  • Dr David Solomon Jalajel is a researcher with the Prince Sultan Research Institute at King Saud University, in Saudi Arabia. He holds a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of the Western Cape. Formerly, he was a lecturer in Islamic theology and legal theory at the Dar al-Uloom in Cape Town, South Africa, where he graduated and then received the higher specialisation in Islamic Law and the higher specialisation in Arabic.
In this video David speaks about Sunni Theological Hermeneutics. That is, he discusses the methodology that Muslim scholars in the classical Sunni tradition have used to interpret scripture for establishing matters of binding religious doctrine or Aqidah.

Thanks brothers Paul and David. Another excellent production. The main take-away from this for me was "if you don't know, don't guess, just say you don't know". We get the typical questions in the examples of Tawaqquf in dawah a lot, mostly from existing Muslims. So much time and effort many people waste wondering about such things that are of no concern nor would the knowledge of the answer benefit them.

The more we know, we realize how little we know. This leads to humility. And when it comes to theology or divine scriptures, integrity becomes all the more important. How much consciousness of God, fear of God, love of God, hope and trust in God and self-restraint it takes to not project one's own interpretations and assumptions onto the Divine Text. It is extremely tempting to vindicate one's own assumptions but it takes a lot of piety and righteousness not to do so because then that wouldn't be the truth. It would simply be deluding oneself. This is such a masterclass in hermeneutics. Kudos Br. Paul for researching and taking pains to organize such seminars. I'm not a theologian, I'm a software engineer but I can appreciate how superior theology is and what kind of self-discipline, God-consciousness and love of God it takes to dedicate oneself to its study.

Hey Paul, you said "It takes a bit of guts to actually say ' I don't know." I agree. I don't know if it's necessarily "courage" for me to say "I don't know" but I do understand my knowledge is minimal, especially regarding God, Islam, the prophets and Jesus. Life seems to be just too short to absorb and understand everything about God. Yet ironically, God does understand everything about His creation.

Another classic after the last one on qadr by brother Paul and his guests.
The ending(the Razi 'perception') if I may call it that, I must say left some of us with much to ponder and where we end up, I pray that Allah save us and makes us steadfast on the middle course as well as the straight path onto Himself.
But I hope to ask Dr David question regarding the authentic narration where Allah says amongst other things that 'He is time'. I would like to know the discourse of these scholars especially Razi on this.
A lot of information to ponder, but I implore brothers and sisters not to make general conclusion on our own to avoid falling into error and disbelief; waiyyaz billah, after all it is aqida---its more or less always WYSWYG.

In the case of doctrine, supporting evidence must be definitive in terms of authenticity and clarity.
However, in matters related to lawful and unlawful there is room for uncertainty. In other words, overall evidence to make a decision does not have to be conclusive but must be persuasive. This is logical.

Islamic theologians are of two types Sunni and Shia theology. Jalajel explains some of the topics. I am a Sunni but I am confused why the prophet's descendants supported the Shia, who went on to make the Islamic golden age, while the Sunnis only conspired to oppose and stop Islamic progress. It seems to have direct bearing on what the scriptures say (not discussed by Jalajel), that his followers should go to distant China to gather knowledge (misinterpreted by Sunnis who claim all knowledge is in the Quran and scientific investigation is not required) someone is at fault. However, if you try to call for Shia theologian, maybe some of the confusion can be removed.
Paul, I think you should expose the history of post-prophet developments, it shouldn't be difficult to decide who is wrong/ Please, expose the two theologies, so Muslims can decide why they are divided unable to unite. This is the most important favor you can di to Muslims. Thank you.

Unfortunately, theological and heurmenetic methods are not significant in Islam. Even so far Islam does not need them. Islam was revealed in a solid structure with a homologous combination of its elements and makes it always compatible in every context of the cycle of time. So, if there are some elements that invade and distort some concept, it will be very easy to detect.
Rasulullah salallahu 'alaihi wasallam inherited us a theory called bid'ah, which is a method for how to detect new elements outside of religion that intrude into the structure and damage its homologs.
Admittedly, theology and hermeneutic will only provide a strange explanation about Islam.

It seems to be taking about the ascetic practices of the christians, mainly the fact that they discarded every human contact instead of using the retreat then sharing the knowledge they earned on the scripture.
Considering the following part "We did not ordain it for them-only to seek God's approval. But they did not observe it with its due observance". It shows that what they did has taken precedence over "seek[ing] God's approval". So it must be a matter of practice and not faith that is in question here. The use of "ordain" also shows that it was a command rather than a point of belief.
If we take the ascetic practices, or monasticism as a whole as the subject of critique here, it can be easily understood why Allah speaks about it in harsh terms. Don't we have the result of said monasticism nowadays? The monks and priests do not marry, so they turn to children to satisfy themselves, may Allah curse them. The damages this practice has done are innumerable, and many have forgotten God because of those deviants who forbade what God allowed and prescriped.
I hope this answered your question, I'm not learned in the tafsir regarding this specific subject so I hope you'll take my opinion with tact, as it is merely an opinion.

    As salam alaykoum.
I precise I just watched the beginning.
"Salafism" didn't started with ibn taymiyyah. It started with our prophet and his companions. It's just a most precise word used to describe the original Islam, the orthodox islam.
The reason why we don't use the term "sunny", it's because deviant sects use this term, like ashary and maturidy. Because a sunny it's someone who refers to Quran and sunna. But what distinguish orthodoxy from heterodoxy, it's the understanding of the salaf (the 3 first generations of islam). This is why we say that we are "salafy" (those who refer to the salaf).
Every deviant sects will pretend to follow Quran and sunnah, but nobody will understand this two sources like our prophet, his companions, the tabi'in (students of the companions), and atba at tabi'in (their epigones).
And no, DAVID SOLOMON, the difference between salafy (or sunny, or ahl al sunnah, or ahl al sunnah wal jama'ah, or ahl al hadith, or ahl al athar) and ashary/maturidy is not a minor issue. The one who has the creed of ashary or maturidy is out of orthodoxy, or worst.

Like i said, salafism is orthodox Islam. Do you agree with me that Allah only accept the Islam of our Prophet and his companions : same manhaj (methodology), same aqida (creed/doctrine), same ibadah (worship), and same legislation ? This is the definition of salafism (or orthodoxy, if you like an english word). I think you are mixing the word "salafism" with the word "salafy" (the one who follow the salaf). Why we are obliged to say we are salafy and not only that we are muslims (like in the time of our prophet) ? It's because deviant sects appeared through islamic history, like shiism, kharijiism, qadarism, asharism, maturidism, and so on... All those groups deviated from the original Islam, specially in aqidah (creed) and manhaj (methodology).

He also claimed ( through tawakuf) that somewhere through the human evolutionary process Adam / eve’s offspring had intercourse with apes / Neanderthals and the human race branched out from them - saying this to try and rationalise (using tawakuf) or bridge the gap between Darwinian evolution and creationism.
I’m not a scholar - but I think too much tawakuf and philosophy hurts the brain and the heart.
Understanding core theological concepts shouldn’t require scholarship and 5000 hours pondering on the many possibilities of a verse……
it should be simplistic to understand and not confusing and hodge podge……..
God isn’t the author of confusion; I left Christianity because of the false narratives regarding the trinity, the original sin, the lack of answers to our modern day problems and mostly the understanding of GOD and the hereafter.

There's only 1 (ONE) individual IBLIS.

Now every verse in AlQuran that relates Adam AS and The SATAN is referring to that one IBLIS or that specific individual SATAN.
