    Dude! Out of probably 20 wiring videos I have checked out YOURS is absolutely THEE BEST, Forest Gump used to tutor me in school so I need a tutorial that’s easy to understand, I have Subscribed!

  • @truelion-rt6gd
    @truelion-rt6gd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Wow! Subscribed. Here's why this video was the best I found:
    He fully explains the relay #'s and meaning, then lays it out in a miniature-scale giving a birds eye-view of the whole thing on the table, overhead-style. Finally putting it to hookup test in the engine-bay. Dead on. This is a great tutorial. The best i've seen. You're a good teacher bro.
    What would of been a +plus -- show a metal-contact plate representing the car chasis/frame and then get it tested on a 12v battery (?) on the table itself with everything grounded to the plate.

    I know nothing of electricity or wiring and I was actually able to understand this video. My installation is a little more complicated (multiple accessories to one (4)switch pod) but I think I understand enough to attempt it now.

    I previously wired up 4- 4" LED lights on my Jeep on the window pillars with a nightlight harness that comes with them the harness has an in linefuse , relay switch, whith that being said . could I run my overhead 4 individual 7" spotlights to go to that same relay switch to the battery?

    How well will 14 gauge speaker wire work? Is speaker wire good enough to get good power to like a huge led light bar?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't recommend using speaker wire for anything other than speakers. Regular 14 gauge wire is so cheap there is no advantage to using anything else! Thanks of watching!

      AdventureDex from looking around I haven't found cheap regular wire I found on eBay 100ft of 14 gauge speaker wire for 15$ and for that price the the best I found was about 15$ for just 50ft can you give me link for some good 14gauge wire

    so i have a question although it might be a dumb question, so the ground for the light, the switch and the relay where do i connect them to? and the other connection of the switch where does that connect to?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment Hugo! The ground for the light needs to be connected to either the negative terminal of the battery or the metal body of the Jeep itself. The relay gets connected to the light and the battery and the switch. The relay controls how the power is distributed to the light. I have a video explaining how a replay works. Check out that video on my channel. Thanks for watching!

    Great video I'll be fitting my spots soon thanks, if I could ask a question regarding interior LED strip lights? are fitting interior led lights the same process as external? using an inline fuse a switch and relay? Or can these just be connected to existing interior lights? Would you have a video on interior led fitting, many thanks Shaun.

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Shaun G Thanks!! Yes the interior led are the same as exterior. I chose to just connect mine to the interior lights makes it easy to install and control. Thanks for watching

    • @anwatsadat6786
      @anwatsadat6786 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The low amperage draw of LED lights means you can connect them directly in place of your current incandescent light bulbs. They pull less amperage so adding a relay is way overkill. You already have a negative ground control switch which turns them on when you open the door or use the dash switch. Wiring a switch as shown in the video won't work, most cars use the negative side of the circuit to control inside lighting, it's exactly backwards from the video. In addition, not all relays are wired the same way, you need to make sure the diagram is the same as the one displayed. I would recommend just pulling out the current fixture, installing and wiring the LED directly to the red and black wires that are currently in the vehicle. Just check before you start soldering, LEDs are polar specific, meaning if you wire them backwards they won't work.

      AdventureDex Now I'm really confused. If I only have a two prong switch and don't need to run the #86 to it, then why would I even need a relay?
      The switch wouldn't even be ran to the relay at all so how would I even be able to turn them on or off with the switch?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The relay controls the switch. There should be many diagrams online for 2 prong switches. The only difference is your switch might not need constant power cuz it might not have an led indicator for off and on. Otherwise everything else is the same. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    the black wire is for ground is it?so the black from relay, black from light and black from switch is all crimped together and connected to the -ve terminal of battery,is it?and red wire from relay, and another red from switch crimped and connected to the +ve terminal of battery?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, worst case senecio is that you blow a fuse which can be replaced very easily. Thanks for watching!

    • @08redjenking
      @08redjenking 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AdventureDex blow fuse?really?no risk of jeopardize the car's wiring systems?or catches fire?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No that would be a worst case scenario! Thats why I always recommend testing with a V9 battery. If you are unsure, run your wires then use a 9V as your power source. If its not wired correctly nothing will happen then you can use the process of elimination to figure out what is wired wrong. It can only be a number of things. Hope that helps and gives you the confidence!

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! What you need to do is take off your headlights and locate the wire associated with the high beam function. Once you found that you can connect your LED to that wire. This is not exactly recommended tho because your light bar should be for off-road use. thanks for watching!

    AWESOME video! Thanks so much for sharing. I have a question... I have a Polaris Razor and I'd like to wire two LED spot light pods to one switch. Would I need to splice both wires to make this happen and if so, how thick of wire should I use? The amperage on these light pods can't be more than 2.5 amp each and there's a total of 4. thanks.

    May i ask a question? This is in regards to another wiring harness. So the led lights are off yet the switch light is on. How does this effect the battery? Does it cause any harm to the car while its off yet the lights are on? Is there anyway to wire it where once the car is off the lights are off? Thankyou.

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    While I appreciate the video, I'd like to stress soldering connections vs. crimping connections.
    In extreme or cold weather climates, snow, ice, salty, Sandy, grimy roads or long haul driving; crimps will get loose, dirty, and/or connections will oxidize and your LED's will stop functioning.
    I also solder all my wired directly to my relays,(saving money on prewired) and guaranteeing all of my connections for quite a long time. (I have some relays that are over 20 years old, and still working.)
    I suggest using this technique in Semi's watercrafts, planes, and all rough terrain vehicles, motorcycles, sidecars, bicycles, et. and any electrical connections, car alarms, lights, audio equipment....et.
    I reuse my relays, and keep the same colours as this video.
    If soldering onto the relay sounds good to you, use a wire brush to scratch off some of the copper covering on the relay tabs, preheat and put a dab of solder on it, then presolder the wire and quickly attach them together. Taking too long to solder can overheat the relay and create a lot of melting and mess. clean up your instal with tape or hot glue.

    Hi, great video! You are putting some light to this “obscure sorcery” ;) But I have one question. In another comment you say that the Switch Power (+) get connected to the Battery and also to the Ground (-) with a Fuse and Relay. Can you please explain a little more that. In the video I can see the Switch Negative goes directly to the Battery Negative but the Switch Positive… is not very clear, If you follow the Switch red cable to the end in top of the Batter, its a Relay? I can’t see any more cables from there. Thank you

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! Depending on your application and accessory... you would run the positive cable from your battery through the fuse and into the replay. Then from your replay to your accessory and to your switch. The negative can be connected direct from the accessory to the neg battery. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    • @SalvadorCalaf
      @SalvadorCalaf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, everything is clear except one cable in the Switch. If we focus in the Switch Power (+) Prong with the red cable, if you follow that cable is not going to you Battery +.

    Really good videos !
    Could you make another episode where you show how to go from the motor compartment to the inside of the car and then to the lower center dash ?
    I have bought a daystar lower center dash panel but no one explain how to reach this area with the switches !??

    great job !

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vincent Clerc Thanks for your comment. I do plan on buying the low dash switch pod and doing a video on that but that will probably be in the future. For now, I can try and assist you with your installation. The wiring should be exactly like my A pillar switch pod video so that you can watch. You can also see how I pulled down the entire dash and console in my Reverse camera video. To answer you questions tho, there are a few fire walls which are rubber seals which you can find between the engine bay and the interior footwell. If you lift your hood and look down at the top right of the back of the engine compartment, you will see there rubber seals which wires are running through into the interior. Those are the firewalls which you can access and use. once your inside the interior you can easy fish the wires under the carpet and behind the plastic trim till it receives the lower dash. I hope this help! Thanks for watching!

      What a cool answer ! thanks for the tips. I actually did not shoot fot the A-Pillar installation because I thought the switches would be to bright in my vision at night. Some switches tend to leack a lot and disturb the night vision. This is why I think the lower dash panel is a better location.

      +Luca Alfred Thanks for the positive comment bro! You can wire your switch to the ignition so it would only have power when the ignition was on BUT keep in mind if you were out on the trail or camping you couldn't use your lights or accessory unless your ignition was on. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    I have a question. How can I modify your setup if I wanted my LED bar to turn on when I switch my high beams on? Is it possible to control the led bar using the high/low car switch?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DJCARBON2012 thanks for the comment! That is a really good question. What you need to do is identify the wire on ur head light that sends power to your high beam bulbs and steal power from that source. So when your high beams are on, power will also be distributed to ur LEDs. Thanks for watching! Don't forget to sub!

  • @brianrourke3722
    @brianrourke3722 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You connect the 86 wire through a switch to the orange wire on the rear of your headlight....the dipper switch wire. it is live when you activate the dipper switch on the steering column. when you require to use the LED light bar flick the switch on in the cab. nothing will happen until you hit the dipper switch. if you just need to use the normal high beam head lights turn the LED bar switch of. Never wire your LED light bar to the ignition switch wire. Your head lights are not wired to the ignition circuit. you can turn your light on with out having the ignition on. On Spot lights the 86 lead is called the trigger lead. the 30 an 87 are for high current draw up the the value of the relay 85- 86+ are for low current draw switching. Hope this helps.

    By discluding the white wire ( 87a), the relay switch is constantly on which makes the relay pointless except the fact that it turns down the amperage. So all the relay is doing at this point is keeping your light bar at 40 amps. Isn't this correct? Shouldn't the switch be ran from the battery, then to the relay? It would also be more versatile by including 87a as an option for a light or whatever the installer feels fit.

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, we might have a different understanding but the relay controls the switch. The switch doesn't control the relay. They relay acts as the mechanism that allows the switch to be on or off. I am sure there are more than 1 way to do it. Ill keep it in mind. thanks for watching!

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +25falcons Thanks for the comment! I would always recommend using a wiring harness that has a fuse and a relay but it is safe to wire LED's straight to the battery but how would you operate them without a switch? Thanks for watching!

    • @25falcons
      @25falcons 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought the rigid industries duallys kit, so it already comes prewired and has a fuse and a switch, so I am able to turn them on and off whenever I want. So I should be okay right? I just don't want the LEDs to drain my battery

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +25falcons Yeah connect them directly to the battery through the wiring harness. The LED's won't kill your battery. LED's don't draw that much power, as LED's are very energy efficient! Thanks!

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +25falcons Yes, you can wire them all directly to the battery. I always suggest using a wiring harness with a fuse and relay but it is not always necessary. Thanks for watching!

      AdventureDex with the switch. A relay is nothing but a switch too. It does nothing for you unless you want your toggle switch to turn something else on. It’s a coil that closes two or more contacts. This guy thinks it protects the circuit, false. That’s what a fuse is for. 12 year Master Electrician and contractor.

    Awesome video! So how did you run power to the switch? straight from the battery? and I'm assuming all the grounds got wrapped together and just grounded to the frame?

  • @rickd248
    @rickd248 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Strictly for my own edification, why are you going directly to the battery. There should be a couple open circuits (at least one) in your fuse block. That would have the advantage of going through the ignition switch. If the ignition isn't on, neither are the lights. That is a battery saver. Now, I had one of the first TJ's. That was probably 12 to 15 years ago. I have not even looked at the new Wrangler so all my information is from the first of the old TJ series. I really enjoy your videos. I'm watching them to get ideas for thing I want to do to my wife's Liberty. I have a 2015 GC Overland with the 5.7 Hemi and the really good running gear and air suspension.

      +rickd248 Thanks a lot for the comment! the capacity for the fuse and the cable are related , you need to protect the cable using the fuse , so if you are going to wire these light you need to know the amp that the light is going to consume. So if these light is about 50 or 60 watt you could use 7.5 or 10 amp fuse and after that the capacity of the cable should be higher than the fuse.

    How many of these can SAFELY be connected to a motorcycle - a dirt bike - with a standard 12v motorcycle battery? Multiples of these lights would of course not be street legal, but my interest is for OFF-ROAD, and I want one light down the middle as an ultra-bright main headlight (and please tell me if there are EVEN BRIGHTER than these I can use), but I ALSO want one on EACH SIDE, if not pointing exactly 90 degrees sideways, perhaps in a 45 degree angle to get a VERY WIDE FIELD of light. That may sound crazy, but where I live, I do a LOT of night riding in the wilderness, and we actually have bears and INSANE DEER that won't only run out in front of you, but that will actually CHARGE YOU from the SIDES. SCARY! And I have been hit before, and I've totaled many cars on them as well, so, how many of these can a STOCK 12v motorcycle electrical system handle?

    • @adventuredex
      @adventuredex  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Hacker Thanks for the comment Steve! I also appreciate you watching however I am not 100% sure how to answer your questions. I don't know that much about motorcycle so It would probably better to ask someone who does or maybe check the forums. It might also be a cool idea instead of using headlights, you use smaller LED's that can be mounted to your motorcycle. Maybe you could mount two 4" LED's and have them on a separate switch for off-roading or night riding. Hope that helps! Thanks
