

      @@Fishtory Thank you for your quick response. The female Medakas that are carrying eggs were from our outdoor patio pond along with the males. But Im worried the eggs or the future fry will get eaten so I decided to put females that are carrying eggs and eggs I found on the plants from the patio pond in a large bowl.

      @@Fishtory I find this odd. All the reading I’ve done and all the videos I’ve seen, people say the male fertilizes the eggs AFTER the female pushes them out in to the sack..they even show videos of how the male dance around with the female and eventually gets parallel with her and fertilizes the eggs in the sack. Then the female rubs them off against a plant or a spawning mop.

    I bought 5 Black Medaka from Quinn's fish, on Amazon and received 6. I told him I wanted females to breed and he listened. This was a month ago and I'm atm raising 20 fry too with more eggs on my mop. I'm thinking of selling them later when I can just mop yarn with eggs clinging to them.

    Some look like the Blue Eye Medaka. I think your water flow is a bit fast for them. They come from rice paddies where the flow is slow. How long have you been keeping them with such a fast water circulation. They can be kept in a mini pond with no air supple, just lots of plants.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely true. I've kept them over a year in flowing water and still water alike. So far I haven't noticed any difference in health

    • @Em-wb4kf
      @Em-wb4kf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fishtory Good for you. I love seeing them in a biotope from above and they do well without bubbler or heaters. Only this summer raising the fry has been more challenging for me. That is where I use slow air with filter, but your tips have also helped. I don't have aquaria as I like the large bowl/pot habitats. It will be interesting to see how many years they live. I guess it is early days for you, too, to know if fast flow shortens their lives over slow flow as they use a lot of energy keeping up with the current. Anyway, glad to see others enjoying Medaka. They've been my lockdown interest. I wanted cold water fish for my outdoor mini-pond so they could stay out in the winter. Have you seen Ryo Watanabe's video on his uncle's Medaka in Japan? The Japanese are experts in their care and how to make them look so natural. Thanks for responding. Cheers

    But I’ve only been keeping 3 feeder goldfish for a few months, the young swim horizontally, but are still very small, at first I thought they were larvae . How is this possible ? I’m rather surprised.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like some sort of larvae... if they move jerky or flex at all, its probably dragonfly nymphs, or maybe some sort of noseum? But it could be gold fish easily
