  • After 2 1/2 years, my collected Douglas Fir trees are strong enough for the bonsai work to begin!
    I'm also starting a large Jade bonsai from a really old cutting.

    Wow Nigel , I’ve been watching you a good 3 -4 years now and I still nearly die when you cut these huge parts of the trees off 😳, but I totally know that you know what you’re doing after all the years 👍, I just need to get brave and do it to some of mine . Keep being fabulous Nigel !! The big Doug photos make me sad , but he survived , brave person who left that standing amounts the carnage around it , hats off to the good people in the world , Nigel included

    I know you don't like wire but every time I see your tree s I see so much more potential if wire was to be used ,for example straighten up that fir with wire not a stake its not a flower. Love you stuff thanks

    I enjoy your videos. I live out in western WA, we have primarily doug fir here. I have lots of seedlings in my yard every year. I think based on the size of the trunks you could run some guy wires on those firs and shift them to a more upright position in about a season or two.

    Just very patient hard work, loving plants, making them healthier, just beautiful. I don't have many pots so I'm growing three, four types of plants in one pot, corner ones don't grow straight they twist n look like horns of a ram from afar. I think bonsoi can preserve uncountable tees in small areas, so it is very valuable

    It's likely that the damage to the one side of the one tree was caused by something scraping against it. this would bruise the bark something like skinning your knee if you take a spill on your bike. counting the rings on a tree like that doesn't give you the age of the tree. all you know is that the portion you cut off is seven years given the hieght of the remaining tree I would say the actual tree is closer to 20 years old.

    This would be a great time for you to finally do some wiring. I know you're more of a clip n grow type but being so struck on that mentality limits your bonsai experience and I think you're missing out. I mean you build a temple so wiring should not be a big deal.

    Nigel, You could wire them in to reduce that weight. Why do you pinch the tips out instead of just cutting them off shorter??

  • @paulagoller7893

    Like the Doug firs. Learned a lot about pruning, but wondered why you leave the dead branches. Aesthetics?

    I hope you leave the dead tree in the PNW it is called a snag and is very natural. I wish you would have someone operate your camera so i could see what you are doing, I am trying to learn. The narration is a great help. Thank you for your vids Mary

    To reduce energy among the vigorous branches how does one decide to pinch or cut?

    • @dk2614
      @dk2614 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can allow me to answer. When you prune or pinch you are doing so with the future design in mind. Pruning larger branches might mean that you are trying to slow them down a lot more than simply pinch so that hopefully all the braches and foliage pads reach the desired image at the same time some time in the future. Pruning on ever greens has to be done always keeping foliage on the branch since very few will regrow with all the foliage removed from the branches.

    That scaring on the fir tree looks a lot like cicada damage that has healed over. Last year we had millions of them here and that looks like the damage they did to a lot!! of my trees, though i haven't seen it on conifers except a bald cypress I have, it was mostly deciduous. Also they always seem to do the damage on the under side of trunks or branches. If you google cicada damage images you could probably tell if that is what it is or not.

    Every time i see your root rake i think of Miraculix , the wizard guy from Asterix and Obelix.
    He also had his much loved level 99 boss garden tool.
    Do you know there is a forum , or such , for your root rake ?
