    Any prevention of the build up of air inside will help hugely. So removing the cover inside and drilling 3 quarter inch holes on front and 3 at the back would also help tremendous. My opinion of course 🙂

      Originally I thought of that but the top section of the shell is sealed from the bottom section with the control board.

    Lovin' it! I've been pondering the best way to add air vents to my wheels safely for the better part of 3 years, and this just convinced me to take the plunge and try things! So glad to see that it helped so much and can't wait to see your custom scoops and improved filters!

    I wonder if this mod would have saved any of the wheels on overheat hill?

      No. The heat buildup from that test is too quick and there's not enough air flow at that slow hill climb. And I like to do the Overheat Hill test on unmodified wheels :-)

    You are the man!!! I love this hobby/sport/addiction! It really is a shame though that we the community have to be responsible to fix issues that the manufacture's seem to continue to brush over. QC should be demanded of these companies by the entire EUC community! That said THANK YOU!!!! for showing us how to make our rides better, safer and more complete!

    Just an idea, thinking perhaps in front of the lift switch could be good for ventilation holes seeing it will be protected from rain/dust being tucked away, under and away from the front draft pushing into the shell. Additional open cell foam barrier in between. Possibly a tube inside the shell to direct circulating airflow to cool the motherboard from there...."along side passing all the battery wires" then airflow could be achieved by the the right and left shell pathway separately to form a flow in and out. And yes!! I love electric unicycles. Thanks for your TH-cam clips!!!

    Let’s hope the company are paying attention to your thoughtful modification, Marty, it shouldn’t be so hard to modify the panel moulds to have the cutouts or at least add a scribe mark where they should be cut away. I know you’re unlikely to tumble, but if the scoops are extended just a bit further forward then they are likely to act as sacrificial bumpers.

    already have aluminum tape will put 2 layers i be just fine and won't cost me a dime😉
    i am thinking just exaust the hot air out at the back of the euc with a centrifugal fan like the Nikola but bigger pretty much like a computer case . you really drop the temperature alot 👌🏻👍🏻

      @@ElectricUnicycles yes the simplest way is always most effective route. I have a fiberglass shell and a roll cage covering the monster. I might just take that plastic siding cover off completely and just cut hole in my fiberglass shell.

    Good mod. I picture a thin wedge slice off the edge of a wide plastic pipe with ventilation slats to hold your scotch bright pad if you wanted something more sleek.

    Today was 100° in the Bay Area. Hence to say the used Commander I purchased two weeks ago overheated. I tried the mod so far and used frog skins to prevent dust from entering the mother board compartment. I was curious to see if it would work without funneling the air in with tape but that was a fail. 😂. I’ve taped it up and will try in about an hour. I’ll keep you guys informed onto the results. ;)

      Follow-Up:
      Commander continued to overheat despite funneling air in with the use of duct tape. I then ripped off the front two frog skins to see if that would help but it failed to prevent the Commander from overheating again. I’m now going to try adding two more exhaust holes near the one I drilled already. Hopefully, that would make the world of difference. I think it will. I’ll report back.

      @@RocABye I used my Commander today for a long group ride in the mountains. It was a hot day. Only got into the low 60's worst-case. The air scoop is critical and the size of the holes is important (don't skimp and drill 1/2" holes instead. And ANY kind of filter material will kill airflow, from my experience. Let me know how it goes.

      @@ElectricUnicycles I drilled an additional two holes in the rear and was concerned that I would not get as fair of comparison being that it now began to cool down in temperature in the Bay Area but I gave it a try anyway and to my disappointment, I overheated again. 🤷🏽‍♂️. I will continue going through the process of elimination. I did remove the frog skins in the front but not the rear. Tomorrow I will remove the rear on all 3 holes. If this doesn't work my next step will be to include an exhaust fan. Something has to work. This is going to be my racing wheel and therefore it needs to be reliable. I already missed the last AVS race and my worse thoughts are finally entering and it overheating during the race 🤦🏻

      @@ElectricUnicycles oh, I believe it is. It may be a combination of yesterday's heat wave and the way I ride. However, if I can figure it out during a heat wave I will feel more confident on the wheel during the normal temperature days.

    For filters try some vacume cleaner filters.

      Unfortunately that material is way too restrictive - they work in vacuum cleaners because of the very strong suction from the motor.

    Wonder how it would be without thee scoops, just a round hole with thin membrane like filter patch front and rear. I know the scoop forces more air in but you might get enough airflow with just that. Just thinking out loud. But it made a massive difference.

      Might still work (to some degree) without the scoops. But the scoops also provide a lot of protection from stuff getting into the shell.

      I replaced the foam on the mic with one of these amzn.to/3iWzLsI The Sony recorder creates MP3 files - it's not platform specific

    I get over heat warnings at 140f. Is that not overheating? I just left that setting as it came. It seems like your talking of 160f to 180f being the range to avoid. Should i raise my temperature alarm higher than 140f?

    Hey Marty, as usual, love your ingenuity in your solutions instead of the community whining about issues. Its GW so either we stop buying their wheels & ride "sissy" IMs or man up to the big show with solutions. A 10c+ decrease (ie~20% drop) in internal temps is huge by any metrics.
    BTW I wonder if using a 2" louvered round pop in vents (amazon link following) might do as well. It'll be an easier install (prettier as well) & the fast moving outer air should be enough to suck out the hot air much like a slight window crack sucks outs internal air in a moving auto. Anyhoos good experiment for even other hot running GW wheels. Easy 'nuff to stick a cutout (pun unintended) scotchbrite pad or even furnace filter paper for anti dust duties & ofcos, the doitall duct tape for rain.

      Thanks for the louvered vent links. Nice. I'm saving that for future reference, particularly if I mod my EX-N. Unfortunately for the Monster Pro there isn't room to place those vents, but I think they'll be perfect for the EX-N.

    Cool if they mounted the motherboard on the side panel. Then out thu the back of the motherboard have a heat sink coming thu the side panel. Or have the side panel made from some metal and that whole panel can be a big old heat sink. Good bye over heating hello more power

    What is the overheat temp for wheels? My ex.n is also running hot.

      The EX-N overheats at 79-degrees. I've done it many times.

      @@ElectricUnicycles interesting, mines been leveled off at about 65 degrees but I added a second fan in the rear facing the heat sink. I’ll have to remove the black box and see what the difference is.

      @@Jakebitess Do some steep hill climbing for 5+ minutes and see what happens :-) Yeah, adding a 2nd fan should make a big difference. From mine and other experience, removing the black box will drop the temperature by ~10-degrees.

      @@ElectricUnicycles Just a thought…no doubt this is a much improved airflow but is it simply cooling off the temp sensor more than anything else? Masking the actual unit temperature. I don’t know what the sensor is focused on most, circuitry only or motor and power supply/batteries as well? Does that make sense? Kind of like tricking the sensor into “thinking” it’s cooler than it actually is. Maybe a non-issue…. In any event, better airflow has to be better.

      @@maxwellmark I understand the concern. The temperature is traditionally monitoring the MOSFET temperatures and seems to reliably represent the overall temperature of the MOSFET's. Every wheel I've ever ridden (>30) uses the same methodology and their behaviors seem consistent.
      If the additional airflow was focused only on the sensor you would have a point. But the airflow is indirectly hitting the control board so I believe it's really lowering the temperature of the MOSFETs.

      @@maxwellmark Also, if when my companions Monster Pro was overheating at 79-degrees, my wheel was also overheating but was masked by the temp sensor being cooled, then my Monster Pro would have catastrophically failed because the MOSFET's will self-destruct much above 80-degrees for any length of time.

    Man, you got to be kidding me! I have a S18 and paid ~$3000 cdn. There is no way I would find this expectable after paying that much money.
    I am not a DIY guy and am willing to pay for a product the is reliable and trouble free.
    My time is limited and every hour I spend fixing/DIY’ng, can be spent with my family or ride my EUC.
    Crazy, if the manufacture do not get their shit together, no one will buy there products, especially when more people start riding.

      Show me where I can buy a 24-inch EUC with a 100-mile range and maybe I'll buy that instead. But I understand your viewpoint, especially if you don't have time or tools.
