  • This video was a recap for Subaru Sales Associates and affiliates that participated in a driving event pitting Subaru against its core competition. These tests were repeated thousands of times, with the the Sales Associates experiencing each event for themselves. This was NOT meant for public consumption and is therefore not a propaganda video. This video was a review for those people who experienced this driving event themselves. All vehicles were stock, had stability and traction control enabled if equipped, and were operated using the manufacturer's recommended tire pressures. While this video depicts individual instances, these tests were performed thousands of timeswith thousands of participants over a period of two months. The intended audience of this video experienced first hand the documented results.

I posted this AND I was there and drove the vehicles myself. I definitely didn't want to look bad and didn't know what each vehicle was capable of when climbing the hill. Each person was able to see for themselves the differences. Keep in mind most of the Subaru dealers at that time were partnered with other brands in the same store. Most of the consultants sold more brands than just Subaru and in higher volumes (hence more allegiance due to bigger paycheck). These exercises were eye opening.

Subarus AWD system is amazing. I took my STi on a jeep road to 11000ft in telluride, people in their lifted Jeeps were looking at me like i was crazy. With the right tires, its unstoppable in the snow, ive plowed through 3 foot snowdrifts while jeeps, tahoes and x5s were rolled off the side of the road. Even on sheets of ice uphill, the car just goes up, all 4 tires spinning, sliding sideways uphill...its fun as hell. and it brakes amazing in the snow, turns awesome, and outaccelarates anything

It is quite obvious that the Volvo was chucked harder on the skid pad..... and the hill climb seemed fishy to me. I doubt they had their foot hard down. All this video does is make a good brand seem like they need to lie to seem better. No disrespect to the other brands. Volvo and Toyota are both fantastic in my mind as well.

Also, super interesting that during the 2nd test, the icy hill simulation, every single vehicle's passenger front wheel stays almost completely still. Not really sure why - it's clear some of them have sufficiently advanced TC / torque management to get past the classic open-differential-on-ice problem, so if those rollers were particularly sticky it should just pick up and go.

It is clearly rigged... you can see it. For the "Log and icy hill start", each of the competitors cars are driven onto the roller area, stopped and then they try to get it going, the Subaru Legacy does make it like this. Whereas for the Subaru Tribeca, if you look closely, the driver rolls back onto the non-roller bit, dumps the throttle and then makes it. (around 4:30) The cheat here is that the driver used momentum, to get the car over the simulated hill, a FWD with no LSD could make it as well...if momentum was used!

You may think this is a "biased" review, but you should all read about AWD systems as they ARE NOT equal. Honda "AWD" is mostly FWD with a tiny bit of power being sent to the rear wheels AFTER detecting slip. It's not nearly as capable as the Subaru mechanical AWD systems, particularly found in manual transmission models. The Volvo and VW 4Motion systems (excluding the Touareg), are also electronic AWD systems which only divert power AFTER slip and can not completely disperse power to any particular wheel. Audi Quattro systems, found on all longitudinal cars (excludes A3, TT, etc) are rear biased 40/60 split mechanical systems similar to Subaru and can divert up to 49% to the front. The reason they didn't test an Audi mechanical torsen Quattro system is because it would ALSO be able to perform like the Subaru. The Acura SH-AWD system would ALSO be able to perform like the Subaru in this video, as well as the ATTESA system in the Nissan GTR, and perhaps the torque vectoring system in the Nissan Juke.
Don't think that just because the Subaru's outperform the FWD adapted systems in this video means they are perfect. Having a mechanical AWD system comes with some disadvantages such as weight, cabin space eliminated though beefier differentials, lower fuel economy because the system is "always" on, and more mechanical wear and tear.
The last systems you should know about are ones designed from RWD based cars such as the systems found on Lexus, BMW, and Infiniti models. These systems are RWD biased and perform similarly but opposite to Honda, Volvo, Nissan, etc. They are primarily in RWD mode UNTIL slip occurs and then can divert some of the power to the front wheels.
In summary, the "truest" and most capable AWD systems are those found on Subaru's with manual transmissions, Audi Quattro mechanical setups, Acura SH-AWD, and Nissan ATTESA system.

How I'm not surprised that some people are so wary of saying anything bad about Nissan's (world-conquering on circuit racing) ATTESSA yet eager to badmouth other, similarly functioning and even faster reacting electronically controlled AWD systems like 2nd+ generation Haldex used in a number of VAG and 2003+ Volvo vehicles. The only real surprise on the video is that even after visibly trying, the Subaru salesdroid couldn't get the '06 XC70 stuck on the hill to repeat the infamous earlier, viscous coupling model's failure. Lack of talent that enthusiasm couldn't make up for, I'd suppose...

No one wanted to look bad by not making it up the hill in either vehicle. Some vehicles made it and some didn't. It was an eye opening experience for the attendees.

Notice in the roller test both Subaru vehicles were fitted with the active center diff. If the standard system on the Forrester in the first test were used the result would have been very different. I own both a Subaru outback and a Lancer Ralliart and can say with 100% certainty that the bone stock symmetrical AWD system in the Subaru is far inferior to the more advanced active + limited slip diff system in the Mitsubishi on slick surfaces. Not to mention the tenancy of the Subaru system to under-steer under power instead of over-steering on semi slick surfaces, I know under-steer is considered "safer" but I find it to be much less predictable in snowy conditions.

You're both right and wrong. There are 2 types of Quattro: mechanical and haldex based. The longitudinal motor cars come with mechanical with is a pure AWD designed system, similar to Subaru's manual transmission AWD systems (yes, the automatics get different AWD systems). The A3 gets a FWD adapted haldex system which is primarily 90% fwd. The only VW with true mechanical AWD is the Touareg. The Golf R, Tiguan, and Passat 4Motion are all haldex based meaning fwd biased and not as capable as the mechanical torsen based systems.

    • @jamoflys
      @jamoflys 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I was just reading about the Haldex and saw this breakdown from a VP at Haldex after a guy with an A3 asked some questions:
I am pleased to see that you like your Audi S3 with the haldex AWD system
and that you disagree with your Torsen friends when it comes to the
excellent abilities of the haldex AWD System. It is a fact that the
electronically controlled haldex AWD system provides a much wider range of
possibilities over a purely mechanical system. We are also convinced, after
having delivered 500.000 haldex AWD systems to the market since our start in
1998, that we also have the best electronically controlled AWD system on the
      market.
We have put together some answers on your questions that I hope will be
helpful in your discussions in the Audi forum.
      1. There are situations where near 100% torque transfer to the rear axle
occur. An example is if the front wheels are on ice and the rear wheels are
on tarmac. In that case the front wheels have (almost) no grip. In that
case, the haldex coupling will transfer all torque to the rear axle and
prevent front wheel spin. On uniform surfaces however, the coupling can not
transfer all torque to the rear axle. See below.
      2. We need slip over the coupling in order to be able to transfer torque.
That slip (rotational speed difference between the front and rear axle) is
created by different tyre rolling radius (front to rear) and drive slip
between the tyre and road. The rolling raduis difference can be created by
differently worn tyres (or different dimensions, something that should be
avoided) and different load. In most cars, the front axle has a greater load
than the rear axle, which causes the roll radius of the front tire to be
smaller than the one for the rear tyres (given the same nominal size). This
gives us the possibility to transfer torque to the rear axle also when no
slip occurrs on the front tyres.
If you have differently worn tyres on the front and rear axles, the new
tyres should always be on the rear axle. This is true no matter if the car
is FWD, RWD or AWD, since you otherwise risk heavy and uncontrollable
oversteer in situations such as aqua planing. In this case, putting the worn
tyres at the front also helps not to reduce the maximum transferable torque
      (maximum rear axle torque).
During cruising which a constant velocity, we have the possibility to
transfer up to 40-45% of the torque to the rear axle, given nominal tyres.
During acceleration, the weight transfer increase the front tyre slip and
decreases the rear axle slip, giving us the possibility to achieve more or
less the same torque distribution as the dynamic weight distribution.
Generally speaking, depending on the vehicle somewhere around 60-70% is
possible to achieve during a full acceleration. Note that we are still
talking about a uniform surface, with no spin on the front wheels.
When cornering , there is in most cars a tendency for the inner front wheel
to lift and spin. In that situation, we can increase the torque transfer
      even further.
So far I have only spoken about what possibilities there is to transfer
torque. How much is actually transferred depends also on how the haldex
coupling is controlled. The engine torque and gas pedal position are
together with the wheel speeds and the engine speed the most important
signals that are used in the control. Brake, ABS and ESP signals are also
very important for enabling co-existance between the AWD system and the
ABS/ESP system. We control the coupling in order to prevent wheel spin as
well as removing it quicky if it should occur.
      3. Steering angle is not a signal used in the control of the coupling in VW
group cars. The reason for this is that the steering angle is not available
in most cars as it is only present when an ESP system is mounted. We do
however calculate the curve radius from the wheel speeds. We have software
ready using more signals as the steering angle that we offer to the vehicle
manufacturers. This enables further optimisation of handling performance.
      4. It may vary a bit with speed (and road surface), but without going into
details a figure of around 10-15% would be typical. It is enough to help
stabilising the car while at the same time saving fuel and reducing the
temperature of certain driveline components. As soon as the driver starts to
accelerate or decelerate, more torque is transferred.
      5. Yes it does. In general, a higher percentage of the torque is transferred
to the rear axle in low velicities than in high ones. This is partly due to
the fact that the total available driveline torque is larger at lower speeds
(and lower gears), thus causing more weight transfer to the rear axle. In
order to achieve consequent handling characteristics (as well as optimised
traction), more torque must then be transferred to the rear axle.
      6. The haldex coupling is completely compatible with ABS and ESP systems.
In order to optimise the performance of the ABS/ESP system, it is possible
to open the haldex couplng during ABS braking or a stability control brake
intervension. The ABS/ESP antispinn and stability control also depend very
much on being able to calculate the vehicle velocity. That is very easy with
2WD, but as soon as you have the possibility of four wheels spinning it gets
very complicated. The haldex coupling and ABS/ESP system interface make it
easier to obtain a good reference velocity.
In the cars where the haldex coupling is available today, additional signals
available with ESP are not used. We do however have software using these
signals. This enables further optimisation of handling performance and life
      span of driveline components.
During calibration of the haldex coupling , we try to optimise the traction
and handling performance of the car. These are however not the only aspects
that are important. The final calibration is alway a compromise between
traction, handling, the life span of driveline components, temperatures in
driveline components, fuel consumption and more. If the car manufacturer
wants the same calibration to be used in several different cars, a new
compromise has to be made. Different manufacturers do have different
strategies about this. Some tend to let many cars share the same calibration
while others want to optimise each car individually.
I hope that this answers your questions.

These vehicles AREN'T designed for steep loose dirt hills.
But as a side note I used drive a car carrier in the 1990s and deliver new Subaru and yes they performed flawless in deep snow and various road conditions.

I love reading comments about biased people and there cars...... Awd sucks and those drivers sucked. Yeah of course it's biased for Subaru. They don't want you to know how much it is to replace a part or for you to know how much oil leaks from them. Also GAD DAMN they're ugly cars! All Subaruz

im not much of a car guy, i didn't know what to look for when buying my first car 5 years ago, then some british dude pulled up to the persian dealership i was browsing at. it's a 2005 forester, and he took exceptional care of the car - claimed to have bought it new when he moved here. so far, it's been nothing but impressive to me, especially considering i bought it as a sorta 'beater' first car. i like to take road trips and go camping a lot, so it's been in just about every situation you can think of. a gripe i do have is that the knobs that control the ac pop out really easily, this is probably something to do with the age, but overall it's not a huge deal. the only work i've had done is a replacement to the belt since the original was waaay past due, and the rear right axel was all fucked up, probably something i did to it though. other than that, i wouldn't doubt this thing will last us another 10-15 years. again im not a car guy so i have no idea if anything about the car is at all remarkable when compared to others, i just like it.

I originally bought my wife an 05 crv because Hondas were always good reliable cars but quickly found out that the crv is the biggest pile of garbage ever and got rid of it and now she's driving an 08 forester. Personally I have a 99 legacy gt and an 08 impreza hatchback.

I like how they used a XC70 WITHOUT traction and or stability control. I have one and with those on, you can do whatever on icy, wet and muddy roads without loosing any bit of control. And that XC90 could climb that and even more

Literally in the speed bump footage at the beginning the subaru is wallowing all over the place. This video is a perfect example of instilling cognitive dissonance in a subordinate.

In the Ice Hill test, the Volvo required little effort to get to the top of the simulated hill. Once he got to the top, all he needed to do was step on the gas to get over the ramp. Instead, he purposefully swerved left and right to make the Volvo slide down.

Those middle yellow rails are probably used by "these proffesional drivers" rubbing the inner wall of the tires in order to pass the rollers on the ramp.
