    I really like your way of explaining new builds. I just found your channel a week ago and now i am completely obsessed with your series.

    I definitely appreciate your tutorial style of explaining your builds. I think I will give this a try in my colony, I have yet to take on the whole petroleum boiler thing.

      Mine did the sour gas thing too. I reloaded, dropped a tonne of oil then set the automation. Bang worked perfectly.

    I was excited when I watched this. Just finished my first petroleum boiler and I also used the magma in a similar fashion. Not a big counterflow setup like this but I'm satisfied it's doing what I wanted for now and I completed it around cycle 400 or so. I pump petroleum into the room with the heat plate from two places. First, from the oil lake into my early metal refineries. I loop their outputs through automation to go back into the refineries until they are around 310C when it'll branch off and start filling up the boiler. Then when it's full of petroleum another door opens floods a side room with a liquid pump. My first try at this broke my steel pump 😅. But that mistake led me to the next version which has another pump in the lake that snakes it's way through the boiler to exchange the heat down to manageable temperatures

    I've always enjoyed the early game more than middle or late. I'm trying to push more into the middle game, but I'm not quite there yet! Still, when I'm to the point a petroleum boiler would be handy, I'll probably be headed right for this video to figure out how to build it! I'm glad you made a point of pointing out that it's just those two tiles that matter to melt the petroleum.

  • @briancloud9
    @briancloud9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    to prevent tat pipe busting there at the end just put the last three sections up on row so its not close to the heat. Wont really change how the boiler works but less likely to have those pipes pop at the end on that one. Also setup escher waterfall into infinite storage for all the massive excess of petroleum. can put it all in a space the size of a liquid pump.

    the 3000 kg of water would be a great point if the oil wells didn't have to stop for venting. since there is a pause in this, slicksters are required to fill the pause of the oil wells to keep the absolute 10 kg/s boiler going to service the 5 generators. otherwise, the oil will bleed away over time.

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points. Would be true for us if we were actually using the 10kg/s of petroleum. As it is we are only running the generators as required by our power, so we are left with extra. Don't think we are going to run a full 75 slicksters any how.

    @10:30 instead of the dispensers on the bottom where the stack is, put non-passable mesh doors. It'll "lock" the negative decor inside but the dupes can still reach the pile from outside.

    I always do it with a heatspike like that, I think using vulcans are too much trouble when you have a magma core.

    @NoMusiciansInMusicAnymore 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a really nice design, I might steal it haha, I think the only thing I would change is having the boiler plate not directly above the heat spike, as you mentioned, if you expand it you will have a hell of a mess to get through, if you moved the counter flow and boiler plate 2 squares to the right and 1 up you could leave the door below the boiler plate (that's there now) closed all the time, add 2 diamond windows to the right ot the top right of the heat spike, then another door and the boiler plate... I have no idea if that makes sense haha

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes perfect sense. Wish I would have thought of it first ;) As it stands I have a backdoor I am planning to use. Thank you for the comment.

    I used to do petroleum boilers. But ever since I realized how much easier and better it is to slap some steam generators over magma, I can’t be bothered.

  • @Pixelplanet5
    @Pixelplanet5 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think you would have had less problems with sour gas and the likes if you just pushed 10kg/s through the pipes as the larger mass getting in would have instantly provided enough mass that it doesnt flash to sour gas.
    Same goes for the slow ramp up in general, its only required if your heat source and transfer is weak, if you got a steel door and temp shift plates connected directly to a heat spike you can continuously pump in -30° oil without even having a heat exchanger at all and it will still all convert to petroleum instantly.
    Its not efficient and would require a thermium pump to get it out but it works.

  • @Thoron_of_Neto
    @Thoron_of_Neto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So this video is a bit older but as someone who was baffled by mid to late game ONI, I was struggling. These videos though are super helpful because though there's still some things that get missed, the general gist gets across to me. For some reason, temp shift plates made half sense before watching this series to this point. They now make sense to me, and why one would use them also makes sense. I don't know why I get it when you explain it, but there it is lol.

  • @pendensproditor
    @pendensproditor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That top row of the boiler is something I've realized can be a problem in my builds. The petroleum running through your top row is still in contact with big well of petroleum that's being heated. That means when you're cooling the top row with the oil counterflow, it's also cooling the big well, but the big well is so full of heat that it's going to win the battle. And that's part of why some of your final pipe segments were getting broken. What I do is add a lip so that the big well petroleum and the petroleum in the top row are never in contact (in other words, the petroleum has to fall off a ledge to enter the counterflow zone), and my counterflow pipe segments only contact the top row and never contact the big well. By doing it this way you'll also end up with cooler petroleum, because that top row of petroleum is really not being cooled (it's being cooled and warmed at the same time).

    all great and amazing, but why let liquid pump work w/o sensor?

    • @EchoRidgeGaming
      @EchoRidgeGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does the pump need a sensor? I kind of want it to pump everything. Curious as to what I'm missing!

  • @ericab3919
    @ericab3919 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can do a separated thermocouple. If you fill like 2 tiles with hydrogen you can put the thermo sensor in something that isnt the petroleum itself.
    This is actually the best vid I've seen on this type of boiler. The fact you purposely flashed it to sour gas to show how it could break was cool too.

    You can do the door drill trick with only two doors worth of steel. Recycle the upper door as soon as the lower door is built. When you're done drilling you have a lot less hot steel to cool back down too.
    You can also use the door Permissions options to achieve the same result as locking the doors.

    isn't it just pointless producing plastic using petroleum, if you can get the plastic from a glossy drecko farm much easier and right at early game?
