  • Toenails can become painful, especially if they are thick or lodged. Painful toenails are very common and sometimes removal is necessary. They can be removed to allow a new nail regrowth or, the root can be destroyed to stop any regrowth. This is an illustrated explanation of the procedure. Using phenol the wound usually takes around 3 weeks to settle but without is faster.

I just had my big toenail removed fully and the doctor said that the nail bed underneath looked very clean. Could my toenail actually grow back like a normal nail? All other toes are just fine. But this type of nail fungus may be a rare kind.

Hi! A new nail should regrow, but sometimes, it can be slightly thicker than before, depending on any trauma it has experienced. In cases of drastic trauma, like dropping a large weight on it, this can damage the nail root and cause a deformed nail regrowth. If it was removed because of a fungal infection, I often advise patients to use antifungal cream on the nail bed daily for a month (after any wound settled). Hope it's going well, and thanks for commenting!

@@thelondonpodiatrist Thank you so much! My podiatrist didn’t give me much information. He said that the nail bed looked very nice! I’m just terrified that the nail will grow back smaller. I’m a musician and have to move around a lot on stage for opera, and I’m so picky about my feet. 😆
