  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another ABBA reaction, and since I already reacted to "Summer Night City" (the next track on the bonus disc for the expanded version of Voulez-Vous I'm going through), we're up to "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", a song I knew well before this deep-dive but that hit me even more powerfully in the context of a reaction. So join me for a tune that was already special for me, but now bears a lot more meaning when I say that. Cheers!
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

Agnetha's voice is like a cracking whip here. The pinnacle of their 70s output.
You are about to move into majestic territory, the Super Trouper era. Everything they've done so far is a precursor to their next album, a culmination of their combined powers. Do I overstate? Nope.

    What a pretty surprise!
This is the 'guilty song' of your entry into the 'ABBA world'
"Gimme gimme gimme (A Man After Midnight)" was released as a single after the "Voulez Vous" album and premiered on ABBA's 1979 North American and European tour.
It's a good disco song, made much more famous 25 years later when Madonna sampled it for her worldwide hit "Hung Up" (with the permission of the ABBA songwriters).
The official video is a reduced version, and it is the only one that shows ABBA in the recording studio, with its studio musicians and sound engineer Michel Tretow,
but in the last year ABBA released the new lyric videos for all the songs included in the 1992 ABBA Gold compilation album, and there we find it in its complete version
"Gimme gimme gimme" only reached #3 in the UK, but surely Madonna's sampling made it so famous that it is the second most viewed and downloaded ABBA song on TH-cam and Spotify (behind only Dancing Queen).
"Gimme gimme gimme" has no television performances, but live performances on the 1979 Tour (Frida dances in the instrumental solo) and on a 1981 TV special 'Dick Cavett meets ABBA'
and now in the new concerts of Voyage Concerts in London UK, which turned one year old this weekend and was attended by three members of ABBA (only Agnetha was missing), Gimme gimme gimme has a central place in the disco section of the concert
I hope to see you soon with the next ABBA
    now follows the seventh album
    "Super Trouper" (1980)
    my best regards from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
    South America

A real masterpiece of pop/disco again from ABBA! And yet again they made a song that has its own sound and special riff that makes it stand out as something you always will recognize as ABBA! No wonder Madonna wanted to sample this synth beat as the signature sound on her smash hit Hung Up! And only because Björn and Benny had a demo tape send to them by Madonna - and they liked what they heard, and because they agreed to split the royalties between them, she was allowed to use it! The rest is history - and I think a deal in favour of both Madonna and ABBA!
GGG, is still a song that is played in many discos and parties around the world today! It brings all to the dancefloor! So obvious why! Love it! ❤

This was actually the extra track on the greatest hits two album... long after the voulez vous album was released.
Its a beautiful gothic tale of longing and loneliness, and one of Abba's top ten songs IMO. I love the instrumental break as well, utterly superb song.

Yes, it was Madonna who got to sample that particular riff, in her song Hung Up. I believe Abba had literally never allowed anything to be sampled up to then, but Benny's reaction was: Hey, it's Madonna, how can you say no to her?!!
Love this song, always have, always will. The live version is very dynamic too and the video for that is great, with Frida showing off her dancing routine during the instrumental section.

It sounded so futuristic when I heard it at the time. There was about a 10 or 12 year gap between hearing it on the radio and having it on CD and that synth hook/tune stayed in my memory all those years.

"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" an Eurodisco/EDM track - one of ABBA’s best songs (great bass).
Top 5 song in at least 11 countries - #1 in 7 of those (including #1 on Europe Hot 100 and Japan International Chart).
The song has tons of covers (especially Heavy Metal ones) here are some of the most notables:
    Perla (1980-portuguese), The Sisters of Mercy (1984-live), Erasure (1986), Richard Clayderman (1993), A*teens (1999), Sinergy (1999-metal), Denise Van Outen (1999), Yngwie Malmsteen (2000-metal), Black Ingvars (2000-metal), Beseech (2002-metal), Tragedy (2013-metal), Cher (2018), Feuerschwanz (2022-metal).
The theme song for the UK sitcom "Gimme Gimme Gimme" (BBC-1999) ✌

If you see every album as an improvement to the album before, this song, for me, is the perfect ABBA, the band on the top of their game. It's genius, a masterpiece and an all-time classic. Everybody gets up on the dancefllor when the first notes get played. This being the peak doesn't mean that it goes down from here. The next album is also part of that peak, imo, so you can look forward to that. I feel that ABBA at that time had achieved everything they wanted to achieve and after that just did what resonanted with them and in doing so became a more grown-up ABBA that's complex and deep.

Well personally i never thought of it as an improvement. For me it was more of an expanding, creative progress and effort to expirement.Abba was never boringly repetetive since no album sounded the same to its previous.

If this wraps up Voulez-Vous, you are now heading into 1980's Super Trouper. This album, in my opinion, is their masterpiece. Not a single track feels out of place. From the heartbreaking "The Winner Takes It All" to the dance floor anthem "Lay All Your Love On Me" and everything in between. Hopefully you'll include "Put On Your White Sombrero", which was left unreleased until '94. ENJOY!

Not sure if you’re doing the bonus track Dreamworld or waiting until later on as that was first released in 1994. Either way, Super Trouper beckons. ABBA were now masters of their own studio and some of the best synths in the world. I think they tried out every button and gadget in the studio. It’s remarkably produced.

This is the longer 'better' version of the song. The 'original' single version is shorter but there is a very nice 'original' video version of the shorter one. As someone said before, there is also a great live video with Frida dancing, which was shot at Wembley arena (I think). Then, recently, ABBA released a 'lyrics version' of the video, using the long album track with the previous video material, which by the way was filmed in their studio. Complicated?

Matt, a new stage in this ABBA's journey, the album "Super Trouper", is about to begin.
And while I see how the views of your reaction to "Gimme gimme gimme gimme"
(apparently much awaited by the fans) are flying in a few hours,
I leave you a query, without haste or exigency
So far you made the albums with the bonus tracks, but you had a few songs left over.
Two are from the first album: "Santa Rosa" and "Marry go round".
And another one is from the third album: a meddley of three songs that ABBA did,
the only songs that they recorded without being their own,
and they are "Pick a bale of cotton / On top of old smokey / Midnight special".
(I understand that if you didn't make them it's because they were not included in the material you had available).
    They are part of ABBA's discography, but they are not relevant, for your peace of mind;
and in fact, I don't like them very much, but for honesty with everybody I must mention them).
    Now, going back,
between the albums "Voulez Vous" (April 1979) and "Super Trouper" (November 1980)
    ABBA released two more albums:
a compilation, "Greatest Hits 2", along with the 1979 tour,
which included the new single "Gimme gimme gimme gimme",
and was #1 in the UK, ABBA's fifth consecutive
(after "Greatest Hits 1", Arrival, The Album and Voulez Vous)
and a Spanish album "Gracias por la Musica" (1980)
released in some special markets like HispanoAmerica and Japan,
for which Agnetha and Frida specially recorded the old ABBA hits in Spanish language,
helped for the phonetics by a Spanish journalist
and the lyrics by the Argentinean producers Buddy and Mary McClusky
(maybe for your future plans of continuity with the ABBA days
you could include their versions in other languages,
they have 15 in Spanish, and a few in Swedish, German and French).
By that time Björn and Benny made another trip in search of musical inspiration,
coming back with a couple of new songs
and the new Super Trouper sessions will find ABBA returning to classic pop,
but with more reflective lyrics and more mature music,
prioritizing Agnetha and Frida's vocals as separate lead vocals over songs
    with both of them sharing lead vocals for the whole song;
and will include one live song, from the 1979 Tour.
    1980 finds ABBA with far fewer television appearances than in the past;
    and they will make fewer official videos (only three songs, one also in Spanish);
Agnetha and Björn's divorce is legally consummated
(and will be the special inspiration for a song on the album),
but it also marks the beginning of the difficulties in Benny and Frida's couple
that will lead to their separation very soon after.
"Super Trouper" will give ABBA two #1 singles in the UK after two and a half years,
and will be the last of their nine in total (and another Top10 single in 1981).
It will also retain the new option of including two songs with their Spanish version
    for the Latin American markets
also in new reeditions included two bonus track too
In short, it will be a new season of growth in this journey with ABBA.

Another amazing dance track that sounds just as good today as when it was released. You can also see in which direction they're heading: while the song has some disco undertones, it incorporates a lot of synth pop elements that will carry over to the Super Trouper album.

"Hung Up" was released in 2005 and is the first single from Madonna's tenth album Confessions on a Dance Floor. The song is sampled from the Swedish pop group Abba's hit.... (and y cat is so cool, i have cat calling Pipen and she was a party cat, and she was with my friends all the time, with high music) And by the way i thing y have to the listen to the new song from Beetle and Rolling stones / so fucking good (2023)

Cheers, great call on that.

Last night I went to bed sharing that "The winner takes it all" had exceeded 1000 views
And today I wake up and see that "The winner takes it all" has already exceeded 1100,
it is flying into the ABBA playlist (it's already #20 in less than 100 hours)
But also now "Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)" also exceeded 1000 views
(that's why I post it here)
In total there are 25 ABBA songs that have exceeded 1000 reproductions, this is the new order:
    Ring Ring
    S.O.S.
    Knowing me knowing you
    As good as new
    Eagle
    Thank you for the music
    When I kissed the teacher
    I've been waiting for you
    Move on
    Angeleyes
    The name of the game
    Chiquitita
    I'm a marionette
    That's me
    One man one woman
    Money money money
    My love my life
    Summer night city
    Voulez vous
    The winner takes it all
    Take a chance on me
    Hole in your soul
    Fernando
    Dancing queen
Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)
And among all your musical reactions, this is its location, with a few modifications:
    #3 RingRing
    #4 S.O.S.
    #5 Knowing me knowing you
    #6 As good as new
    #7 Eagle
#11 Thank you for the music
#12 When I kissed the teacher
#15 I've been waiting for you
    #16 Angel Eyes
    #17 Move on
#18 The name of the game
    #19 Chiquitita
    #20 I'm a marionette
That is the effect of your ABBA journey
    Congratulations, MATT
    see you in next reactions,

Once you'll dive further into Madonna's catalogue you'll find out... But probably it's already in the comments. Nothing beats this full version original though. It was and probably still is a great gay anthem.
