    I haven't built a balsa model for over 45 years! I love foamy's, but this one seems to be a good assembly Job, and it looks quite solid too! the last time I covered a plane it was with tissue paper and dope, I've never owned an iron or done iron on coatings, but this model is tempting me..... great vid thanks for sharing :-)

      I started with wood back in the 80's . Had a lot of foamies over the last 5 years or so. But nothing flies like wood ;o) covering is easy once you learn a few tricks. The only issue with this kit is the lack of detailed instructions. Cheers Rob

      I had started the Carl Goldberg Anniv Ed. Cub many years ago but never finished it and ended up getting rid of it, in fact. Now that kits are scarce to find at best or you find molded planes from styrofoam cups I really regret that decision.

    Best to leave the fuselage top off until you have fitted the servos to give youself more room to work. The servos can be hidden by moving them down to the fuselage bottom leaving the cockpit clear for a pilot.

    Hi guys, have considered this kit from HK in the recent past but chinned it of after some of the poor quality cheap chineese kits ive had from HK. however, this looks alot better than previous releases and I reckon if you bin the undercarriage and make a few other mods along the way it could turn out to be an OK offering. I shall follow your build with interest before i hit the "buy now" button!

      Its looking good so far. The U/C and the struts could do with being made lighter. But from what ive seen they seem to fly ok...

    • @JimGDMAC
      @JimGDMAC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fly one of these with an SC52 four stroke and it flies very well. It balances with the Rx battery under the fuel tank and needed no added weight. Don't bother lightening the undercarriage, it works well and making it lighter would need nose weight added to get the CG right. The struts could do with being replaced not so much for weight but looks. I finished mine as a Piper Flitfire to give a very different looking plane.

    Hi Rob,
    i guess the J3 is cub a good kit for beginners. I want to start to build my first balsa plane and i think i have made my decision.
    thanks for all your tips and advice

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its NOT a good plane if you have little or no flying experience...

      @b_hills 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Rcmodelgeeks I do have years of flying experience and i have flown the j3 cub before.. You are right, especially tip stalls can be dangerous, but after a little practice it is so much fun.

    G'day RCMGs...Nice work Rob, it looks like it'll be a nice easy build.
    You thought of a colour scheme yet ?...apart from a Pussy Pink Piper (I am in touch with my feminine side but she isn't talking to me atm) a Pied Piper comes to mind.

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh yes i know exactly what colour its going to be ;o) Just remembered i forgot to wear my pink shirt for the Autogyro maiden. Oh well maybe for this one ;o)

    Hi Rob...just started building mine,,,,just a quick question as to the battery tray,, i.e the ply top..it shows it slids into slots on the the sides...is this glued in place,., or have i missed something,,or do i need another beer,,,lol...thanks Rob

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think i made it so i could remove it if i needed to. I think i stuck a piece of balsa across the back of the tray to stop it sliding out, but you could break away the piece of wood, if you needed to remove the tray ...

    What glue are you using Rob? I was thinking exterior wood glue would be a good choice

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use CA then fillet the joints with wood glue. and epoxy for places that need strength for example the firewall

    Hello there, i have got a Question: What is the difference between a J3 and a PA18? I already tried and googled for it, but i could not find a satisfiying answer up to this day. I hope you can help me on that.

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Main difference is a bigger engine! and a slightly shorter wingspan.

  • @sjanninck
    @sjanninck 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Really coming together well!
    Question.
    Are you using epoxy or CA glue?

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A mixture of... CA, wood glue and epoxy. General method i use is CA the thing together then fillet all the joints with wood glue. i use epoxy anywhere that needs extra strength (firewall, root ribs etc)
