  • Prasat Preah Vihear ប្រាសាទព្រះវិហារ
A large sandstone temple that straddles the Cambodian-Thai border, and sits precariously on the cliff edge. Prasat Preah Vihear is also commonly known as Khao Phra Viharn over the border in Thailand.
The site had been occupied and built upon over many centuries, the current structures predominately date between the 10th-11th centuries.
Preah Vihear Temple ប្រាសាទព្រះវិហារ Prasat Preah Vihear) is an ancient Hindu temple built by the Khmer Empire, located on top of a 525 meter (1,722 ft) cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, in the Preah Vihear province of Cambodia.
Preah Vihear Temple was supported and modified by successive kings and thus bears elements of several architectural styles. It is unusual among Khmer temples in being constructed along a long north-south axis, rather than having the conventional rectangular plan with orientation toward the east.
Construction of the first temple on the site began in the early 9th century. Both then and in the following centuries, it was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva in his manifestations as the mountain gods Sikharesvara and Bhadresvara.
The earliest surviving parts of the temple, however, date from the Koh Ker period in the early 10th century, when the empire's capital was at the city of that name.
Today, elements of the Banteay Srei style of the late 10th century can be seen, but most of the temple was constructed during the reigns of the Khmer kings Suryavarman I (1006-1050) and Suryavarman II (1113-1150).
In the wake of the decline of Hinduism in the region, the site was converted to use by Buddhists.
In modern times, Prasat Preah Vihear was rediscovered and became subject dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
The site is well worth a visit. Its no lk ger accessible from Thailand directly but its an easy deive from Siem Reap or from the border crossing to the west of the site.
It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and an amazing part of the regions history.

This temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was amazing to visit. Another site in Cambodia, dating back to the 6th century, is also a great place to visit. Here is the video of it if you want to see.

Ya it was a great visit. I just wish that it would’ve rained to knock the smoke down so it wasn’t so hazy from the view point. You could still see how high it was but it wasn’t very clear on the camera. Still a great visit.

@@endlessjourneytravels It’s just perfected on the video. I’ve never been there and it’s so existing to see such huge temple built on the mountain. I wonder how did they bring so many heavy stones to top of the mountain in ancient time.

@@NeekaSimon it looks like some of the stones were quarried on site. The rest had to be drug up to the top using elephants. The temple itself didn’t use as many stones as the staircases on the east and north sides. I show a little bit of the east staircase at the start. It was a huge undertaking. Every time I see things like this I’m in awe of the dedication and hard work of these ancient people. Really amazing.

You're like the real Indiana Jones. I love it. Preah Vihear/Temple in the Clouds is my favorite.

Thank you very much. :) I hope I don’t run into as many problems as Indian Jones during my next temple visit. Lol
I’ve been trying to get to this temple for years and I’m so very happy I was able to make it. With it being closed to come in from Thailand it’s a bit more difficult but well worth the effort. To me Angkor is still the best but I really love this one being on top of the mountain. It was smoky so the views were not as good as I hoped for but still was a great trip.
Thank you so much for watching.

This temple was the reason I came to Cambodia. I’ve been trying to get here for years and finally made it. I’m back in Siem reap now and will spend the last day here before riding back to Bangkok. The next trip for us will be a short visit to South Korea. My wife wanted to go there so that is the next stop before I have to go back to work.

Wat Phou in Laos looks similar to Preah Vihear Temple in Cambodia.

I have plans to get to Laos soon to see this temple. I’m trying to figure out how to cross the border on my motorcycle in order to see it. I might end up taking the bus to Pakse and renting a scooter to go there. I’m excited for the journey and to see it as well. I just hope it’s soon. lol

@@endlessjourneytravels Super 👍 A few Cambodian drove their cars from Cambodia to Laos passing by Don Krakor (Cambodia) / Voem Kham (Laos) border situated an hour north of Stung Treng province Cambodia. But, I don’t know about motorbike. A part of Wat Phou, there’s a Khmer Buddhism temple in Vientiane built by a Khmer-Lao King Sethathirat in 1563 It’s said to be a very sacred temple 😁

@@NeekaSimon I should be able to from Thailand since it’s a Thai licensed motorcycle. I just need to get all of the documents and go for it. I just hate dealing with customs and stuff like that. If you’re missing a piece of paper everything stops. I haven’t been to Vientiane in at least 12 years. I like the place and I should make my way back there. This temple would be worth a visit. I like historic places like this. Thank you for the information.

This site predates Siam and Thailand. The region was much different in the 9th century than it is today.

Preah Vihear was wonderful. After Cambodia is a fast trip to South Korea before I have to go back to Thailand to work. Never enough time to see and do everything.
