  • What's up, people! I'm back with another ABBA reaction from their 1977 album The Album, and this time we listen to the fantastic "Take a Chance on Me," a song I knew indirectly from the Erasure cover, and indeed, I thought I had already reacted to that cover, but as it turns out, I hadn't done it yet (but recorded it after this video). In any case, I was keen to hear the original, and wow, this did not disappoint. So join me for another shining (if subtly melancholic) masterpiece from ABBA. Cheers!

Björn came up with the lyrics to this whilst out jogging. He got a TK A CH rhythm from his feet and used that sound to come up with the phrase ‘take a chance’ and built the lyrics around that. Fun ABBA fact of the day for you.

So nice to see you again reaction to more ABBA songs in your ABBA Journey
"Take a chance on me" (1978)
is one of their best ABBA hits in all the world,
the most selling song of ABBA in U.S.
    (more than Dancing Queen),
    #3 in Billboard U.S.
one of their four Top10 in US :
    #6 Waterloo (1974)
    #1 Dancing Queen (1977)
    #3 Take a chance on me (1978)
#8 The winner takes it all (1981)
This is one of few song than the vocals are more extensive than the music (They begin 'a capela' and singing at the end)
the blonde singer Agnetha is the lead vocal in the solo verses, her voice is so powerful, in perfect armonies and chorus with the brunette Anni Frid in co-leads vocal (and the boys in back voices singing repetitive the frase 'take a chance, chance')
Agnetha & Anni Frid have fantastic voices and harmonies together
    Agnetha is soprano
    Anni Frid is mezzo soprano
and together made a 'third voice'
the guitarist Björn got the idea while jogging, by the sound of the footsteps he interpreted t-k-t t-kt and adapted it to "take a chance, chance, take a chance", so the song was born
Although it is a disco europop, it's like a constant and happy march, captivating, cloying, addictive
The official video was filmed on January 1978, a month after Agnetha postpartum (She was mother of her second child, with the guitarist Björn, in December 1977)
It's one of their most funny official videos
It begins with a zoom, like the old TV serie in US"The Brudy Banch" (and was used a lot un the social media for the COVID times)
    and one special comment
in the official site of ABBA there's a section of articles about some songs,
of "Take a chance on me" the tittle Is
    'the firewall of innocence'
I wish you a greatest week
    My best regards from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America

In 1992 the new interest in ABBA can be put down to 4 keys things
    1) Erasure ABBA EP which spent multiple weeks at No 1 in the UK charts
    2) the inclusion of ABBA music in the Australian film Muriel’s Wedding
    3) The including of ABBA music in another Australia film Pricilla Queen of the Desert.
    4) The release of a new ABBA Greatest Hits CD called GOLD bringing 19 songs on 1 Disc for the 1st time. This was possible due to ABBA whole catalogue now being under one companies jurisdiction.
ABBA GOLD which was 1st album to spend 1,000 weeks on the UK charts enjoying 3 spells at number 1 (1992, 1999 & 2008) and today it is still in the charts bringing their music to many new younger fans along with the musical Mamma Mia , the 2 films Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia 2 Here We Go Again and the Voyage Concert in London using digital version of themselves to perform along with a 10 piece live band.
Continue the great reactions there so much more to come and it does keep getting better and better.
Will be interesting to see what you make of the Album The Visitors and it is very different to what went before. And as a young fan in 1981 (10 years old) it took me a while to grow on me.

I think it's the first time in 1978 they used an accapella intro with "Super Trouper' following in 1980 ages ago before the likes of Pentatonix and Homefree made it a trend. This is one of their finest classics and the most jolly tune of the album.

Such a fantastic song. It’s very easy to get lost in the intricate arrangements of ABBA songs but that acappella at the beginning shows the harmonization talent those four voices have. This has always been one of my favorites from ABBA, a song that almost demands to be listened to from beginning to end. Thanks Matt! 👍

Great strong solo parts from Agnetha and then it just flows into the blended voices of the both of them. Typical ABBA in that the end of the song builds with the instrumentation from the synths and the additional background vocals from Agnetha.

The Erasure track lacks the harmonies created by the girls throughout and that's a big reason why the Abba original feels much richer. It's more dense harmonically in both voice and instrumentation. Vocally, both girls sing together through most of it except for one section which is Anna..."You know I've go much than I want to do.....etc" that's repeated again with different words in the second section.

Erasure's ABBA-esque EP and the film Muriel's Wedding pretty much singlehandedly (dualhandedly?) rehabbed ABBA's reputation in the early 90s. ABBA post-1982 occupied the third rail of music appreciation; in the late 80s where I spent most of my teenage, you didn't really mention your true ABBA fandom lest you relinquish your post-punk credibility. But after the craze over those two early 90s ABBA-related pop-culture moments, ABBA released the compilation Gold in 1992, which ..... well, let's just say it started the ball rolling for a wholesale artistic and commercial reevaluation. If it wasn't for Erasure, we probably would not be sitting here doing this right now. Their versions may sound a little.. thin? in retrospect, but that EP was such a turning point.

So well said Delius Lyndon.I would also add ( regarding my personal perception) i had the sense at the time, that things had slowly and gradually started happening by the very late '80s(late '87/'88/'89.There was a light Abbasick feeling.First tribute band Bjorn Again was a succesful opening to the door and also the Abba-ish vocals of the Stock Aitken Waterman movement was also reminiscent of the uptempo and more 'simplistic' '70s sense since things had started getting less 'serious' in the mainstream scene and people really wanted to have fun ignoring the previous 'darker' and 'heavily artistic'' post punk era of the early/mid '80s synth acts that had already worn out.

Risk taking with acapella vocals at the beginning ...
I assume they decided to add that during post production editing for an intro ( smart )
    The stand outs that made it a classic ;
Likely would have been discouraged by record execs in the U.S.
