In fact, they also suggest that Sengoku believed they would win, but that they would sustain injury to do so. Notice that even then he still didn't join the fight and let the others handle it (which they did). If not for Luffy's plot protection, they would already have killed all the WB pirates in the bay through Akainu's attack.

I love this part. the epic music is of course one of the main reasons for that... But also... you see Whitebeards struggle... he know, that his health-condition isn't very well and he might die if he take on the 3 admirals... But at this point it doesn't matter. WB accepts that this is his last day. The only goal is to save Ace and that his crew can survive this. He tried all he could. He even tried to activate Conquerors Haki but it failed because of his heart... This whole battle is so tragic because WB knew (at least since Squardo stabbed him) that he would die... he was old, he was sick, he was way beyond his prime. But his sons ignored all this, they thought that all would be fine. I mean look at Marco or Jozu... they suffer heavy damages because they think they can save WB. But there is no saving, the whole goal was that Ace live and WB would die anyway. Too bad it all failed... But Luffy lives and with him everything WB and Ace dreamt off.
A lot of people wonder if Whitebeard awakened his fruit and I'm willing to argue that he did because of this simple scene right here, it's subtle but he's able to imbue his bisento WITH the power of his quakes. Although it's a bit underwhelming it follows the in universe rule of paramecia awakenings which is to apply or turn objects that the user makes contact with, with their devil fruit ability. Although it certainly wasn't expanded upon and he used it once it's enough to make me believe Whitebeard did indeed awaken his devil fruit, and honestly this does give the fruit more utility, it already has enough power since it's base form can literally *UPEND AN ENTIRE FUCKING ISLAND AS WELL AS THE OCEAN SURROUNDING IT* so the fact he was able to focus it more into a strike with his blade should make it more versitle and perhaps create different kinds of quakes depending on what he imbues with the gura gura no mi. I'm also not at all surprised Whitebeard wasn't that adept at his devil fruit ability, though he was decently smart with it, at his core Whitebeard is a haki street fighter, he mostly resorted to 1 on 1 combat and general swings and punches, this did end up biting him in the butt considering it seems devil fruit abilities don't take as much stamina and focus as haki does, and considering he was essentially rapidly depleting his health and stamina throughout this war this became a major issue. But this is where Luffy honestly begins to surpass Whitebeard, Luffy isn't just a haki fighter, he's stupid smart and good with his fruit. He's both talented in haki and very smart in fights, and knows how to apply his fruit in tandem with this knowledge.

Whitebeard is one of the most important characters in the anime. First off, he's a Yonko. That in itself is one of the most important facts of One Piece. Blackbeard's story is connected to Whitebeard. Ace's story is connected to Whitebeard. Most of the major characters have a story connection Whitebeard. You cut out Whitebeard, you might as well cut out Shanks, Blackbeard, Ace, all of the Whitebeard pirates, Jinbe, Fishman Island, most of the New World pirate captains etc etc etc etc.

I believe that Whitebeard just took in whoever was a lost pirate similar to Ace, so he wanted a family. He didn't really care much about them being strong or weak overall. Though it does make up his crew size being larger but it's not the strongest. But why need a crew if Whitebeard can single handily take on the whole government. Though for Big Mom case she probably has the most unique crew with special abilities and Kaido has a more physical strength oriented crew with manpower.

I'm also not at all surprised Whitebeard wasn't that adept at his devil fruit ability, though he was decently smart with it, at his core Whitebeard is a haki street fighter, he mostly resorted to 1 on 1 combat and general swings and punches, this did end up biting him in the butt considering it seems devil fruit abilities don't take as much stamina and focus as haki does, and considering he was essentially rapidly depleting his health and stamina throughout this war this became a major issue. But this is where Luffy honestly begins to surpass Whitebeard, Luffy isn't just a haki fighter, he's stupid smart and good with his fruit. He's both talented in haki and very smart in fights, and knows how to apply his fruit in tandem with this knowledge.

Whitebeard is one of the most important characters in the anime. First off, he's a Yonko. That in itself is one of the most important facts of One Piece. Blackbeard's story is connected to Whitebeard. Ace's story is connected to Whitebeard. Most of the major characters have a story connection Whitebeard. You cut out Whitebeard, you might as well cut out Shanks, Blackbeard, Ace, all of the Whitebeard pirates, Jinbe, Fishman Island, most of the New World pirate captains etc etc etc etc.

I believe that Whitebeard just took in whoever was a lost pirate similar to Ace, so he wanted a family. He didn't really care much about them being strong or weak overall. Though it does make up his crew size being larger but it's not the strongest. But why need a crew if Whitebeard can single handily take on the whole government. Though for Big Mom case she probably has the most unique crew with special abilities and Kaido has a more physical strength oriented crew with manpower.
