    Can I just say, Subaru are very underrated offroad cars, you will be surprised where you can take these machines. The missis has got a 2013 2.5L, and I am getting the geolander AT by yokohama fitted to it. will be interesting to see how it goes with xmode.

    How is it that the CVT here looked OK with those climbs whereas some are showing that the car is not moving at all? Could the other have actually already broken their transmissions? Cheers.

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey mate, without seeing the other videos to compare I can't be sure but some cvts work better than others... This one being an XT with a turbo makes a huge difference over the Na cvt, they have a lot more torque which makes them more capable of steep climbs. We've taken this on some steeper stuff where it was close to stalling out but I think that's the main thing and some people don't turn traction control off which kills engine power as soon as wheel slip is detected. But yes cvt can stall out more easily than the automatics but turbo helps a lot 👍🏼 I hope this helped. Cheers

      The NA Forester engines have more torque than the Turbos up to about 2000rpm. HP is roughly the same at those lower RPMs too. You can really tell which vehicle has more torque and HP at the lower end from this video because the XT is having to really gas it up those slopes to get into that power band which kicks in around 2-3k for the turbo. The NA also have a really flat torque curve throughout their range and the turbos torque drop off around 5k rpms. The better engine with more useable low end torque for offroading really seems to be the NA engines.

    Excellent video. Picking up a very low km MY2012 S Premium auto for my wife very soon. Does that have any special driving modes? Test drive on plain tarmac was a revelation - just so “planted”!

      Thanks mate, sounds good! No special driving modes as such just the sports mode and paddle shifting for the automatic 👍🏻

    Hi mate, cool vid. Ive got the 09 XT premium, mines got the 4EAT. How have you found the auto to be holding up off road? Even tho they are more old school i prefer the 4/5EAT over the newer CVT’s

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate, nice choice of car 👍🏻 I agree, I think the 4/5eat transmissions are the go if you are comparing them to the cvt for off-roading. The 5eat is great, it has the VTD centre diff which seems to help but I think the 4eat is a little more robust so it's a good option 👌🏻

    In mud/snow is it better to turn X-mode on(VDC off) or leave X-mode off(VDC off). I know that with both of them turned off is the setup for sand from what i test drove so i assume it would be the same for snow and mud. Id rather use X-mode if I want traction. But if theres no such just send it! Nice video non the less. You earned a subscriber.

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah man I think you're right with what you are saying. I don't have X-mode so can't comment on that specifically... I usually turn VDC of for every offroad situation but it can work well when you're lifting wheels on a track as long as it's not too steep. Thanks for checking out the videos and subscribing 👍🏼

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries mate, I'm not super keen on the cvt personally and now that they've got rid of the xt I'm not sure that I would get another as I love having the turbo power. I may consider another forester but probably not a newer version... We'll see what they bring out in the future though 🤞🏼 👍🏼
      If they bring a new dual range turbo auto or manual then I'd get one for sure! Don't think that will happen though.

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mate, nice car👍🏻 I am running a 2 inch Subieliftoz kit and it's a good place to start. Tyres are also a really important thing if you plan on going off-road. Downsizing to 17 inch wheels will give you better tyre options. If you have a look on Facebook there are some awesome offroad Subaru pages with all the info you need for modifying 👌🏻

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries, tyre choice really comes down to what you want to do with the car and then choose a tyre that suits those conditions. Personally I've only ever used BFG for offroad tyres first I got all terrains but now I've gone for mud terrains. They're definitely a more aggressive option though both in AT and MT 👍🏻

    Awesome video Monty I have a mate who's looking on getting a 2010 Subaru Forester XT Premium Auto stock and he's wondering if you still get that boxer rumble even though the exhaust is stock and also is there heaps of room inside the car to go sleeping and for cargo.

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I appreciate it! To get the boxer rumble to come alive you do really need at least mufflers or a cat back exhaust, you'll need to retune if you go a turbo back exhaust though. You can sleep in it but it's not perfect. I'm about 193cm and I can make it work but if it's something your mate plans on doing regularly maybe he could sort out some kind of set up that would work well and make better than I had it. I use a rooftop tent now and love it!

    • @MontyScott
      @MontyScott  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, yes the engines are different variant
      s of the boxer motor. My one (silver) is the older 2.5ltr motor with unequal length headers on it which is what gives it that rumble with an exhaust on it, I also have other mods that are listed in the description they also contribute to its sound. The other car (Charcoal grey) is the newer 2.0ltr engine and it has equal length headers that make it sound closer to other 4 cylinder cars.
