In this video I set out to attempt a pretty wild hill climb that I tunred back on last time I was there as it was raining and decided it'd be best left for another day. Little did I know I would run into some seriouse problems and end up needing to do some extensive mechanical work on the tracks to get back home.
2012 Forester XT S-Edition has the following mods:
-Subieliftoz 2 inch lift kit
-RalliTEK Adjustable Rear Control Arm
-STI Front Contol Arms
-Rear HD King springs with S-Edition shocks
-BFG Km3 Tyres (235/75r15)
-Method Race Wheels 703
-JMax Engineering snorkel and airbox
-Process West top mount
-Larger fuel pump
-Turbo back exhaust
-vf52 turbo (factory fitted to this particular spec Forester)
-Dyno tuned to suit listed mods

Good recovery Monty - as mentioned in a previous comment I’ve owned several Subarus including WRX and original Forester the last being a 2009 XT automatic - over the years I kept getting stuck on boggy tracks and steep ascents - even with aired down mud tyres - I concluded that I needed increased ground clearance and wheel articulation but not possible without huge engineering changes and costs - so I settled for an auto diesel Hilux with 4WD options, good ground clearance all standard and aluminium canopy setup - I still use the XT for bitumen and light off-road touring.
That Pajero nailed it up at the end, sounded Beast mode. Nice recovery, glad the guy who came to rescue you had his pants pulled up and we didn't get plumbers action
Haha yep the Paj goes pretty well! Yeah we lucked out! I definitely owe him one!
WOw, what an adventure. I'm impressed that you knew what broke, how to fix it, and had a friend who was good enough to sacrifice the pub to help you out.
Haha yeah it was certainly an adventure! I've had a lot of Subarus and tinkered with them enough to know how to do some basics but there's still plenty I don't know! Yes very lucky indeed to have a mate willing to help me out👍🏻
you have to see it to believe it. Man man man, super cool!
Haha thanks mate! It was good fun 😁👍🏻
Glad you kept your sense of adventure when you left WA!
Haha yes of course, you've got to keep that sense of adventure alive! I do think I'll have to come back to WA at some point... There's still so much that I haven't seen over there!
Fair bit of work to tackle on the side of a hill. Good job mate! Glad to see you reppin the msc sticker still! Hopefully catch up soon!
Thanks mate, yeah it sure wasn't the ideal location! For sure, gotta to rep the MSC sticker! Is this Evan?
@@MontyScott oh yes it’s Evan! 👋 probably should have said that 😂
Keep the good work up mate, I’m enjoying the vids I’ve watched!
Ah makes sense 😂 Thanks mate will do, glad you enjoyed them! It's been a while, I'll have to drop in and see you guys soon when I'm in Melbourne next 🤙🏻
This is sweet! Your rig looks awesome, reminded me of Matthew 6:19-21. Thanks for the video!
Great video mate
Thanks mate👍🏻
That’s a beast of a hill! And we’ll done on the recovery. Did you have a spare control arm to drive out? Also love the part just beforehand saying “hope I don’t break anything”! Hope Rallitek come to the party for you. 🔥
Thanks mate, yeah it's pretty decent little climb! I reckon I could do it just unfortunate about the arm giving up! Yeah I got my mate to come and pick me up... We headed to the hardware store to grab those ratchet straps and then to mine to get a spare factory control arm, the trolley jack, Jack stands and my power tools! I had tools and spares with me but just grabbed all of those things to make it a bit easier👍🏻 haha yeah I thought that was pretty funny also... jinxed myself 🤣 yeah me too, last time I had this happen they were great and helped me out with replacement bolts👍🏻 now they're only running the new design so I'm hoping they'll get me sorted with some freshies by the lifetime warranty they came with🤞🏻👌🏻
@@MontyScott they better, since a broken "better" control arm isn't great publicity 😂 Should never have happened, could have brought you into serious trouble. Not everyone is this beast you are, fixing this on the go. Deep respect man!
Yeah let's hope so, they have been good to deal with so far so I'll reach out to them next week when they're back in the shop and see what they can do for me. Yeah it shouldn't have happened and because it's now happened twice it has set me back a few dollars for various experiences and done a bit of damage to other components... But they have made a redesign to fix the problem which is great! It's always a good sign when a company wants to improve its products and look after their customers 🤞🏻 thanks mate, I really appreciate it!
Fantastic video! That Subaru of yours is a complete weapon, but even the best cars get beaten by tough tracks sometimes. I loved the trolley jack, not sure I’ve seen one off road before. I reckon you chose it for portability😂 I’m looking forward to the trilogy!
Haha thanks mate, yeah everything has it's limits especially something that has a design fault! However I'll be back for round 3 with new control arms... Not sure I'll be making the trolley jack a permanent fixture in the Foz though!
Para aflojar la tuerca...Coca-cola🍀🍀
I need a couple good mates to call like this good video brother love the xt
Thanks mate, yeah I was very lucky to have my friend close by and available to help me out 😁👍🏻
This gives me ptsd from when I broke my SH on a hill last year, at least you didn't have to leave yours out bush over night haha! Great Video Monty, Ill have to get in touch via email soon about a trip over east later in the year and maybe a channel collab if you interested :) Stay safe on the tracks buddy!
Haha yeah it's never good if you have to leave the car behind! I wasn't keen on doing that so I made the trip out and back and fixed the car all in about 3 hours👌🏻 thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! You can always reach out mate and see what's happening but the best place to contact me would be Instagram. I do get quite a few people wanting to catch up and go on some adventures which is awesome but I barely have time to go with my own mates! So I just don't have time to catch up with everyone! Thanks mate, you stay safe out on the tracks too👍🏻
nice video mate. What is your Tire size?
Thanks mate, they're 235/75r15.
They require a fair bit of work to make them fit.
damn bro that's huge! What would be the maximum size without having to cut things off? maybe 225/60R15? Also are those rims 15x7?
Sick video! 🔥@@MontyScott
What a recovery!! Amazing! Is this a S-Edition with 5eat or XT with a 4eat? The latter one allows you to drive fwd only. The 5eat I believe not.
Thanks mate! Yeah it's the S-edition with the 5eat that has a VTD centre diff so that front wheel drive option isn't possible with this car... I don't think it would have helped too much in this situation anyway but it's a pretty cool feature 👍🏻
Onya Montosh, I liked, commented and subscribed. How do you think a Hyuandi I30 would handle this?
Haha thanks mate! As long as it's a rental it'll go anywhere you point it with enough speed 🤣🚙💨
Looks like some fun wheeling
Thanks mate, it certainly was! There wasn't a boring moment 🤣
Great vid mate
Thanks mate 😁👍🏻
Great episode. We already contacted at Insta about this issue.
Did you get the revised control arms?
How about your lift, did you lower the front subframe?
I'm running a 50mm lift and at the rear I installed a subframe lift as well.
But still thinking about the front, not very keen about the angle of the cv joints at the moment.
Hey thanks mate, not yet but that's what I'm hoping for. I have to reach out to them and let them know what happened.
No lowering of the front subframe for me... It's not really needed for a 2 inch lift only the rear needs it in the newer Subarus with multi-link suspension 👍🏻 I've had mine lifted for about 4 or 5 years and never had an issue with the front CVs👌🏻
Hey dude. Love your vids. I’m super keen to buy an xt…do you have a list of essential mods that you have done to your beast? Cheers man
Hey thanks mate! Yeah nice, they're great little rigs! It really depends on what you want out of the car? In stock form they're great! But if you want more power or better off-road ability or better road handling then there're certain things that'll help. But mostly I'd recommend just getting yourself a good car and drive it for a while first and see where you feel it's lacking for your needs and address it from there 👍🏻
Why is it not locking the spinning wheel transferring drive ? My sh does this when traction control is on.... my car would drive str8 up that incline ( im confident on that) (( I think lmao 🤣 it's a pretty steep hill might eat humble pie?))
Hey mate, I was just testing the waters to begin with and not giving it too much throttle input because I wasn't sure if I'd broken anything else... The traction control really had its work cut out for it! It's hard to show how steep the hill is on camera when you're already on the hill and it had most of its weight on the front right wheel and the rear left wheel but also the rear diff and tow hitch were stuck on some high ground a bit like an anchor! And on top of that the rear right wheel that you can't see was trying to climb a little slick rock that was almost vertical but because it was hung up in the rear on the diff it didn't have enough weight on the wheel to climb. You can see the front right left wheel (closest to the camera) was getting braked but because the traction control is a reactive system you really have to give it a good chance to work sometimes and when it starts you need to give it more throttle like I did in the end when it finally moved. It's a surprisingly good traction control system if you give it a chance but it definitely has its limits 👍🏻
@Monty Scott agreed bro 100% .... you got a few perfect angles on cam. I watched it a dozen times looks like 35,40 deg angle.
You did fkn well to get as far as you did! No criticism intended.... wish I was there to see it and give it a crack !.... keep up the good work ,excellent videos, thanks for the opportunity to see your adventures..... like I said I'd be next inline to break my control arm hahaaa and crack a beer with you as we scratch our heads ...... legend 🍻
Thanks mate, no criticism taken 👍🏻 Will do, it's always fun to get out there and capture some of my adventures.
I'll be back again with new control arms hopefully the redesigned newer version that fixes this known weak spot!
Cheers 🍻
do you notice any brake fade? id be worried with all that down hill
No problem with brake fade 👍🏻
Is that weakness a problem just for rallytech ones or genuines too?
Hey mate, no this is just for these particular arms with the original design that is no longer produced... Since then Rallitek has redesigned and released a new version that addresses this fault. The issue is not there for genuine arms but the overall strength of the OEM ones is far less! 👍🏻
Good try, Monty. 🍿 Come back stronger, perhaps with a rear locker next time!
Thanks mate! I'll definitely be back! Yes a new locker for my car is just about to be released so with that and hopefully the new gen rear control arms this shouldn't be a problem 😁👍🏻
@@MontyScott new locker for the SH? Are you talking about a different locker different to the Torq locker?
Hey mate, yeah it's a new locker for the VA2-TYPE rear differential... This Forester is an S-edition that has a 5eat unlike the rest of the SH autos that are 4eat with a r160 rear diff. The new "VA2-TYPE" locker is just about to be released and will give a whole new range of Subarus the same option that all those r160 Subies have had... It'll be for 5eats, some CVTs and other models like the Wilderness Outback and Foresters 👍🏻
@@MontyScott Yes. The SH shares the same diff housing as the OBW, FW, and 21-23 Crosstrek manuals. Can't wait to see you install it and give it another go.
Yeah it'll be exciting to have a locker when it's available but I'm sure I could get it done without it 😁 It's unfortunate that I had faulty control arms... Once I get them replaced with the new version that fixes this issue then I'd be keen to head back 👍🏻 yes same diff housing but only in the 5eat S-edition SH the other SH Foresters have the r160.
I have subie offroading videos on my channel
Nice, the more off-road subie videos the better 👍🏻

What a disgraseful way to treat a nice quality car 👎
Sorry if you feel this way, however this car has given me so many fantastic experiences over the years and taken me all over the country! I have modified it to enjoy it and that is exactly what I'm doing here! Although I'm considerably hard on the car I take really good mechanical care of it - I keep up maintenance on anything that needs doing more often than not upgrading anything that I'm changing and I keep the oil fresh changing it regularly with top quality oil and a genuine filter 👌🏻it's all part of the fun 😊👍🏻
