Lofi music can be an absolute walk in the park to make! Lower the stakes, open up Ableton, and try piecing some cool sounds together. The best producers are the ones that produce on a regular basis - so if you want to improve you need to take action. Lofi is pretty much as simple as it gets, and by the end of this video you’ll know exactly how to make lofi music like a pro in ableton! Little secret…it’s all in the processing on the master chain.
Comment any questions or feedback, I try to read all the comments and respond when I can!
Thanks so much for watching, truly.
Cheers
Ethan
I have been producing in Ableton for 5 years and trust me this video would have meant the world to me when I first started. More than explaining the process of a lofi beat you explained the mechanics of ableton, all those small tricks and tips and shortcuts. You understood the assignment and clearly you have experience on what things people struggle the most when getting the hang on moving through Ableton interface. Keep up with the good shit!
is ableton enough to create good lofi
@ for sure! Any daw will do. If is just a matter of how you feel around it
As a fellow producer and electronic music teacher, when potential clients can't necessarily afford to be in the room with me to get instruction, I always send them to your page. Always giving such a wealth of knowledge. Lol with yur page and some real internal motivation, folks really don't need to go the college route like I did. Keep on keeping on brutha!
This man is the Bob Ross of Ableton. Your videos have been helping me since I was a beginner. Good stuff man.
I’m honored to be compared to Bob Ross
These videos are great, Ethan! I do want to point out that the bpm is really 85, but setting it to 170 and doubling the space between notes on the grid makes it feel like it's 85 bpm. I'm not trying to be pedantic, but I thought others might need an explanation if they're new to music production. If there's a reason for doing it this way, then please let me know. I'm certainly open to hearing new approaches. I'm thinking it's so that you can keep the grid in "8th" notes. I put it in quotes because it's meant to be quarter notes because a bar is four quarter notes. lol, okay. I think that I just answered my question. I think it's purely for the visual of being able to see the samples on the grid without seeing a bunch of extra lines.
I’ve been producing in Ableton since 7 while I was in college. When I hit a writers block I come back to “beginner” videos like these to find a new way to approach the software. I almost never use stock plugins and I don’t drag drum samples directly to the grid, but just trying out different approaches that seem like they wouldn’t make a difference can mix up things just enough to get over something like writer’s block. Thank you for this.
I finally bought my Ableton Live Standard and this video is exactly what I needed to start playing around after using the Lite version for a while. Thanks!
I believe that the best for lofi instruments are the carefully created synths, with some envs and lfos on fin, amp, warp, with the right wavetables
I watch a lot of youtube video’s and lately starting to uderstand and like making beats more. This video is a big help and reason why i will keep going on loving making music. Thankyou!
This was by far, one of the most engaging beatmaking videos I’ve watched on youtube. You explain things so well🙌🏾
thanks so much!
grateful for this- been producing since 2012 and haven't found any lofi videos like this since
adding to the praise, I am day two into using Ableton. Many thanks, I've gone through the onboard tutorial and as nice as it was being able to try and replicate what you are doing and messing up and fixing it has been invaluable. Again thanks.
I followed along and made my own lo-fi beat. Actually my first beat ever! I'm so proud of myself and thank you for this great video. Very informative. I'm considering taking the producer pro course. I'm gon' make it out the hood with this one! lol
Thank you, Ethan. I made my first ever beat because of you.
Thank you so much! I learned a lot from this

Thanks so much man !! Your vids are always top quality and straight-forward. Way more concrete and useful than some 30min videos where it feels like you don't retain any practical information at the end haha
This video helped me out so much at 30 years old, god bless you , subbed and liked
Hi Ethan I just like to let you know that (what I know about) you and your content are amazing! you put it very simply and understandable to us who wanna learn, the way you speak and guide through your videos is so warming and the content itself is so rich!! These videos have been solid. Love the genre breakdowns
Would be great to see a tutorial on how you take this initial idea and turn it into a fleshed out full track with parts. Thanks for the content!
Thank you so much for all the useful information Ethan! This was a real MasterClass.👌

If you want to mention that bass is hard to hear on mobile or speakers, it could help more people understand. Thanks for the upload!

Great vid…. Very informative …. I never had a clue about that nudge feature 🤯
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tips!
Hey Ethan. Great video. May I suggest for your next video or any later arrange this idea into a full song? I’m sure many new producers like myself struggle quite a bit turning their ideas into full songs.
nice! thank you
I love that sh.. 🙂. All your videos are so inspirational! THANK YOU!
I'm off now to create some music, ... bye bye ;-)
bro wtf best timing ever
Honestly the best production channel

Where is Drum Hits Ethan? Do I need to download it? I am a newbie and currently learning how to make some nice background music on Ableton. I am on the Trial Live 11 version so not sure if it has Drum Hits? Any help would be appreciated!
Hellow! At first, sorry for my english if i do some mistakes..
i was wondering.. i startedt to produce/make musik with ableton, and when i'm clicking on the "drums" category.. there is nothing sorted or organized - just a whole list ._. i felt lost a little bit..
How do i set the drums "categorized" ?
I can't find the d in 4:11, how can I find it
How do you zoom in so easy on tracks in the arrangement view? With the Magnifying glass? D;
click and drag up or down
@@sweetpeahunnybee thank you!!
TBF 4:10 in my ableton i dont notice any difference even when sliding to the max
i came for the lo fi, I stayed for the shortcuts
13:33 I can see myself in the chair.. figured out no solution to this day.. wireless headphones? idk
my ableton looks different. I got version 12 lite.

go to "view" then "arrangement track controls"
I don’t see the d in the bottom right for the delay
I didn’t either but I figured out it was because I was in the newest version live 12.. unfortunately I couldn’t figure out how to find it and just ended up going to ableton live 11 and it was there
go to "view" then "arrangement track controls"
Theres some really good tips in here dont get me wrong... but im so tired of people calling lo fi hip hop "lofi". Lofi is just an umbrella term for music that incorporates low fidelety sounds, theres no such thing as a "good lo fi tempo" lmao. The lofi music i make doesnt even have drums most of the time, and its mostly vaporwave. Theres lofi hip hop, lofi ambient, lofi rock, lofi techno, lofi house, lofi vaporwave, lofi punk, lofi metal, and those are just the genres i know of. literally any genre can be lofi if you mix it that way. Just put lofi hip hop in the title god damn
YOU HAVE A TH-cam CHANNEL????????????? All this time I thought u only made music hahahahaha
i do both!
The way I make Lofi is complicated AF. Also, it’s not really Lofi so much is hi-fi 90s boom BAP with modern production sensibilities and a modern twist so I guess it’s not Lofi at all.. anyways, I’m always into different production ideas and if I ever want to make my stuff sound worse, I might look into Lofi lolz
I’m kidding I’m joking , or am I?
Great video, you are the man
