Fun fact : after Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire on stage... Ravi Shankar was so appalled that he refused to perform on stage that day ( Because in our culture the instruments are respected a lot ).... That's why the organisers kept a diff day for him...

Wow, I had never heard him at Monterey. It was amazing seeing Ustad Allah Rakha in his younger days, a first for me. I heard him live a few years before he passed away and he was just as awesome. I still remember the time when he formally introduced Zakir to the classical stage as a young prodigy. Legend has it that to create a prodigy, Zakir's father used to drum on his mom's tummy when she was expecting him. I believe in those 9 months, Zakir learnt all the basics of tabla while still in the womb :)

One information nugget. With love and respect we call the accomplished musicians Ustad or Pandit. Ustad is Urdu word mean expert, highly skilled. Same is meaning of Pandit which is Sanskrit word. Both words also mean Guru.... the teacher or accomplished one. So the Muslim musicians are honoured with title Ustad and Hindu ones with Pandit. Different words, same love and respect ...

I am a classical dancer for now 6 years now...from this generation.... I sometimes feel ashamed how my fellow Indians don't even know how many classical dances they have in India..... I have myself seen so many foreigners doing Indian classical dance with so much dedication and respect..,
I definitely pass this to my next generation..
But here, in India... Schools and personally they should know basic of their culture....

Beg to differ....his first wife - daughter and disciple both, of greatest Indian musical maestro Ustad Allauddin Khan (guru of pt. Ravi Shankar too) and sister of Ali Akbar Khan - Annapurna Devi, was well above him. She left her career only to promote and pave the way for her husband. But, Pt Ravi Shankar deserted her and left for USA. She did never appear in public thereafter but continued her 'sadhanaa' lifelong.
