Simplest series capacitor supercapacitor balancing techniques explained using DIY electronics

  • Capacitors and supercapacitors do not charge terribly well when connected in series. This will cause problems if one capacitor overcharges while charging, and/or if it is polarized, reverse charges while discharging due to the other capacitor feeding it current.

    I show some of the basic techniques used to help keep series capacitor voltage even and to use a semiconductor (LED in this case) to limit a maximum voltage.

    Thanks..How to determine which value resistor need to use say for two 30F Caps ?

      There's a lot of factors, for super capacitors you'd definitely want a high wattage transistor for each supercap that prevents it from overcharging in addition to voltage dividers that reduce the chance of them becoming unbalanced in the first place. The better the capacitors match each other in capacitance and leakage, the less current you have to waste trying to keep them balanced. Now that they have reasonable priced balancing modules for battery banks, I pretty much stopped thinking about these kinds of circuits.
