What he sang here is called khayal. Khayal literally means imagination. Basically, within the grammatical boundaries of the raag (puriya dhanashree here), you can get as creative as you want. All this is improvised singing. Of course, taala (rhythm) is the other part of the grammar that the singer must maintain. In this case it seems it is taal jhaptaal (cycle of 10 beats). This is gold. One of the many many difficult raags to sing.

That's why I think instead of "our stupid reactions" OSR has another full form...... It's "our sensible reactions". 😛

I think it's a little difficult for people without any form of classical music background either by listening to it or by learning to understand the depths of this music and react to it one fine day. To a layman, it's easier to get entertained by the speed of ustad zakhir hussain, but only someone who understands this will be blown away even more by what Pt Bhimsen Joshi just did. Not saying one is better than the other but just reacting to this requires a different appreciation.

For people who might find the singer amusing -
    1. He is one of *the most respected* pandit(master) of indian classical music.
    2. Why? - becoz he mastered the art from many different Gurus. This is unusual. Traditionally, a disciple is learns at the feet of 1 Guru for his entire life and the eventually becomes a Guru himself.
    3. It is said that Pt. Bhimsen ji did not have a natural sense of music(for eg. some people like music but they cannot understand things like rhythm or notes). But he loved the art form. So, he left home at the age of 9. And went to numerous Gurus to learn. And then he not only mastered the art form but became one of the greatest masters of the time. So much so that even the then masters would respect him at another level.
It might seem lil uncomfortable to look at his performance for some people but his singing is what he is know for.
Also, indian classical music is a treat to ears and esp. the soul, not to the eyes.
    RIP Pandit ji 🙏

But this is truly a great example of sadhana, that he truly grasped the soul of the swara and made it his own. In history we read about ghagge khudabaksh of Agra gharana with a similar story. There is actually a belief in hinduism that the sound of universe is OM, which gave birth to entire universe.

@@yashasvisharma4442 I just stumbled into your question after a year! Sorry that my joke is not clear. I am Indian. So, of course he is in tune to me. But to us, Bhimsen Joshi is much, much, much more than "in tune." That is why, I thought it was amusing that the "foreigner" could only note *"the most elementary and obvious"* point about our music! All the spiritual content and emotional nuance is "alien" to him. I found that amusing. But he was sincere which is all we can ask. Actually, I re-listened to their response, right now, and they greatly admire the performance. So, my "joke" is rather inappropriate.
