  • In previous videos, we looked at part of the amazing vintage guitar, amp, microphone, and studio preamp collection of Steve Wilson, former amp tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, and his good friend Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters. Previously, we got to play Greg's 1958 Gibson Les Paul Standard "Hank" Burst through a 1956 Gibson GA-20T amplifier, see some 1930s and 40s era Ludwig WFL drums, and some amazing amps. In this episode, we'll dive even deeper into Steve's collection and start pulling out some more vintage guitars and amps, including an original 1952 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top and a 1959 Fender Strat. Buckle up for another incredible journey down the ultimate gear rabbit hole!

My buddy here in Eastern Kentucky has a '53 Gibson single cut Prototype with P90s - purchased from the Army commissary when he was in the military. He installed a compensated bridge in place of the trapeze bridge. It's the best playing/sounding guitar I've ever played and I'm a Fender guy.

Greg Martin is as great of a human being as one can meet.
I had the pleasure and privilege of visiting with him many times during the 20 or so Dallas guitar show for Mark Pollock, R.I.P.
    Ed King too, R.I.P.
I remember Greg and me standing to the side of the stage at one Dallas show while Ed was jamming.
Ed’s wife/widow also is tops in my book.

You're spot on about the Marshall Artiste, Brad. I was working on one recently, and I thought it sounded great. Yes, it wasn't as overdriven as a 800 or 900, but that's what I liked about it. If I recall, it was a gain stage short of the equivalent, more popular Marshalls of the day, so it's more than a mod. As you know, the more gain stages involved, the more noise we add on to the original guitar sound.

Sorry I pressed the wrong button before I finished my post . That shop was McCormick's in Bath street where all the big bands would visit. A family music shop which is now sadly gone. At age 15 I would get off the bus on the way to work just to look in the window, nose pressed against the glass. Fond memories.

Brad, if you don't mind my saying this, I think you may have found a new direction in which to take your channel. You've already established yourself as a historian in terms of tubes amps, as well as your efforts to preserve them in working order; there is honestly no telling how many such treasure troves exist around the country. I fully realize that both your time and your budget are limited, but to the extent possible...more of this...please!

Guy had to sell his beloved gear to help pay for cancer treatment. That made me so sad! A damning indictment of the US health system. Feel so incredibly lucky to have our NHS in the UK . . .the gift that keeps on giving. Look after his gear man, it must have broken his heart to sell them. May be a nice touch to do a short feature on what he sold to you? Thanks for these vids, so much rock n roll history found in places like this. I'd be like a boy in a toy store. Hi from the UK.

@Return of the Native Understandably so - I am 67, and people of my era believed that more was better. Our parents grew up in a bad depression and many lost everything, and had to start all over again after WW2.
The instruments that I buy are mostly damaged and cost me around a hundred for something worth fixing. I hardly ever sell anything for gain, I prefer to sell very cheap to a kid with musical talent but no money, or I just give it for free. I find that to be rewarding, and I hope other hoarders out there are doing the same.
In the early 1900's there were over two thousand piano companies in America. How many now? I see free pianos every day on CL, even baby grands. If you are a music lover that has to make you ill .What a waste.

The hairs on my arm became a magnetic force field when I saw that no serial number Les Paul...then...the two knob silver face Fender bass amp. Wow, I almost cried. I got one from the Guitarist of The Surf Punks in California in 89. I used that with an Ibanez Artist to record an entire album in 92. Those 60s era Marshall heads, wow. I haven't made it all the way through. The Fender amp I traded at Highland Music in Birmingham, Alabama for a local build Tube 45 watt dual channel samamp from when Sam was building one offs in 2006. No regrets, I still have the samamp and a Soldano cab. I got a Dr. Z Stang Ray in 2009 for my low watt gigs. I still have that too.

This is just like the guitar stores I grew up with. The internet killed most of those, and along with it, the internet killed the opportunity for a lot of younger players to experience the possibilities that are not products of the big box, super terrific, amazingly generic, stores of today. And if you noticed that little, practice, Fender amp...that no one is supposed to know about. Then you'll notice that the build quality blows away most of the crap on the market today, regardless of price or name.

@TheGuitologist. Hi Brad I've been watching you for about the same time as playing guitar . One year , loving it . And told myself find a guitar to be proud of when I can play . ( Self taught ? YT ... I can now riff and play my own songs ? ) LoL ok . Here's what I found .
    My New 1988 Fender® Graffiti Yellow Stratocaster® Plus. E 483451
This color was originally slated for the Jeff Beck Stratocaster and reportedly was based on the color of the hot rod in the movie American Graffiti.
2 Fender Gold LACE SENSOR #027666 / Black Pickups , neck and middle
1 Fender Red LACE SENSOR # 029761 Black Pickup , Bridge
LSR Roller Nut / Hipshot Tremsetter
/ The neck is dated 2/29/88 and is stamped S. BUEHL .
Always enjoy your content and opinions . Keep it up you have lots of support . And God bless you man .

Congrats on the Graffiti Yellow strat indeed! Closest GY strat I had was a partscaster with a HSS MIM GY body. The late 80's example remains in high reserve on my want list. The GY Powerhouse strat is a big WANT as well. John Milner's 1932 canary yellow Ford in American Graffiti is also one of my fav movie cars of all time. Enjoy that outstandingly exceptional score my man! Rite on and rock on! \m/

@@supersonicnomad8437 Hey Thanks Nomad I'm pretty humbled by it . I've seen it inside and out and most everything is solid , except someone's painted the pick guard black and no tremolo bar . Looks great but you know . Iv'e gigged for years (drums) so I have let a couple boys do a tuuun or twooo . IT SOUNDS GREAT !!! and (I think) plays like butter . wdi know . The same as them ....Shit dam nomad, I just looked bought like 15 guitars this freaking year . Don't tell the wife .... what did I just stutter ...? Aways I gave five away to the son in law and kids so they can enjoy music and three practice amps . I guess you know how it goes lol and all nice prices . Don't get me wrong but when I want to do something , I'll get to it . Dedication , Do It ! Lol Justify to the Wife , Circulate the design . Not a problem She married a drummer :) I Started with an 82 white (cream) strat Squire bullet ... a beautiful Cort CJ3V TAB acc. , and along came the McSwian2 cort gasoline i seen in the shop years ago ... Ruby red epi. dot CR , Ok no more unless quality something to work towards . So.. black 81 merica Strat , for a touch of Clapton . I was good . Oh A 68 Winston complete , placed a bit won it . A 91 Jazz bass and b/n Fender Rumble 40 for 500 . Couldn't pass it up ... 2017 merica red sparkle Tele .......88 Fender Strat yellow hmm that's a nice color . Then I looked it up . It was a Rush just thinking is it gone . He was asking top dollar . His wife knows my wife somehow and they moved here from Ukraine . I'm up in northeastern Canada . It worked out great $500 less and a nice tweed case . loll im playing each one as I'm writing this . Mmm I'm liking this Tele also . #itwaseasyasadrummer ♪┌|∵|┘♪ Sorry about the long reply Nomad \(°o°)/ from Drummer to New Gutiar Player . I feel like I identify as a 23 year old...(death metal) OUT TO ROCK THE WHOLE FUCKING UPSIDE DOWN WORLD . Pardon me , I kid I'm a kidder . You know I'm a Jester , so I jest . Ok is that all righ ? Baahaaa Man guitar players never shut up . So ya I snatched up a b/n 20 Harley Benton CST-24 Deluxe black flame for giggles and kicks $250 a month ago, and I've got to say gut it , tuners gigrig . Funny story as they are he he haha ho ho as I'm coming through the door with a 2014 Squire Strat .Aztec gold mim. ($200) my darling queen asks why he buy it ? What's that ... Oh he said it was the wrong color lol Then I told her ;) Crap it midnight here , can you help pack this up ? I guess I shouldn't have smoked the whole stick ? @@FLOODtoFIRE right on right on I can relate to a lot you were saying no question. I myself have been playing for 36 years while 37 this year started when I was 14 I had a month of lessons and after about a month and the chords g c and d I was listening to my records yeah way back when 33 and 1/2's, and I remember I'm pretty sure it was an Ozzy song with Randy rhoads in it and I was like wait a minute it sounds like he's going here and then here and then I started figure it out and come find out, I played by ear so I decided I didn't need no more lessons so I quit lessons after about a month and went on and learned everything else myself. They tried to teach me music in school you know notes that kind of crap I rejected it I refuse to learn it I didn't need it I could just listen to something and figure it out but I kind of wish now that I did study it and learned how to read music actually...Hindsight....you know ....20/20. Man I cannot even begin to go through all the guitars I've owned and amps and pedals...if I kept every guitar and amp and pedal that I owned I could open a couple Guitar centers and not go into bankruptcy you know what I'm saying? I've owned quite a few, quite a few... highlights of what I have now is I have a 2016 Epiphone limited edition Les Paul 1955 outfit it's the flat black one with Gibson p90s from the factory all gold Hardware, Gibson Lifton style case... brown with pink inside she's a stunner. And the other one is another Epi probably the rarest Epiphone that I've ever owned it is a 2003 Epiphone Les Paul classic 3. Three is designation for three humbuckers that's right three humbuckers on a classic model it's wine red with flame and they only made 177 of them they're quite quite rare I've only seen two others and one I believe is on reverb now but that one is a Heritage Cherry finish and the guy started out askin $1,000 for it.. I'm also known by my friends as the "Devil of Deals"... I swear to you I don't find these deals they find me...I have a knack for finding killer killer deals like that rare Paul I just told you about I traded a partscaster for that... a MIM partscaster! yes sir. But I've owned USA Gibson's USA fenders through the years I own a Gibson SGJ 2014 120th anniversary edition right now that I bought for $150....not a typo .....$150.... with case... But I'm at work now I could ramble on and on myself hahaha if you're on Facebook or something my name is Mark Sebella, hit me up with a friend request then we'll do some talking and did you really do that whole stick holy Christ hahaha right on and rock the F**k on brother! Keep that Rubberside down and that shiny side up! Catch you on the flip! 🤘

Wow, what history with those guys. I'm impressed Brad, you do know your stuff... I did sound for a local band in Langley, B.C. in the early 80's, re-wired the board to make it work right... then got into Satellite electronics and lost the "band"... Kids and stuff...
