Took apart my STIHL trimmer after it started to bog down. Didn't find anything mechanically wrong with it. Was about to take off carb and clean it when I ran across this video. Removed the screen and that was the problem. It was nearly 100% blocked. Thank you!!
This man just saved me 100 dollars my weed eater was doing the same thing I cleaned that metal screen off the muffler now it runs like it’s brand new thank you so much
Spot on! My neighbor brought his trimmer over last night. It would start but then die. I found he forgot to mix in the 2 cycle oil on the last fill up. Once we sorted that out it ran but sounded terrible and bogged down when you hit the trigger. I was worried it might have scored the cylinder from lack of lubrication, but it looked fine with my cheap boroscope. All I could think of was to rebuild the carb, but found your video this morning. As soon as I heard the sound yours made I knew it was the same issue. Sure enough, the spark arrestor was completely clogged. Cleaned the screen and all is well! Thank you for posting this video.
It happens quite a bit. I just fixed a 4 stroke generator with the same issue so it's not only 2 strokes. I'm guessing it's the quality of fuel available today.
Thanks man! You saved my day. I'm a mechanic but not for 2 strokes and i did a favor for a friend and his weed eater has same problem. I just deleted that screen😅
yep. had same prob with my fs45. changed the carb thinking that was it. after watching your vid took mine off...... totally black and glogged. lucky i have a gas torch and just burnt it all off. thanks mate
Good fix. I generally take the muffler off and then I'll take a mapp gas torch and heat up the whole muffler inside and out until it glows orange, let cool and reinstall it. All carbon burnt to dust. Generally they run good as new or better.
Great tip bro...thanks. I think my 4 mix has the the same that that 2 stroke had. When cold, mine hesitates to rev up fully until its warm and still here and there after it's all warned up it bogs down and then revs as it should randomly. I'm gonna check the exhaust screen...I have an fs91r.
Fighting with this issue with my FS90r. Screen was clear. I will try to loosen up the exhaust itself and see if that helps. I’ll try it tomorrow, just locked the weedwacker up for the night out of frustration.
Awesome thing to keep in mind before you jump in to everything else because if that is the problem you will still get same results un till you check it out thanks
I loosened the exhaust for diagnosis. You should remove the entire exhaust to be sure it's not clogged beyond the screen. I have seen some pretty heavy carbon buildup inside the exhaust itself. I prefer to do a thorough job to prevent a returning customer.
I can confirm. I only removed the screen and the problem persisted. After watching the video, I loosened up the muffler like he did and walah. You could definitely feel the difference in power. I now know I have to clean my muffler
petrol strimmer bogs down could it be the exhaust I've cleaned the filter in mine. New carburettor new air filter new spark plug and fresh petrol and new oil. Still bogs down when adding throttle.
The exhaust itself could be clogged but if the carb is adjustable it may just need adjustments. They usually fit many different engines and need to be adjusted to suit. To see if it's your exhaust, just loosen the exhaust bolts and see if it reves up then.
Replace the diaphragm, but honestly I would just get a Amazon carb from like HIPA . It will be cheaper and easier and if it doesn't work just send it back. Reason I say that is there are one way valves in the block carb that if they got messed up you won't know, you can't replace them and you'll spend money and time rebuilding and it still won't work right. Crazy world we live in, when a new carb is cheaper.
This piece is for emissions kinda like a catalyst. Remove it and don't look back unless, you repair equipment for a living as your warranty relies on it.
I checked the screen on my FS90R, it was clean as a whistle. So thats not the issue. Trimmer runs fine then when it gets warm the damn thing just keeps bogging down. Guess i need a carb after all.
How do you do that? My trimmer will run for a few minutes then it bogs and surges at full throttle not even enough to turn the head. Thank you in advance.@@TepcoCycleRepair
After I run mine for about 20 min it wants to keep turning off and won't stay running. Have to feather the trigger to use it. Any thoughts? Stihl synthetic oil.
Yes it could, make sure it's not clogged. If it's not, turn your idle screw up an 1/8 of a turn. Other things can cause it but I would start there. I have a Stihl in the shop now, won't idle due to a partial seizure from straight gas.
I tried this and still have the same results fire's up sounds great I cut to start trimming and it boggs out to an idle then I have to start feathering the throttle to bring it back then it does it again ... any ideas ?
The diaphragm is probably dry not pumping fuel fast enough, I would replace the carb with a factory carb. I don't bother rebuilding any more and cheap carbs are hit and miss.
@@TepcoCycleRepair pulled the carb and disassemble the lower half of the carb where that diaphragm is it looked good diaphragm didn't look to dry or brittle going to just buy a factory replacement tired of fooling with this thing.
yep im having the same problem on my FS90R. Runs fine then when trimmer get warm the damn thing just keeps bogging down. My muffler screen was clean. Guess i need a carb after all.
It is a spark arrestor, as well as a screen to stop debris from entering the combustion chamber and/or crank while it's off. Remember on a 2 stroke, with the piston at tdc, the exhaust is a straight shot to the crank.
If yours doesn't, in this order, I would check compression, make sure the cylinder bolts to the crankcase are tight, check for spark, use a factory carb not a cheap copy. Clean air filter and exhaust. If it doesn't run after that, throw it in the garbage, probably has bad crank seals.
I remove those screens from all my 2 cycle engines. They serve no purpose. On my latest two new 26 cc homelite trimmers I was able to simply punch those screens out with a screwdriver
Same here but mind only starts bogging down after it get hot and ran for 20 mimuted or more i can get up to half throttle for a sec or 2 and it bogs down and if i let it return to idle it shuts off. Only does this when hot, clean spark arrestor and made no difference.
@@TepcoCycleRepair Very true, I didn't think of that. I'm from Pennsylvania and we don't see them. I was watching some of your videos and now I sub your channel. Great content!!!
Yes, if the screen is clear and removing the exhaust doesn't make a difference, the diaphragm in the carb is most likely dry and not pumping enough fuel.

The “spark arrestor” screen was designed to keep bugs out? I would not take any of my equipment to this guy.
I would probably watch the entire video..
Why doesn't Sthil just include 5 of the spark arrestor screens when they sell you the snipper.?

Where I'm from it's to keep the mud daubers from building a nest and clogging it up!
What if the spark arrester is missing and it's bogging down?
Then it's the carb, usually the diaphragm dries out and can't keep up with the fuel needed, or the ports get clogged and the fuel can't flow.
I checked the screen on my FS90R, it was clean as a whistle. So thats not the issue. Trimmer runs fine then when it gets warm the damn thing just keeps bogging down. Guess i need a carb after all.

The spark arrestor screen is absolutely not to keep things from getting in, its to keep sparks from coming out!! Hence the name spark arrestor.
