    Mature kapok or silk floss trees hace spikes all over the trunk, buttress roots and branches. In the town where I live there a two huge specimens in the center of a main road the roots are as tall as me, very imposing and amazing trees.

    That weed has a name. It's called woodsorrel. The reason it's so hard to get rid of is because it has a rhizome just below the ground and any piece of that rhizome you leave in the ground will form a new plant. It also sets thousands of seeds. Some people like to nibble the leaves because they have a tart taste, but you only want to do just a leaf or two because the taste comes from calcium oxalate, which is poisonous in large quantities. It's the same poison you find in rhubarb leaves.

    Very relaxing and interesting video, thank you! You have a lot of work this time of the year, I'm glad to see you're enjoying it! You've been very successful with the tropicals, I've found most of them too much work here in the North.
    My autumn is more boring, as the garden season is over, and most of my (100+) indoor and indoor/outdoor plants are succulents which need next to no care during winter. I should invest in some new growing lights too though, for the fussy ones.

  • @acheronexile

    Its 40 degrees inside my bedroom, warmest room of the house, but I brought the plants inside, it might freeze a few days and even get below freezing for a while soon, but not anywhere near zero just yet. I'm pretty sure I can leave my maple outside if i just pull it near the house for wind break. The tropicals should be fine in the living room, they were watered recently.

    • @avistra1609
      @avistra1609 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they're actually not too harmful as far as weeds go! they're nitrogen fixers, so they can actually help fertilize the plants they grow near - but the roots can still compete for space, water and other nutrients

    Been using a 50 gallon aquarium filled with water in my 8x6 poly/Aluminum greenhouse, definitely helps with adding humidity and some ambient warmth at night. When it gets near and below freezing I add a heat lamp. Kept all ok thru last winter. Although doesn't get as cold here as there

  • @jaimecolley1345
    @jaimecolley1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also I’m liking your Delonix Regía! Puerto Rico is covered with red when they flower in the summer. They’re very brittle and unbalanced tree, they attract termites but have a lot of vigor and adaptability if you take care of them. They respond to pruning but aren’t keen to branching they do back bud tho if vigorous, keep at it and eventually it will branch once it does you can pinch the apex to balance the vigor of the lower branches that tend to die off. Tricky tree but very beautiful!

    I think those weeds are nitrogen fixing legumus plants, or something(remind me of shamrocks)🍀. My best freind and I as children, called them pickle plants, and ATE them, lol. Now, cuz of some video, I always pick them as they grow so my trees get the extra nitrogen (hopefully) I think it works, who knows, but the trees are healthy, and weeds hasn't taken over yet, but those things are everywhere! Delonix Regia sapling - since there are hardly any roots left after pruning, the leaves need to go too to reduce stress. i will be surprised if they dont turn yellow and fall off. i would just keep the leaf buds and 2 of the leaf stalks cut in half.

    What do you do with your apple tree during the winter? I started 2 apple trees in pots this spring and I'm not quite sure where they should be when the -30 and -40 degree weather hits. I may bury the pots in the garden but I don't know if that's necessary

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They should get some protection in winter anywhere below -18 C. Putting them in the garden is a good choice as long as they are protected from mice and rabbits. They love the sweet apple taste! A cool garage or basement is a good option too.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is a strong light, but the tree has to be very close to the light to match the light outdoors. I tried the solar fans out under it and they had to be about 50 cm from the light to turn both fans. This is about the same light I get in the plastic greenhouse on a sunny day.
